Cool. Yeah, I mean, one time I tunned my guitar to a lute tunning, you just need to change one tring from the regular tunning. It changes the shape of some chords, it''s good to force your brain to think different I guess.

I've always disliked that B string (changes to 3rd) And except for slide, never had any idea you had the right to retune. Picked up a cello recently. Tuned in 5ths! Boy did THAT get me thinking. Was considering retuning to fourths until I started reading. Amazing stuff.

This fourth tuning makes more sense than standard tuning but how would that change the shape of the chords??

Consider D major triads: Here are two not affected: 554xxx x12 12 11 xx In standard tuning you could have: xx777x but this would become xx776x So it’s the same shape as the first two. Or in standard tuning: xxx232 which would become xxx221. All root inversion triads would have the same shape regardless of what strings they are played on.

Same as others here, started playing a bass, and I just couldn't wrap my hand around standard tuning. I also play left-handed upside down, which made certain 6-string chords even harder. Nowadays i just play baritone uke and tenor guitar in P4 tuning. And I totally agree with Stanley Jordan about the beauty of the symmetry.

I play D standard. I tried P4 tuning whole step down then I went straight back to regular D tuning. Its great for scales and triads but playing 5 note chords are a bit cumbersome. The open medleys are based around the key of F in P4 tuning highest tuned string determines the relative key. Standard is based in E so changing the the two treble notes a half step higher makes it F.

I just discovered this tuning on my own as well. I love octaves. I was trying to get the same fingering for octaves on all strings...after I did it ...I Googled it...come to find out...it's perfect 4th tuning. Mind blown 🤯 Should have been doing this the last 20 years. And who tf is this guy and why have I never heard of this monster until right now?

Why is P4 musically better than Standard tuning? Music, like storytelling, is a matter of interpretation. We learn language rules and many words to tell stories in our own way, but don't always quote paragraphs written by others. So I think it was a great mistake by many to teach the guitar by copying "hand positions" of famed players in order to learn songs, instead of interpreting their sound. That is why more intuitive music-making tunings were abandoned for the sake of seemingly "easy copycatting." The guitar playing became harder and more confusing than necessary. If the music was really the goal of tuition, then we'd have at least 30-40% of musicians playing in P4, instead of 99% playing in Standard.

"keep" - yeah, well, when you already know how to play, its not useful to try and switch. its got nothing to do with the tapping. it is also difficult to learn from others with p4. as it so happens, I just started this at a very late age and decided its better for me as things are quicker to learn, and the internet cannot teach me much with tapping anyway.

I am a natural bass guitarist and I tune my standard guitars to fourths when I play standard guitar. Much easier to comprehend. As the purpose of standard tuning is to enable easier 6-note chords, I can’t think of many genres of music that require six-note chords anyway. Maybe folks music, playing cafes with an acoustic... Certainly not most rock, funk, jazz, or reggae.
