    I'm autistic. Up until this month (I'M 41) I couldn't understand guitar method books, it's only been this year of getting a professional teacher that I can understand page 1. that means that I will be about to now incorporate it in my practice time!!. I'm going with Hal Leonard's method. but Mel Bay apparently moves slower.

    Thank you for commenting! I teach both Hal Leonard and Mel Bay. Mel Bay book 1 = Hal Leonard books 1 and 2. But, Hal Leonard is more fun. Mel Bay is more advanced the theory and application, but Hal Leonard stops along the way to teach you fun things. Either way, they are both excellent systems, and congratulations on this most important step in your guitar playing. I wish you a lifetime of joy!

    How do you feel about playing the sequence of four arpeggios in line 1 as barre chords? I'm not sure if that was the intention of the exercise or not. But t certainly makes a sequence of barre chords to practice. I started of playing it as open chords (except for the F). Then tried switching to barre chords. I'm not good enough at barre chords yet to achieve any kind of continuity around that segment but it is at least providing a focus to try and improve on it. Also the sequence of triplets after those barre chords seems to require some partial barres. By the way thanks for putting out these lessons - I'm working between your lessons and Nick Tolman's and pulling different things out of each. Relying on yours to get through this book after NT paused his series partway through. I feel like maybe some people may find the MB books kind of dull or dated but I find the pieces really make you think and there's a logic behind the curriculum. It's slow progress getting through the books but as with anything, you can sense the improvement in your playing over time.

  • @andrewwheelerguitar
    @andrewwheelerguitarАй бұрын

    Great question! I usually do play them as barre chords but I’m pretty confident that is not what MB intended, but who’s to say. I think they make a lot of sense as barre chords but I did not play the as such because he did not write the barre chord indicator along the top of the music he will do in later volumes

    @@andrewwheelerguitar Sounds like a lot of work (which is presumably why Nick Tolman is pausing). But I imagine there's a significant audience out there, as these book series seem to be among the most widely used method books. I have followed his lessons while going through Mel Bay 1&2 and Hal Leonard 1&2 and found them very valuable. However he's less than half way through book 2 of either of these series so there's certainly a gap to be filled there (and maybe it can be done better). I don't have much of a feeling for how many people proceed through the full series of Mel Bay. I would imagine it gets less as you go through the series (people start to diversify).

    @@angushenderson3560 thank you. I’m tempted to go back and actually properly teach book 2. The tricky part is, I believe I am prohibited from actually showing the book/page/sheet music on the screen. I can talk about it, explain and teach it, but a publishing company would most certainly take issue with dissemination of their valuable contents on-screen. However, folks at home ought to have the books anyway, so they can just read along. Thanks for your time and comments!

  • @angushenderson3560
    @angushenderson35602 ай бұрын

    @@andrewwheelerguitar Yes I don't think it's too much of an issue not to be able to show the lead sheets. If you're at that stage in the book (which you will have in front of you anyway) you can already follow along someone describing the segments as Nick Tolman does. For me the main thing is how he guides you through how to finger the more complex segments via descriptions and video. I mean there could be ways that it could be helpful but I'd imagine it would also be a lot of additional work to incorporate/splice in video of the music sheets. Anyway, good luck if you decide to create lesson videos - I'll keep an eye out for them.

    Great Info Andrew! I started playing gigs at 13 and stopped at around 22, now I'm 45 and am trying to get back to it. The reason I stopped was anxiety/stage fright, the last 2 years before quitting I had always some Imodium in my plectrum box, as my stomach got really bad the gig day. Then my eye twitched too, so... it wasn't fun at all, despite of the illusion to become a rock star when young. I've become a bedroom musician, and found your channel, cause I'm looking into the Mel Bay Guitar Method, to have some practice routine, even if the first 2 books, might be somewhat easy, there probably are some holes I need to fill up, as I'm self-taught (the real kind of self-taught... playing alone in my room with the radio and a cassette player, without books nor teachers... in the late '80s) :P

That is a really interesting story, and even though you experienced, / experience some hardship, you are going to continue your love for the guitar, no matter what, which is AMAZING!! Yes I remember imodium very well and I am thankful to say since I released so much of my bad prior music experiences, and let them go, I no longer suffer those things (I always used to keep 2 imodium pills in my wallet!!). The mel bay system is good if you are looking to understand how pitch, rhythm and dynamics works on the guitar neck, and, as you become more advanced (grades 3 and 4), I am working videos for those now - with a mentor or someone to explain why those chords/inversions are happening, will make a great difference. Sometimes mel bay is too boring just reading and reading those notes with no explanation. Thank you again!
