I've been passionate about photography since I was a kid, and I'm excited to share that with you on KZread.
Need help deciding what camera or lens you want to get? If you're looking for reviews of DSLRs, lenses, film SLRs, and other photography gear, I've got you covered.
I also share some photography techniques and tips.
As of now (8/16/2018) my KZread page is still under construction. I'll be adding a channel banner at some point.
6/2/2019 Update: I got sidetracked with other projects, but I’m planning to make some more videos in the next month or two.

Love the compactness and sharpness! Use it mostly for outdoor shooting, but for the price it's a great lens...thanks for this video...
Would you use this lens for an d7000 for sports photography
Its a shit lense, but it works. I think the best use for it, is to be able to see what other prime lense perspective would be.
Weight is not build quality.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome, Julio!
Between this 55-200 and 70-300 af-p vr... which one has the best image quality?
I’ve never used the Nikon 70-300mm AF-P, but I’d expect it to have better image quality in real world usage, since it autofocuses faster and has stronger vibration reduction. (It’s possible that Nikon has improved the optics, but pretty much every Nikon lens is sharp so I wouldn’t base my decision on that.) Another important reason why I’d choose that lens is that I prefer 70-300mm in a telephoto zoom lens. This 55-200mm is okY if you’re on a budget and you don’t mind that it’s DX, or you have a DX Nikon. But I’ve missed some shots with it due to its somewhat slow autofocus.
@@ThatOtherTom thanks!!
This was very helpful. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
The subjects look stretched with pics from this lens.
It might be an issue with me not knowing the best way to import them into KZread; there might be resolution issues. When I look at the images in my camera or on my computer, I don’t notice any stretching. If I upload more photography videos I’ll make a point of trying to sort out any resolution issues.
The manual focus ring on mine is stuck. Is it worth repairing?
It depends on the repair costs, but I’d expect it to be much cheaper to buy another used one. I think you’d spend a few hundred dollars repairing it, but if you have a local camera repair shop they should be able to give you a free estimate / quote.
Hey, thanks for the video, man. I'm helping out a friend to take his proposal photo for him and future fiancee and I need a lens that can take a get a great photo of them from 25-30 feet away. Would this be an ideal lens for that scenario? I currently have a 35mm prime and 18-55mm kit lens. I'm worried that those might be too short.
You’re welcome! If you’re sure that the lighting is bright (like if your friend is proposing in a park during the day,) this should work great. If you have a larger budget or if there won’t be bright sunlight, the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E is much better in lower lighting. You should be able to rent it cheaply from the BorrowLenses website. I would consider that the ideal Nikon DX lens for this. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!
Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome, thank you for watching!
Good morning sir, dis Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM is it good to youse in day studio ?
Good morning Jacob, yes it would work well for that.
@@ThatOtherTom Thanks alot
Shame, no video showing the menus or device in use!
Thanks for the feedback, I could’ve done better.
How is it so far? I'm planning on buying it next week for my Canon r6.
It’s a great lens for portraits. Hope you enjoy the lens!
So what’s the red little button in low right side?
On the lower right side, there’s a cover that can be removed. (It looks like a black button under a red mark, but it’s not a button, and it’s removable.) Inside is a connection port for the remote cable shutter, in case you want to take pictures without touching the camera, like for selfies or family pictures.
Will this lens fit Canon 6D mark ii?
Yes.
Is this lens suitable for canon 5d mark IV?
Yes, it will work on the 5D Mark IV.
@@ThatOtherTom thanks.
I have one of these.
Oh man, du schläfst ja gleich ein beim Sprechen!
There’s not too much I can do about my voice, I’m sorry you didn’t like the video.
I know this video is a few years old but this was super interesting for me. I'm buying an M50II. We had the old Canon Rebel G sitting around and I started wondering if this lens (mine is Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III) might actually work with an adapter or if it was just plain worthless. Most of us are on a tight budget after buying a camera so who cares if it's older! If it has any value to me at all, and in my case it's free, why not use it?! I know you can convert it to a Macro too. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching! I agree, old lenses can still take great photos, and when you’re on a budget (or just want to try something new,) older lenses are great. Canon made a bold move to switch to the electric EF mount, but it gave them tons of compatibility. With Nikon, old and new F-mount cameras and lenses usually aren’t fully compatible with each other, but *all* of the Canon EF stuff works together. Being able to use these old lenses is part of why I like Canon so much.
You look baked AF
Haha, I don’t get enough sleep, and I don’t feel very comfortable on camera but I can see why you might think that. Personally, I don’t smoke. Thanks for watching.
Amazing video. Sir, Recently I bought the Nikon FE, my only doubt is that in manual mode, do I have too match the both needles while composing particular subject? As I'm new to Film Photography just wanted to know how this in built light metre works
Thank you for the kind words. When you adjust the aperture (by twisting the aperture ring on your lens) the way that the needle moves will change, since you are changing how much light goes into the camera. (You need a wider aperture in low light and a narrower aperture in brighter situations.) If you are shooting in full manual mode then you want to change the shutter speed, which moves the green indicator, and have that be close to where the needle is. If you use automatic mode, then the camera’s (1980s) computer chip will select a good shutter speed for the aperture and the current light conditions. But you will always have to set the aperture yourself with this camera, so the “auto” mode is really what we would call aperture priority mode on a modern camera.
Have you tried to connect the GP-E2 to a PC? Apperantly, besides the track, you should be able to set settings and do a firmware upgrade (if ever available).
Thanks for the question, I haven’t tried connecting my GP-E2 to my PC. I’m more familiar with updates using SD cards, but it’s always nice to have the latest firmware so I may look into that if I have the time.
Connects fine to Mac -- you need the Canon GPS Log File Utility, available from the Canon support page for the GP-E2. Most recent firmware is version 2.02. I found the utility a little crashy, but it was written for a much old MacOs. Got there in the end, although had to do a couple of restarts
Thanks, very helpful

