I loved Ian Carmichael's portrayal of Peter Whimsey and I also loved Edward Petherbridge's portrayal. The Whimsey/Vane series are still watched by me - he plays such an unlikely romantic character! I am sorry that Dorothy Sayers didn't write more of this series.

Loved this interview! Definitely prefer Petherbridge’s Lord Peter Wimsey…Perfect casting, but I admit I was introduced to Lord Peter on PBS and not BBC. I listened to Ian Carmichael’s unabridged reading of the books and found it frustrating having just come over from Hugh Fraser’s readings of Hercule Poirot mysteries. (Wonderful!) Carmichael has a faster cadence and portrays Lord Peter with much affect…the mannerisms he used for him on TV. I don’t quite like his interpretation. I found myself replaying parts and sometimes the entire 10+ hours of the readings because I missed important plot lines the first time. I also found it disconcerting when his voicing of young men sounded as if they were old men…

Newman Noggs is my favorite Dickens character and your portrayal of him is perfection. You brought out his warmth, his shame at his foolish mistakes, and his fire when he was finally able to recover his dignity and his humanity. Thank you!

I fully agree! Edward Petherbridge was brilliant as Lord Peter! I have read all novels before I saw the movies - and Petherbridge's Lord Peter looked and behaved exactly like my head canon of the good lord. But Harriet Walter was very good, too. They had great chemistry, and it's a pity that they never made "Busman's Honeymoon". However, although I never liked the earlier Lord-Peter movies, I don't think that Ian Carmichael was bad as Lord Peter. I think that he could have been quite good if these movies would've been better. Their production values, the overall cast and the way they were directed was IMO vastly inferior. The earlier version of Lord Peter was a caricature without a lot of emotional debth and the movies were typical run-of-rhe-mill tv-shows. When I saw Ian Carmichael I could never forget that he was an actor doing his routine schtick. And while Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter started out as a bit of the caricature of a snobby lord, he developed more and more emotional debth in each subsequent novel. One of the best Lord-Peter novels without Harriet Vane is "The Nine Taylors" which is very atmospheric and brooding. But I could never get into the adaptation of that novel with Ian Carmichael. I think that an adaptation with Edward Petherbridge and the team which made the later movies, could have been great.

The joy of discovering Edward Petherbridge as himself has eased my frustration that Dorothy Sayers didn't write more and that the script of Gaudy Night occasionally did not rise to the level of her prose and your and Walters' inspired portrayal. You're not exactly like Peter, and I wouldn't do an actor the injustice of reducing you to a role you once played, but actors are often cast because they have a lot in common with a character, and you have the wit, eloquence, compassion and wry social commentary that fans of Peter enjoyed - except you're real. Thank you for sharing some of the wisdom, wit and joy of an elder looking back on a rich life. I wish you golden days, sunlight through birch leaves, and poetry until you take you last well-deserved bough - - there's a Freudian slip of a typo I'm just going to leave as is.
