The level of classical guitar playing of this particular period surpassed any of today’s right hand technique crossed over from folk rock finger picking style.

I think this student plays like he never heard himself on record before. How you think the music sound vs how the music actually sound are very different, I didn't realise it until I went into my first recording session in the early 2000s. Once you develop the habit of recording yourself and playback you can fix so many things musically even technically. This is the one tool the older generation didn't have that could've helped tremondously.

Oh, how wonderful! I used to perform this, and I've heard it many times, but I've never seen this Presti video. She really makes it a piece of music rather than just a demonstration or feat of technical prowess.

It is amazing to imagine an era when people would actually stop and respect/listen a rendition like this. since a couple of decades one is usually ridicularized for doing so. Bream and his generation were lucky!

Fun fact: Jorge Cardoso is an avid football fan. It almost defies belief that he composed this piece on the very day of the world cup final opposing Argentina to the Netherlands. Argentina's 3-0 victory is but a dusty line in encyclopaedias now, but the milonga in D minor has stood the test of time and will remain with us for… something very close to ever.

I was one year old when this was filmed. I am 46 now. I only just learned of Julian Bream this past year and have been listening to more and more of his works as time goes by. What a champion of classical music, truly an inspiration. It makes me sad to think that this kind of music is so steadily fading away, as all things do; underappreciated by our rapidly diminishing culture as a whole in this world. But poor taste is not an ailment a person is born with, rather a habit that can and must be broken as one grows and learns to behold beauty in it's more honest forms.

Magnificent. Julian and the students all on top form. Very enjoyable. Try as I might, I can’t come to terms with Bach on the guitar. Even in expert hands, the classical guitar seems to have the wrong tonality for this period of music, it brings in innumerable intonation issues and doesn’t evoke the spirit of the composer.

This is just a joy to watch, and has made me want to learn these pieces again after first playing them about 30 years ago. Bream's passion for the beuty and musicality of the music is genuinely inspiring.

In Guitar magazine (UK) c. late ‘77, there was an extended article about this series. Bream held forth on his approach to the classes and waxed lyrical about various related topics. I never thought I’d be able to view it at my leisure, all these years later. An excellent series. Nothing on TV like this now..

It's not sexist to hold a woman to the same standard we hold men. If a male player performed this he wouldn't be winning any competitions
