Its always been my understanding that acrylic and encaustic are incompatible. The result is a non-archival painting. Please explain how you know about acrylic with encaustic. Thx
Thanks for asking! I know from years of experience and working with multiple mediums that yes, you can paint encaustic over acrylic. The main thing is you want an absorbent surface for the encaustic to stick, and if you keep the encaustic thin or make sure that you mix in something absorbent such as marble dust (calcium carbonate) add collage with paper that has a tooth, etc. your encaustic won’t peel or fall off over time. Hope that helps!
thank you. It was nice video. very informative. do u have a video showing how to clean the lino sheet and the roller from the water based ink?
I don't have another video, but I usually use a couple baby wipes and then you can rinse with warm water and a scrubby sponge. If the linoleum is unmounted it can warp with the water, so dry it with paper towel or regular towel and then press under some books before using again.
I'm curious as to whether Prismacolour pencils might work as they're very waxy/oily... Loving your work, Dana - new sub here.
Thanks so much! I have not tried those but let me know if you try!!
Thank you! Is the weft has to be the same width as the pattern yarn?
You can make it a little thicker or thinner but not too much difference.
Hi! I got a heddle - the handheld one, looks kike yours, but without all the other parts, lol. Its an almost lost tradition in my culture. But I wonder - can i do geometric patterns, like yours, with it, too?
Lovely video and great explanation but the siren noises scared me lol I had to stop the video to see if it was you or me haha my heart skipped a beat
Oh my gosh I’m so sorry!
Helpful advice. Cheers
Very cool! What is the hot plate you were using to prewax collage items? Do you have sources for purchase of the plate and small craft iron?
Thank you! The craft iron came from Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, and you can get the anodized aluminum hot plate from R&F encaustic supplies!
You could also use a pancake griddle...Target, Walmart have them..everybody sells them..LOL I found mine at thrift stores, all working 100%. As for the iron, I use a small travel iron, a regular iron and a Veneer edge banding sealing iron, which you can get at any home improvement store or Amazon. They run between $86-$93. With a regular iron, I was told to find one with a flat base..no holes. I have both and they work the same. The holes are for steam and wax + steam =😮 LOL If you're undecided, maybe you know another artist who uses them...and can let you try. Have fun!!!
Hi there, What acid-free quality provides to printmaking ???
Hi there, paper has a tendency to yellow over time when exposed to air and light, especially if it contains acid. You will notice old newspapers that are brittle and discolored. Acid free paper doesn’t do that so it is archival and preserves the integrity of the artwork as it was first made. Cheers
Great. An interesting machine. I'll make my wife one too. There is a large one with pegs for working with planks. But for small jobs, this one will be more convenient. The children will be happy at the art school. Thank you. It would be great if you showed exactly what the machine looks like and what size it is. - Maxim - Russia = Saint Petersburg

Hi Maxim, it is called a rigid heddle narrow band loom
@@danaharrisseeger Спасибо. Посмотрел. В нашем регионе таких нет. Проще сделать своими руками. Ничего сложного.
I'm just wondering if a loom like this could be used for tablet weaving, rather than using a rigid heddle. I think it looks like it could, but not entirely sure.
Yes it can!!! Absolutely- you just put the warp through the tablets instead of the heddle
@@danaharrisseeger Thank you :)
Your beating tool looks like it was once part of a toy sword or dagger. I love seeing broken things being re-purposed. BRAVO!
That’s exactly what it was😂 from a childhood Nutcracker
Thanks. This time it’s too late I used a water based glue Tombow. I haven’t looked yet, but I’m sure it’s cloudy. I did my best to try not to get it on that I’m afraid to look but I will a lot of artist use the 77 and I’m gonna get it. I think it’s better than pixie spray and all that.
Hi again I am watching your video and you talk about toner transfer number one I don’t have a photocopier that does it number two why would I have to go to like Staples because I know Kinko’s doesn’t do it because I checked it out and I know the library doesn’t do it with their copier I’m really had a loss because you must have one of those expensive machines that does that I know it’s really expensive and like I said I’m totally at a loss I would love to try a transfer. I just forgot or how to do it and I don’t watch it anymore because I can’t do it so I figure out other ways but if you could help me out or give me some guidance or information, just for curiosity sake, I would appreciate it. Thanks again.🌻🌻🌻🌻
Thanks for watching! I have a really old photocopy machine, but laser prints with toner work. Sometimes the older machines work better because the toner releases more easily. You can experiment with different solvents too- sometimes wintergreen oil works or “Citrasolv” a citrus cleanser. Acetate also works but use a ventilated area
That’s soo cool I use citrasolv for other mixed media. I am still clueless.. what do u do rub it on the picture it won’t just slide off. I use old National Geographic with citrus and it makes great work. I’d be happy to show you a piece if you’d like.
