    KOFAS accomplished everything we needed to do. It got the big companies talking about IP collaboration. It nearly saved Soul Calibur! But yeah, we're getting to the power creep point where you can win by holding Skill 2 indefinitely, and at least once or twice, I've stack-overflowed damage/score beyond the calculation limits of the operating system. It's really hitting a wall we can't deny.

    That said - the reason I got into KOFAS is because it was the best version of a fighting game adaptation to mobile, not necessarily because it was a gacha game. FOMO is a terrible motivator, and it really became too much of a timesink at times... but it still remains unmatched and the only thing I have to replace *my* core experience with now is Footsies. Which is mechanically terrific, but at some point, a bit too dry, you know?

    SF was in the darkages after SF3 3RD STRIKE. I agree with James Chen on this topic. Capcom couldn't do anything except releasing sh.tty SF version over and over. This is where I left the fighting game arcade scene after spending my youth playing since the early 90s. This is pre EVO before there is such thing as EVO, developing carpal tunnel being the best player among friends and siblings. HOLY SH.T, James! You even got the DC Justice League which created by Blizzard I had as a kid when my father bought the game. I was a beast at that game with all the characters on SUPER NES. Grew up playing SF, MK, KI and Tekken was such a nostalgic reminiscent of the old days.

    I actually just finished Spec Ops: The Line. When I looked up help, I found out it was taken off Steam & a lot of platforms. My first no nostalgia playthrough & boy oh boy that game was fantastic. I'm glad I randomly grabbed it on sale because that thing was intense. It's sad people have to pirate it now. For mobile though, I went down with the ship of Samurai Siege & Dawn of Titans. All the time sunk into that & it turned me off mobile for anything but a train ride.

    I remember those dark times. 2001-2009 there was no new Street Fighter feeling game for the longest time. Capcom vs SNK2 and then Street Fighter 4. Sure some could argue what about Capcom Fighting Jam or Street Fighter Anniversery Collection for Xbox with Online? CFJ was so bland and generic I only rented it once. The Online for Xbox SFAC was horrid to say the least.

    Customizable characters ruined Soul Calibur. 🤮 I like the game but it's no fun to play online when everyone I play against is using some jacked up ugly customized character. The game has no personality because it's just a fighting moveset that gets skinned with goofy items and random trinkets. It's not fun to fight an endless line of awful characters that look like rejected designs from a 3DO game.

    Silent Hill 2 is actually my favorite game ever. Every single time I go back to it, I pick up on at least one detail that I missed in every other playthrough. It's so cool that James loves it too. Edit: the "you see it too? For me it's always like this," line was great. The line that hits me the hardest is when a certain character says, "you made me happy," during the end credits. There just so much genuine emotion in that delivery.

    My favorite "bad" ps1 fighting game is Destrega. It's an arena fighter but it's from a top-down perspective. There's 3 attacks + jump, and your 3 attacks change depending on how close you are to the opponent. When far away everyone shoots magic stuff at each other and then up close is physical attacks. There's built in RPS because certain buttons beat other buttons, like a weapon triangle in fire emblem lmao. The cool thing is that you have a magic meter that refills over time and you can spend that meter to shoot really big spells and do button combos to change how the spell acts, it's neat! It's also really broken and easy to infinite people in the corner with close range attacks lmao oh well. The story mode is fully voice acted with some pretty funny performances though.

    I have mixed feeling about game preservation. Because the one who is doing the preservation doesn't have the right to do so. As far as i know, you are able to legally dump a game into ROM for your personal use. But the distribution of the ROMs is illegal. Even if games are preserved, we won't get any benefit from video game preservation. Then what is the purpose of the preservation? The game will still be inaccessible legally for people. Another thing is what is the scope of the preservation. Nowadays games have lots patches. Do we want to preserve just the latest version of a game or do we want to preserve all 100++ patch versions of a game that is 100++ GB in size? Another thing... I have a bad feeling of trusting people for preservation. I think it will become a business sooner or later. Being a business is not entirely bad thing but making profit from other people work doesn't sit well to me. Maybe the original person who does the preservation have good intention and everything is good when he is in power. But what happens after the original person retired? Its like what we have with Steam. Majority of people like steam now. But who know what happen after Gaben retired. I don't have much faith in video game preservation, unless someone can strike deals with video game companies and make it into a legal business.

