That's a pie for the crew! One of our guys ran over his leather helmet and smashed it. He threw it away, but we rescued it from the garbage and presented it to him on his retirement!

I've been there, although a marvelous of construction at that time....I thought it was so much bigger.....but I'll tell you we stated at an old Hotel ( well maintained) had a gallery of okd time photos of the men that built that damn.....those dudes were the Websters dictionary for a man's man.....rugged, filthy, old and young but great physical shape...wasn't an out of shape man in any of this pics, and there were a few hundred....and to know the tools they used by hand day after day.

I'm a career FF, I've seen helmets do this and get returned or found, I once did an inspection and saw a neighboring towns helmet on the persons wall and asked them about it, they said they drove over it and it was stuck in the wheel well (it did have the brim ground down flat) We took it and returned it, it was a leather helmet and the guy was on the hook for it. I've seen radios get lost and returned too but not the last nice Motorola APX one, someone has that in their man cave or sold it, we looked for it for about 1 mile of roadway up to a highway onramp.

I'm not trying to be critical here but why not just pull a u-ie and follow the fire truck to wherever it was going and then give it to them there?

That area is under a lot of construction as they are putting in a new bridge. By the time I could have done a proper “legal” U-turn and waited for the traffic light they would have been long gone. Since the firehouse was right around the corner, I thought that would be the best way to get it back to them.