Hi there I think you’re really great and I think you’re very helpful. I need to know what kind of glue you can use before you put on the wax meaning I want to put down acetate on top of some thing I’ve already glued down. Can I use the same glue? I don’t want it to be cloudy when the glue dries, I hope that makes sense. I think you’re great thanks please answer me. I know this is an old video but a lot of people are still watching you, so thank you
Thanks for watching! Before you put on the wax you can use a variety of glue from Elmer’s white glue to spray glue. For Acetate I would use spray mount like Super 77 so the acetate doesn’t wrinkle.
There your information is really cool. I actually looked up diamond core and I don’t see that kit that you have. I think it’s very cool. Do you mind telling me where you got it? Much appreciate it. Thanks.
Sure! Here is the site I get them from : diamondcoretools.com/products/3-piece-starter-set-p1-p2-p5?variant=32524932743308¤cy=USD&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhOTq7-2_hQMVZBetBh1cfwe1EAQYAiABEgI44fD_BwE
what do you use to get the screen filler out of screen when you're done printing? I had a horrible time trying to clear the screen. It would not come out. Any suggestions or tips to make it less painful to clean?
Yes! I know what you mean. Speedball sells a Screen Cleaner that is specifically for that stuff. I squirt it on, and let it sit for a minute to a minute and a half and then blast it off with a pressure hose. You can do that a couple times if it doesn't completely come off. Hope that helps! www.hobbylobby.com/Art-Supplies/Project-Supplies/Block-Printing/Speed-Clean-Screen-Cleaner/p/8548?srsltid=AfmBOorEkJ0v7Zyh_W92gzjIRDWFxxyNRJGJRtKIpdzB6OPJo9A6qloBgrg
Nice job, concise presentation and not without a bit of humor. (drum roll)
Thanks! You know about 1/3 of teaching is entertaining!
Thank you for the video. It’s great. The only issue is the music detracts from your narration, otherwise it’s a really helpful video.
Thanks! I heard that before about the music. I'll bear that in mind for future videos Cheers!
Is there a brand of paper you recommend?
For this book I used Rives BFK paper which comes in 30”x22” sheets
Yes! It looks like half of the video got cut off! Thanks for letting me know. I’ll post that segment next
This is a really interesting video. Will there be a part 2 showing the rest of the process?
OMG, this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! I was thinking about EL sheets maybe for lighting...
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for the best, clearest yet concise guise to transferring onto encaustic. I love your style of art as well so it’s really easy to watch. Very well produced
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words Barbara!
Can you share what the brand is of your loom? Great video, thanks
Yes! It's a BEKA from Mielkes Fiber Arts on Etsy.com
Thank you very much for those explanations. I discovered you and will watch your other videos which must be super interesting. Congratulations for your pedagogy. (Google translation because I am French)
Thank you so much!
Where can I purchase the narrow band loom
Hi Ellen, I got mine from Etsy! Just search “narrow band loom”
When you are 'picking up' the colored yarn, are you picking up ALL the colored yard, even the ones on the bottom? I kept tilting my head while watching your video thinking I could see in the weft to see exactly what you were picking up.. 😆
Yes, it's kind of hard to explain ha ha. The pattern is called a "pick" but you can "pick up" from below (the two patterned threads that are together to form a thicker or double thread. These are the ones that are below the Shed) or you can "push" down the two pattern threads that are showing above the Shed (the space created when you raise or lower the heddle). Does that make sense? Each "pattern thread" is really two that are strung together. If you haven't already, watch my "Warping the Loom" video which is Part 2: kzread.info/dash/bejne/haOAt5p-l5C-n9I.html
If I paint on encaustic with oil paints, can I do a layer of encaustic on top of the paint? At what point do I fuse the paint - Let it dry first? Then add wax on top?
Yes you can! You can fuse right after you paint. You don't need to let it "dry" but just know that if you fuse heavily, the paint will bleed into the background layer. So I fuse lightly and let it cool and fuse lightly again. You can test to see if it will smear before you add encaustic on top by running your finger or a tissue lightly over the paint. If it comes off, it's not ready for an encaustic layer. Hope that helps!
How much would you sell this on the market? I’m thinking of selling it as an art comic (8pages) 2in x 2in. Thinking of it 5$ per book but is that low?
Hi Faith, great question! Sale price depends on how much time you spend, how much it's worth to you, and how much you think people will purchase it for. 2x2" is pretty small. If you are making tons then selling them for a lesser price makes sense if you can sell a LOT of them. If they each take you an hour, then you are making $5 per hour (minus your materials cost). That's just a reference point. Hope that helps!