    The trend lately has been to make offline versions of mobile gachas reaching EOL. Capcom did it with Mega Man. SNK should do that with KOFAS. Square should have done that with FFRK, and that Nier game they made. All the game dev has been done. It's free money. Why don't they do that?

  • @TonyTheTGR
    @TonyTheTGR5 сағат бұрын

    With KOFAS itself... yeah, it's doable to a point. But a *LARGE PART* of what makes KOFAS spectacular in particular is the IP collaboration range and this being the closest thing we have to an officially sanctioned "Smash Bros of Fighting Game IPs," and usually when these conversions happen, any trace of that IP collab stuff vanishes, even in-house collabs like DmC in MMXD. And KOFAS itself is also predicated a lot on the PvP elements - both simulated and live - which isn't going to happen effectively with an offline version. It wouldn't be unacceptable, but I don't think it would carry with it the same weight and validity that it has in its' current form.

    You can use the PC version with a controller, and you don't *have* to use Auto-Battle. There is a bit of resource grind/character building, but there's goofy fun shit you can do with that, too. I had SS/BS characters that would dump poison damage with any active skill, then reduce cooldowns by attacking poisoned enemies, all with crazy meter gain in the meantime. Active skill cooldown started at 4 seconds, and by the time you cycled through them they were reset, and then Supers were basically free, too! Good times.

    SF6 cosmetics have the potential to be really good though. I don't understand why they're so focused on Avatar cosmetics when I think most of the core player base don't really care about avatar cosmetics. Capcom is just drip feeding the stuff people actually want and are charging way too much for it. It just seems like a really noticeable blemish on what is otherwise a stellar game.

    Soul calibur is by far and away my fave fighting game. It really irks me how done dirty I feel it was. Like I think 6 is prob the best one if u don't nostalgia goggle 2 and 3 it did so much and was on a terrible compared to the money casually thrown at tekken. Like soul calibur if treated right could easily blow Tekken out of the water. Its story imo is far more interesting with all the spotlight not being thrown on one family. All the characters are beloved to a point that almost killed 5 cause ppl won't accept cookie cutter generic replacements. Like if they gave soul calibur a proper budget the single player content would be really REALLY good. But aside from that I always preferred soul calibur with its intuitive movement and its less bloated move set that still has plenty of legacy skill and imo I prefer the less juggly combos, quick and to the point most moves have there use especially with the addition of lethal hits in 6 and speaking of 6 with exception of RE which got nerfed into the dirt its gameplay is fantastic with great offense but unlike most games nowadays its defense is very strong but actually simple too such as guard impact being beaten by a break attack. Guard impact crazy strong tool to shut down pressure but come s at a risk. Air movement, all the wake up options and every semi clone character becoming 100 percent their own thing. Punishable CAs and I love the feeling of popping soul charge but I feel its not as annoying as Tekken heat where every round ur opponent gets insane pressure and rage AND RA. Like in soul calibur u choose if u want to soul charge or pop a CA not both EVERY round. Even early 6 was decent if balanced lol everyone said nightmare and ivy op as Skyll proceeds to win Evo with mitsurugi in a pretty nice mix of characters in top 8 I truly believe if soul calibur can get some decent work even just rerelease 6 with rollback ,touch up its graphics and let it have some spotlight it could thrive. Sorry bout wall but this is my favorite fighting game and its be a shame to kill it now after 6 was such a good call back to what it needs.

