ASW27B Soaring

ASW27B Soaring

Join me as I fly my sailplane at various locations: in contests, and locally around Jacksonville, Florida. From time to time I may provide training videos regarding programming flight instruments. My current sailplane is an ASW27B; previously I flew a Glasflügel Mosquito. I may sprinkle in a few personal videos too.

    I noticed that the water outlets in the wings are closed with tape. Do you never fly with water? You're missing out, my friend. The 27 loves higher wing loading.

    Very observant. I'm planning to fly with some water this winter, but for now I've avoided it since I fly mostly in flatland areas along the Atlantic coast. Thermal conditions are relatively weak and the marine air incursion usually bites hard. I'll throw in some water one of these days. I taped up the water drain just so I don't damage the flap.

    Can you explain the humming in the background? does it measure climb and descent rate?

  • @ASW27BSoaring
    @ASW27BSoaring9 ай бұрын

    Yes. It's an "audio vario", so in rising air, the audio vario will announce a "positive" sound, and vice versa for sinking air. If I'm flying at an airspeed that is "correct/more efficient" for the conditions (McCready), it'll announce a "speed to fly" sound. What I use in my ASW27 is an LXNav Hawk. It's far superior than the old SN10B variometer I used to have in my sailplane. You also may have heard a "sonar" sound at one point ... and this is my LK8000 (LX8000) tactical flight computer warning me that I was about to enter a specific type of airspace. In this case, it was a "DZ" (i.e. drop zone) used for sky diving enthusiasts. They were not operating at the time, so I ignored the warning and headed toward a booming thermal. At the beginning of the video you also heard a background "hum" and this was my Hawk. I may have to look into a configuration change to eliminate the humming sound - since it shouldn't be making any sounds. Most likely the hum is due to a speed to fly setting that needs to be adjusted. Update: I checked with Cumulus Soaring (Paul Remde) and his feedback is this: "The vario sound can’t be turned-off. That is the way LXNAV and many European varios work. It is normal. I just turn down the vario when on the ground. To determine if you’re hearing speed-to-fly tones, just look at the icons in the center of the vario’s main numeric flying screen. If you’re in climb mode, the vario shows an arrow with a circular shape. When in cruise mode the same spot shows an arrow that is going down and to the right. You would hear different sounds depending on whether you’re in climb mode or cruise mode. You can configure how the vario changes from cruise mode to climb mode."

    There is no Club class at the Seniors. 15, 18, and 20 meter ships all fly as ONE class ... but this is accomplished only by handicapping everyone. We all fly dry as well.

    Milan has one himself with "KuhuSoaring.nz" (kahusoaring.nz/) on the side, but I flew with a "colleague" Gavin, (CFIG) who works in conjunction with Milan. I'm assuming the money I paid Milan for the flight will be split with Gavin. Milan, Gavin and one other pilot all were flying their Duo's that afternoon, so it was a good time with all trhee of us trying to get past any rotor and find wave. None of us made it though. The tow plane was a Dynanic WT9 Turbo, I believe, and it did its job, but it took a while to climb out. You can see from the video. On a high desity altifude day, they might have some slow climb out issues, except their runway was plenty long with few obstacles. Not sure if they have other tow planes available. I'm used to being pulled up by a Pawnee, so this climb out was slow for me. Tow pilot was from Finland. Milan is from Hungary. Gavin the CFIG with me was from England.

    What's the difference between AAT and turn area task ?

  • @ASW27BSoaring
    @ASW27BSoaring2 жыл бұрын

    (TAT): Called a "Turn Area Task". At US contests the majority of tasks are Turn Area Tasks. TATs consist of (!) a Start Cylinder (with a maximum start altitude and a radius of 5 statute miles), (2) any number of given turn cylinders (which specifically defined radii for each one), and (3) a finish cylinder (with a minimum finish altitude and a radius of usually 2 statute miles). TATs also always have a pre-defined minimum task time. The winner is the pilot who achieves the fastest average speed around the task. (AAT): Assigned Area Task (aka Racing Task). This is the most straightforward task type because there is a set course with a number of pre-defined turnpoints. Whomever flies around the fastest wins the race. Contests Start and Finish are cylinders just like for TATs. Turnpoints are cylinders with a radius of only 1 statute mile, and pilots will get credit for the actual distance that they fly into a turn cylinder.

    Great vid, Ron. I'm curious about the numbered tabs on the chart. Potential land out locations?

  • @ASW27BSoaring
    @ASW27BSoaring2 жыл бұрын

    Those numbers are the waypoints for the contest. Some are actual airports, and some are some sort of landmark - with no landable site associated with them. I draw the turnpoint dimensions on my sectional and then add in a route line to help keep me going the right direction. Once I found myself going the WRONG way! Then I also "calculate" the time I want to be within that waypoint cylinder based on an average speed of 60 mph. It helps me keep on the pace I need to return back to the finish cylinder within the allotted minimum time needed to cover the distance.

  • @ASW27BSoaring

    Hi Jeff. We land on the grass at Herlong. There is the shorter "first grass" where I landed and "second grass" just past the mid-field taxiway. I opted to land on the first patch since there was a towplane and a couple of club gliders scattered around my glide path for "second grass". We're fortunate that Herlong has PLENTY of ground for us to use as options. Hope to see you in a few weeks up in Minnesota! RT

    What do you like and dis like about the mosquito? Things to look for ? Heard that the wheel brake position is not so great?

  • @ASW27BSoaring
    @ASW27BSoaring3 жыл бұрын

    The 303 is a great flying sailplane. I found it to be a nice intermediary between your normal "club" ships and higher performing ships like my ASW-27. Thje highest performing sailplane I flew before buying the Mosquito was a B-4. The Mosquito really prepared me well to handle the ASW-27, which flys at 48:1. The Mosquito was about 40:1. The Mosquito never scared me when I was flying it ... not sure why this was, but that's what I encountered. Regarding brakes: I had heel brakes installed, so it was rather effective, but not the best. I never relied on the brakes to slow me down quickly, but instead ALWAYS tried to manage my energy at landing. The trailing edge dive brakes are incredibly effective, so you could land the 303 in tight spots. I landed out many times at other airports, pastures, dirt fields, turf farms, etc. The reason I sold the Mossi because I was a bit too heavy for it and my CG was always too far forward for my needs. The Mosquito is a great Sports class and Club class machine, and I flew all my contests in it, but I wanted to "step it up" and fly a higher-performing machine. I highly recommend the Mosquito for someone who wants a solid higher performed sailplane for XC flights.