I'm taking an intaglio class right now and your tutorials have been so helpful! Thank you! :)
Thank you so much!!! I'm glad they were helpful. Please let me know if there's any other videos you would like to see.
wish this received more recognition. beautiful. ps.. no voice over this time? :(
Thank you for the great video. Where did you get your loom. What is the name of it. Great work.
Thank you! I got it on Etsy.com: www.etsy.com/listing/724402270/4-rigid-heddle-loom-to-weave-bands-and?click_key=12e0abeb5b962479d19a236fe868ec291e158f4d%3A724402270&click_sum=464637f4&ref=shop_home_active_119&frs=1&crt=1&sts=1
This, and your 3 weaving tutorials, are brilliant! I've dabbled in tablet weaving and get in a mess with the pattern and also the constant twisting, but this looks so much more intuitive and easier for someone like me who gets easily lost and fuddled. I will be blowing the dust off my inkle loom and treating myself to a rigid heddle 🥰
Wonderful! I’m so glad they are helpful❤
Thanks. You are the best! Congratulations
Thanks for watching!❤
Do you use any special type of ink specifically for plexiglass?
Sometimes! Usually I use water based acrylic screen printing ink. I try not to smear it while it's still wet. After it dries (whether you rough up the surface with sand paper first or just leave it shiny) it can also be scratched off, so I usually place the images on the back side of my final presentation. You can apply a clear coat of acrylic sealer after it has dried to the whole thing, but sometimes it can leave a darker tone. I have also used oil based ink, and you can get vinyl ink for non-porous surfaces, but these use solvents to clean off the screen and I don't like doing that, so I stay away from them.
This is extremely helpful. 🙏🏽
Thanks I'm glad it helped!
Thanks I'm glad it helped!
Thank you Dana for responding - Skillshare is AWESOME!! I didn’t realize you were teaching there so will go follow you there too, lol! Can’t wait for the new class 🎉
Hi Dana! Love all your videos on encaustic and printmaking (subbed to your channel & newsletter 😊) I know you’ve had in-person classes for screen printing on encaustic but wondered if you have a video or online class for this particular printmaking technique? I do both and would love to learn how to combine them! Thank you for being so generous with sharing your knowledge & talent😊
Thank you so much! I am posting some new classes on Skillshare soon, and this is definitely one of them! I love these two methods too obviously and it's pretty simple to combine them. Stay tuned, I'll send an email when those go live! Happy painting and printing!
Sorry, I responded via my other Channel! It's still me though!
Hello from Latvia! ☺ Thank you for the video! I was confused about what the dots meant that i kept seeing in the patterns online, this was very helpful. 👍
Sveiki! I’m so glad I could clarify that for you! Happy weaving!
is this the 4 inch loom width that you are demonstrating on? How long can your band be reasonably with this loom?
This is the 4” version. I do a warp facing band so it ends up being more like 1” wide. You can make it as long as you want! Just make sure it’s all flat when you wind it around the wood support
Awesome video! Very helpful ❤
How many people have 30” long paper?
Well, in the printmaking world the paper comes 22x30” long!
Thank you that was really useful!
Glad to help!
thanks for a some great tutorials! Now I will be able to design my own bands...I do have one question though...I am weaving on an inkle loom rather than a heddle...on the threading draft, are the holes considered heddle threads, and the slots unheddled? That will make it clearer to me when it comes time to thread my loom. thanks in advance for your reply
Yes! That's exactly right- "heddled" are the ones that remain "stationary"
Hi Dana! I recently took a workshop with Gabriella Sanchez on this exact topic. While it wasn't a complete success, I liked that the finished piece looked so different on the front and the back. We didn't have time to work with any LED lights, so I'd really like to learn more about mounting the finished piece with light behind it, and/or building light boxes. Thanks for always showing us your experiments!
Of course! Thanks for watching! I'm new to this as well, but it seemed to work great with the thicker plexiglas, and I was just going to get a shadow box or canvas frame and use stapes or glazing points to set the plexiglas painting into the front, then attach some sticky back LED lights to the inside of the frame and see how that worked.
Does the led rope light have a battery? Totally fascinating.
Beautiful work thanks, lots of ideas. I have only tried the iron so far. Looking forward to try your tech. Question though, after I polish it, love it but then it gets dull again, how can I make it look like when it is polished and stay that way if it is possible I would really love this look. thanks
Encaustic will "off gas" and cure for about a year, so it will keep "fogging" up during that time. you just keep polishing and eventually it will stop fogging on you!
How to dry faster ink
If you want your ink to dry faster, you can add a dryer. If it's oil based, then adding an alkyd medium will help it dry faster. There are others but they are kind of toxic. For acrylic based, putting on some more air - like hanging up with a fan on them, is key.