    Query, James: When exactly do you think the "Dark Ages" began? You mention SFA3, which came out in 1998, but then you mention KoFXI, which wasn't until 2005. While I would agree that the latter was definitely on the Dark Age, the former was not. And by extension, the PSX fighters, crappy as the majority of them were, weren't part of the Dark Ages. Indeed, I think you're misremembering history here. SFA3 on PSX was _highly_ praised, since it was by far the best home port of the Alpha games while also being the biggest and most feature-rich. There's a reason why that version alone sold a million copies while SFA1/SFA2 sold maybe 50-60% of that of they were lucky. Rather, it wa the hardcore crowd on alt.games.sf2 who didn't like the PSX port of SFA3, because it was very different to the arcade, in ways that only those hardcore players would care about but thr majority wouldn't give a shit about. I also don't think it's fair to mention _Capcom vs. SNK Pro_ , because I'm pretty sure no one in Japan played that either (for the record, my roomates and I got it for impoeet Dreamcast). That remains one of the most baffling releases of all time, because _Pro_ came out in June of 2001, while the _vastly_ superior CvS2 came out a mere 3 months later. Pretty sure even among alt.games.sf2 fare, the only ones who played and discussed _Pro_ at all were Majestros and myself. And of course, MvC2 came out in 2000 and was basically loved and played by _many_ . Arcades as a whole were dying, sure, but MvC2 kept things going a little longer, as did CvS2, to a lesser extent. So I would posit that the start of the Dark Ages wasn't with the early 2D-3D transition of the late 90s, which was more ties to the downturn of arcades generally (don't forget that the likes of _Tekken 3_ , _TTT_ , and _Soul Calibur, with the latter's incredible glow up on Dreamcast, came out in this time too), bit rather, with the final phase out of arcades post-CvS2. The decline might have started earlier, but there were sufficient big hits up until 2001 that the real dark age didn't kick in until much later (don't forget that MvC2 carried Evo for _years_ ; hell, MvC2 is the game that transitioned the B series into Evo!). So IMO, you're looking at late 2002, maybe early 2003, as when the Dark Age began. That was when the PS2 was really hitting its stride (ironic, because PS2 got good to great ports of all fighters at the time, albeit some were JPN-only like you said; we _did_ get _Guilty Gear: Accent Core_ in the west, which I played and loved after only playing the original GGXX because I was one of three people on the planet who did _not_ have a modded PS2, but by then the Dark Age had definitely settled in) and fighters had become kinda passe instead of big events, outside of maybe _Soul Calibur II_ . And of course, Capcom went dark during this time, only coming out with the soul-less (though otherwise not completely terrible) _Capcom Fighting Jam_ . GG started being a thing during this time, and Tekken continued to roll along (for the record, MK was and still is irrelevant, as far as the FGC was concerned; but nearly every MK game during this period still sold around 2 million copies aside from _Armaggedon_ ), and SNK was trying their hand with Atomiswave as their post-MVS system, but there was no single unifying game that drew people together and played like with MvC2 for years. Not until console SFIV dropped in early 2009 (since very few places outside JPN played the original arcade version which dropped in July 2008) did things pick back up. By that time we were in the PS3/X360 generation, a.k.a. when online was more mainstream and thus could start playing other more regularly. SFIV was big not just because it was the return of SF but also because it arguably kicked off playing online "seriously". These are the factors that lead to the FGC blowing up in 2009.

    You still on that denial, my man. Cammy gets results half the time in big competitions, because, again, said it like a year ago on this very channel, and I'll say it again: Cammy players are all frauds and she's easily the top 1 low effort/IQ character. She makes every fight into a random unwatchable 50/50 mess. Every Cammy players has basically the same level past Gold ranks. The only difference is, someone like Punk also knows the other characters and their options, and not just his own.

  • @UltraChenTV
    @UltraChenTV5 күн бұрын

    To be fair, I think Cammy is amazing this season. Currently she is in my top 5. However, I don’t think she is as brain dead as you say she is. She is very straightforward, but she requires VERY heavy Drive Gauge management (she’s super easy to accidentally burn out with) and she doesn’t have a lot of shenanigans and high damage starters that don’t require a big risk. However, having a Dive Kick will always make a character super strong provided the Dive Kick doesn’t suck donkey nuts. I’m not sure if you’ve actually used her in the game. Also, being able to kill everyone to get to Master doesn’t mean anything: Kimberly was one of the easiest characters to get to Master, but it all goes downhill from there because she genuinely sucks. Cammy doesn’t suck, but once you go up against people who can fight her, her “auto-pilot” 50/50 nonsense stops working. And a lot of characters have better 50/50s that lead to more damage for less resources than Cammy. I will say, however, that Cammy’s sLP is probably the best sLP in the game tied with Chun. Cammy’s sLP is kind of stupid. Hahaha. I think that might actually be one of the most broken things about her. Edited to add: also, Cammy’s results at big events have not been very stellar. She shows up a lot in top 8’s, but she very rarely wins. Compared to Ken who shows up a lot and actually wins. Haha. Cammy definitely is strong and she’ll get you far in tournaments, but being able to be consistent enough to win with her is actually very difficult. twitter.com/catcammy6/status/1812676017263112510?s=46&t=MDPxVSSyqz6WFoS5jSolyQ

