    you really need to know and understand on how to move thru the woods before trying this! also how did the park service bring all that in?

    This was way more overgrown than the last time I visited. Probably all the rain got the undergrowth really thick this year. I think some of this part of the BRT used to be a groomed ski trail, so maybe it was easier to carry in? Could have floated it down the Pigeon River? This part of the BRT is outside of the BWCA too, so they can use machines in this area I suppose too. The BRT used to extend all the way east to the Grand Portage, but the trailhead where I started is as far as it goes east now.

    I just did this route on June 21, 2024. We couldn't find the start of the portage that goes into Ada Lake. If I would have seen this video, we would have found it no problem. We took Ada Creek the whole way to Ada Lake which was winding but a lot of fun.

    I took that trail to the top of the hill last time I was here. I couldn't find it this time, but maybe I just missed it. There is way more undergrowth and the trees have grown quite a bit since I was here last.

    I did this trail nearly 30 years ago, and although I don't have many memories of it, I'm sure it didn't look anything like this back then. I do remember finishing it with such bad blisters on my feet that I had to drive home to NY in my bare feet. I had to cancel a trip to Isle Royale because of my feet, and it took me until 2011 before I finally got to do that much anticipated trip.

    A big fire burned most of the Powwow Trail in 2011. It's definitely changed. I haven't been to Isle Royale yet, but it's on my list.

    They said that an ariel view had shown there was some blow down near Clearwayer from the recent storm. Is there any visiable signs of it viewing the lake?

  • @bwcawild2230
    @bwcawild2230Ай бұрын

    Hello. There wasn't any signs of it that I saw while paddling the lake on June 24th. The only area of visible blowdown on Clearwater Lake is from the tornado back in October 2021 (think I have the year right). That area is visible starting at around the 52:00 mark in the video, especially on north side of lake (left from the canoe). You can see evidence of blowdown along the Gunflint Trail as you drive up, but it has all been cleared off the road.

    Could there be a better demonstration of the merits of a double-bladed paddle for a solo canoe? The wandering bow had me dizzy after the first several strokes. Ignore the preachers from the Church of the Holy Single Blade. You will enjoy the switch from sit-and-switch.😊 Been there, did that ten years ago and damn glad I did.

    There were a few trees down along the Gunflint Trail. Seemed like they were in bunches. I only drove up as far as Hungry Jack Lake Road. Think it was worse up near the north end of the trail. Portages were extra wet and muddy, but that's about all I saw. Not nearly as bad as Echo Trail area.

    Did you make it to the Stairway portage? I actually stopped at the Duncan lake entry point yesterday. There were like 60 cars there! Was gonna do Daniels lake, but went to Clearwater instead. Thinking they were maybe doing some trail clearing after the storm?

  • @quietsolo4570

    @bwcawild2230 There were 2 spots left to park. Yes, made it to Stairway. Thankfully the strong wind was direct tailwind then headwind rather than from west.

    the woods are really quiet. in Florida the woods are noisy. ...birds bugs or squirrels...even in Winter.

  • @bwcawild2230
    @bwcawild2230Ай бұрын

    Florida is in the sub-tropics, so I'm guessing there is a lot more species down there, especially birds, bugs and frogs. Nighttime can be very quiet in the woods of Minnesota. Winter is even quieter in the northwoods.
