I am 63yrs old, know little or nothing about cars, but love watching Phil educate us all, My Dad thought me to check oil, change a tyre etc. But so much is computerised now, sometimes we need to trick the computer ?

I like that car. It has plenty of room to cart things back and forth and has a hitch to pull a trailer.

Oh Phil! I envy your knowledge, your skills, your passion, and your unbridled enthusiasm for these vehicles that "just need a little bit." 😄My car is old enough to drink anywhere, and it is well complex enough for me. My Dad taught us the "one more thing to go wrong" principle of car construction. 😉

Like watching you fix things. At least an estate so more practical. Wouldn't of bought a diesel BMW. Looks a nice car though. Old Volvo or Toyota Hybrid for me. Had 2 diesels. A new Corolla diesel hatch. 1.4D4D. in 2007 when lived in Normandy for 2.5 years. LHD, bought for 21,000 euros. Sold back to dealer 2.5 years later with 44,000km for 8k euros! No issues, just servicing. Decades later in 2019, a 2006 Lexus IS 220D for £1500. My worst car. HG went 18 months later at 187,000 miles. Liked the comfort, build quality and colour, safety inc knee airbag but engine and gearbox a right dog. Mismatched gearing and massive turbo lag. Scrapped for £350.

Since you've run the air con cleaner, make sure you change your cabin filter as well. They can get gross and impact the air flow capacity whilst holding odors.

To avoid this in the future, as it will happen again, put heat barrier tape on the underside. Plastics should not be allowed in internal combustion engines. They all fail due to heat; intake plenums, coolant piping, timing covers, etc. Items, such as the expansion tank, which are in close proximity to high heat should be made of more heat resistant material.

Not the cheapest mate, bought my 06 4.2 MQP few months back for 4k... Loads of errors on dash, put a brand new battery on it and everything went and never came back. Clutch wear is at 20%, car is MINT. So you're in second place right now lol...

I think you are wasting your money buying 8 coils,if you fitted 2 new coils and you still have the same misfire logged then why do you think buying 8 will change it? I had running issue on a BMW once and scanned for faults and it showed same as yours all cylinders had misfires ,thought strange they all went bad at same time, did a close inspection and found a air leak on a hose, fixed it and all misfires disappeared

The 1 series is your wife's? I guess she owens it? Let her have it. If it has the M47 engine you won't kill it (chain belt on the front side). The only lower quality item is the rear axle differential gearbox, if you punish it, it will be gone after 250 - 300.000 km.

No it was previously hers when she lived in France before we separated. I had it after she left as a cheap to run daily but I have another car to use as that now (details coming) It’s the N47 so timing chain on rear but I’ve already done that along with huge amounts of other stuff so it’s a sorted car mechanically just a little rough around the edges bodywork wise

  • @lindasteller

Lots of projects, but I vote for the Maserati as the priority. With all your planned trips this summer, you won't have much time to use the van anyway. My grandmother was born in Turji Remeti, in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, now part of the Ukraine. I'd love to visit there someday.

Hi my 2009 Jaguar FX with 4.2 L engine is having the same problem. It's not the coil packs for me. A jaguar mechanic told me yesterday to replace the fuel rail pressure sensor. He said that can cause the misfires. He also said low fuel pump pressure can cause misfires. I have ordered a fuel rail pressure sensor. Will install when it arrives. After that, if that does not fix the problem. I will replace the fuel pump. The mechanic said those are the two main reasons for misfires when multiple cylinders are involved. I don't know if this would help you but could be something worth looking into. Like you, I do all of my own work I enjoy it.

We see you renovating and looking after your beautiful Château and then all the mechanics that are required to fix everything which you seem to be able to do without much of a problem. I’m very impressed, thank you for your videos and have a good weekend, cheers 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🇦🇺

Is it possible it is the catalytic converters (when they get hot) causing all 8 to misfire? Too much back pressure from gummed up catalytic converters.... 🤔 Throw a straight pipe on one bank and test it then (not to mention it will sound much meaner). I had the same issue with my 1990 Fer 348 TS. My solution was to permanently install straight pipes, removing the cats. Fer cats don't really last long (no idea why). Although you really can not just permanently throw some straight pipes on, being in the EU, you can put some temporary ones on to see if the problems resolve themselves. You know how to do metal work, so you should be able to fashion something for testing.

A good update on everything. My first car to have AC was a new corolla D4D In France in 2007. Sold and moved to County Kerry and bought a 1989 Volvo 240 auto estate. No AC, expensive option and so rare to find on a UK spec 240. Owned for 10 years, 8 as only car/daily driver. Then bought a 1996 Volvo 940 auto estate in 2016. No working AC when bought. Finally last summer fixed it with new condenser, used AC compressor and better used AC pipes. Nice to have. Also have a 2015 Toyota Auris Hybrid estate Icon +. Cheap to run, an A to B car. Volvo 940 is my favourite to drive though and reliable at 210,000 miles.