    Dude.....as an avid fighting game player, yeah, those were indeed the Dark Ages for sure. I came up in the real golden era of the genre. I'm 47 yrs young and MANY of my free time and hrs were spent in the arcades just testing myself. Won a lot and lost as well but the thrill of competition and sharing the knowledge was and is invaluable. The friendships....the rivalries...the venturing to new and unfamiliar territories to seek out the stronger players there....man what a thrill. These young bucks will NEVER know that exhilarating feel of SF2/CE/Turbo HF/ST, KI 1 and 2, Tekken 1,2,3 and 5 DR, MK 1,2 and 3/Ultimate, XMen vs Street Fighter, CVS 1 and 2....I can go on and on. Love hearing the reminiscing of what was. I'd love to wax poetic with you one day and just talk about the Great Old Days. And yeah, I know all about SRK and Tekken Zaibatsu as well lol. 17:05 is almost like jinrai, yet people still complain.

  • @UltraChenTV
    @UltraChenTV5 күн бұрын

    Jinrai is interesting. If you have an OD DP, Jinrai loses a LOT of luster. Although Ken can try to keep making you burn meter by making you OD DP him. But characters without an OD DP have to hold Jinrai mixups like Kim. For Kim’s fHK, however, EVERYONE gets to blow it up without spending any Drive Gauge AND get decent combos on her if you’ve labbed out a good Juggle. Honestly, I’d take Jinrai over fHK any day of the week.

  • @SOSLO1324
    @SOSLO13245 күн бұрын

    @UltraChenTV Without OD DP you aren't forced to hold the mix-up, you can OS it. If Ken does: Medium jinrai - hold down back and jab with a 4-6 frame delay (it may be 4-8 frame it's been a while since I've labbed) it way you block the low kick and jab the overhead. Every other jinrai kick you can mash jab and either won't come out due to it being a true blockstring like heavy jinray and OD (if low follow up is selected) or blow up the overhead with the jab. With that being said, I agree that Jinrai is better.

  • @UltraChenTV
    @UltraChenTV3 күн бұрын

    True, I’ll have to practice that timing. But also, it’s not fast enough to punish it if you delay it too long and he does no follow up, which means he can try to PP you in return. Or even let you whiff and punish you as I’m sure there are ranges he can make it safe. But I should learn the late timing just to at least force that mixup. But again, no timing required for Kimberly. LOL! Just block and Jab. Like with Ken, she can do no jump follow-ups and PP the Jab, however, but it’s a HUGE risk for her because if she gets Thrown, she loses more damage that she can dish out after a PP. And that move has horrendous startup. :-(

    @UltraChenTV I just checked the window for medium jinrai, delay 4-9 frames. You are right that you can't punish if you delay it too much, but you can block the low, interrupt the overhead and heavy follow-up, that is guaranteed. The caveat is that if spaced from max range cr. Mk, the low follow-up can be delayed to the last follow-up frame to trap 4 and 5 frame delay, 6-9 you are safe from the other follow-ups. After your block your light kick can reach from most blockstrings ending in jinrai like jab jab or target combo mp to hp, only cr. Jab cr. Jab light kick into jinrai ends with the low being safe but you can interrupt with jab between cr. Jab to light kick Raw cr. Mk at max range and a little bit below, isn't punishable, so imo PP isn't that probable. It's a huge risk totally, but its at least a mindgame which may dissuade your opponent to press and continue with grab or to retreat safely.

    People say that, but it’s just not true. I have the examples of Guilty Gear (and also Tekken) having games released in Japan early, needing to import games to play, having no scenes out there, etc. Even though companies were making Fighting Games, it was so hard to play them with other people and no game was boosting the overall scene. Evo 2008 was the emptiest Evo I had ever seen outside of Smash Bros. Brawl and it was because people had lost interest in the genre.

    James you are a treasure trove of FGC and gaming history. I am near my 40s and everything you said about the dark ages in '09 is the truth. The perfect storm for the dark ages of fighting games, arcades shutting down, no online and JP receiving more exclusive content than the US in fighters. It was so bad in those dark ages I would practice motion inputs on my Game Boy Pocket (which i still have!) James if you ever write the book on anything FCG I would fly to get the book signed!