Would this work auto on a d5200 thanks
Yes
I have a nikon d3200 is it a compact 55-200mm VR lens? Thank you.
It’s a little bulky, but zoom lenses tend to be. I never had a problem with it being too long, but it’s not short like a 50mm lens or anything like that.
I have a Nikon d3300. I am interested in the nikon 18-140mm vr lens and the nikon 55-200mm vr lens. Which one do you think will be better? I have 50mm 1.8 for a portrait. I would like a portrait lens with a longer focal length, and I have the opportunity to buy these lenses inexpensively. They are the same price.
Either lens should work for portraits during bright conditions, but if it were me, I’d get the 18-140mm. It’s going to be more versatile for general purposes.
I have the 18-140 but I find it a little short, for similar money I prefer my 18-55 vr and 55-200 vr combination a little more effort changing lens but I found the 18-55 better over that focal length then what I was achieving with my 18-140, also the little extra reach offerd by the 55-200 gives me more flexibility, just my opinion what works for me, hope it helped you a little, regards Henry
Sharper grain Vrs Kodak Tri-X Blacks are not as dark.
I love this lens. I would put up against my other Nikon tele zooms (70-210mm D and 80-200mm G) any day and the VR is a great plus. The optics are outstanding for what you pay for. You said the most important thing, learn to work with what you have. An expensive, fast lens will not make you a better photographer.
So true, Dominic. The most important thing we can upgrade... is our skills! All the pro gear in the world can’t replace knowledge and experience.
People aren't gonna buy that lens in 2020 for sharpness. That lens would make a good "character" lens for an independent film.
Agreed. I just found this lens on an old camera body at value village. I got this with the the camera body for 15 bucks Canadian. It is a decent lens. Performed better than I expected
Thanks Tom, good advice for what I was looking for
You’re welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it to be helpful.
Nice video and great info. Thanks
Thanks, Chris! I’m glad people are still interested in the original X100.
I think none of the new cameras have gps (EOS R, R5, R6) its gone. :(
It seems like they want to make us buy an add-on, rather than giving us the feature for free. 😕
@@ThatOtherTom yep, and dealing with all that extra bulk and limited further expandability in process. True despair :D
@@MatijsBabris You can use the phone app to geo tag as well
Thanks for the video
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Sir is it fit for canon 3000d?
This lens is for crop sensor Nikon cameras, so unfortunately it will not fit on a Canon 3000D. Thanks for the question.
I think there might be an Adapter for That
I have one of those, it works fine.
How reliable is this indoors? I shoot 360 panoramas within school/university campuses and it would be great to help sort out where shots were taken
In my experience, it works well indoors. I think it would be a great way to automatically geotag what part of the college the photos were taken. That said, if you’re around very tall buildings in a place like Manhattan, or tall mountains, that might throw it off a bit. It would still give you the general area, but you wouldn’t have pinpoint accuracy.
Hey man, would have been nice to see more images/video with this lens. Just a suggestion.
Thank you, I’ll keep that in mind
Don't own it just yet but it is a must for me.

can i use gps connected via hotshoe from my godox x2t radiocontroller for flash?
Is it worth buying in 2020, I am a beginner.
It’s a decent choice if you want something very affordable that can also produce nice images. The more modern lenses are better, but more expensive, so a lot depends on your budget.
@@ThatOtherTom Thanks for the response :)
Yes, if you don't want to pump a crapload of money into a hobby, which are non-profit endeavors by nature, you will find that this lens is more than capable, especially for beginners. It performs very well in good lighting conditions, but in low light and for night time you'll need a tripod. If you break it, it's dirt cheap to replace. There's also the "newer" version, the VR II, which only has a locking button when retracted, similar to the 18-55 VR II kit lens. There's also the 55-300 version, but at least four times more expensive - if money is no object.
Check out my instagram_cyton photography i use it on nikon d3490
What is the situation with zoom creep - I need it for overhead shots so it is of outmost importance that it doesn't creep - do you have any experience with this subject please?
I just checked this out, and my copy of the lens does not creep at all when I’m pointing it straight down, or straight up. You shouldn’t have any problems with zoom creep on this lens. Sorry for the late reply!
@@ThatOtherTom Ah, that is great, thank you so much for the reply!
Can i use for 6D ?? Full frame camerw
Yes, it’s a full frame lens and you could use it with your Canon 6D.
WHY
Because its ef mount and those work on both apsc and ff

great review, thank you.
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
hey thanks for the vid, do you know about the focus distance from the object, i mean how close can you get?
You’re welcome, I’m glad you liked it! The lens can focus on subjects that are at least 1.25 feet (0.38 meters) away. Anything closer than that will always be out of focus / blurry.
@@ThatOtherTom thank you
Excellent review Tom. Thanks for sharing this video. Cheers!
