For 1942, the squid effects were pretty great.

Ante-bellum American in the Carolinas. All the blacks there are slaves. The unlikely Lincoln was 28yrs old in 1840, studying law or about to, running a failing store in New Salem and America was full of promise except for the stain of slavery and the aristocratic pompous fools that were Southern Democrats.

I'll add my thanks for posting this film- a great movie and yes- a rare one where Wayne plays the villain! (I can't think of another.) I was interested to see that Robert Preston played Dan Cutler- who went on to be the con artist in The Music Man, amongst many other titles. And Milburn Stone played LT Farragut- he went on to play Doc on the TV version of Gunsmoke, two decades later.

I like Cecil B. De Mille movies, there's just something about them that I just can't quite put my finger on, but I like them, I've never seen this one before, that's for sure. THE SARGE

One of the most fun things about this film, other than a Strong Female Character who's still feminine, is that it's an interesting piece of actual history long forgotten unless you live in Florida. The Florida coast is an absolute ships' graveyard.

This was filmed 7 years after the great hurricane in the Florida Keys that killed 400 veterans who were building the railroad in Islamorada and probably over a thousand in the middle keys. It ripped the train off its tracks and Drug it out to sea.

Great movie. Over the years only saw bits and pieces then finally saw it all. A real classic film based on real people and real sailing ships. The giant squid was questionable until I saw Pirates of the Caribbean. I know that part is true.
