Wildlife photography by Mike Lane FRPS
I always say that I have four interests in life. Wildlife, photography, travel and computers. In today's digital age they all combine very well into one interest.
In an ideal world I would spend all my time travelling and photographing wildlife and I managed to do this for about 25 years or so. I did not get rich, but managed to scrape a living taking and selling images of wildlife. Today economics force me to spend more time at home. My income now comes from online retailing of camera equipment rather than selling pictures. My bank account is richer, but I am time poorer.
However, I still travel as much as possible and most days get to spend some hours in the countryside planning the next photograph.

Very nice location and photography.
I can't help noticing Mike, your still images look severely under saturated compared to your video footage. But very nice anyway 👍
Thanks, Mike. Entertaining and informative as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant trip and capture as always. Thank you for sharing Mike. May I ask what is that large camera plate you are using in the hide on the bench?
There was more than one, but they all did the same. The only one I can find on the web is this www.mdjfotografieshop.nl/c-6508323/mdj-ground-pod-pan-voor-bijvoorbeeld-op-het-strand/
Wow Seriously excellent action shots Mike ❤👌
Thank you
Great video clip Mike. So many species at one time 😊. Wish I could get this in UK so I can shoot video on my new G9 m2 - excellent camera for video and good value for money. There are some interesting settings on this camera that are not present on my OM-1s. Mainly using OM-1 now for photos and the G9 m2 for video. Keep on posting 👌👍😊
Awesome work Mike.
Thanks 👍
Great video and pictures Mike only you can miss what you went for and make a more interesting video anyway 👍📷
Thanks 👍
Lots of species I have only read about as a teenager growing up in Lancashire. I used to collect birds eggs when I was younger and one of my prized possessions was that of a Redstart. It wasn't until years later that I learned of the distance these birds travelled to breed in the UK. I gave my egg collection to a friend before I emigrated to Australia.
Common practice in those days.
Photos like this are why I love my OM1II.
Thanks.
Some awesome shots Mike. I was interested in your comment re number of birds in the UK - Last year on my feeders for example I could easily get up to 20 gold finches, this year lucky to get 5. Bullfinches and nut hatches came last year this year so far none. There is a definite change.
Its a huge decline and worrying
such a variety of birds we would love to see in the UK.
They are here, but in lower numbers.
Thanks, Mike, for sharing your pictures and video from that great location.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant video and photos as usual Mike thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent video Mike. The ProCap pictures are brilliant. When is Frederic going to get an OM1mkII so he can use ProCap ?
He is saving for the Sony A1 mk2, which will not even require a photographer to be present!
Very beautiful photos and video, Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very beautiful photo
@@MikeLaneFRPS Was this recently? I only ask because of the snow?
In May 2024
Loved the procapture shots Mike 😊
Thanks
always inspiring watching your videos Mike!
Glad you like them!
Congratulations. Yours pictures and sounds are perfects !
Thanks
Thank you for the beauty of nature. So pure and genuine. 😊
Mike, At 8:40 when you bring the bird back into the frame with the Mk2, the image is out of focus for a bit. It doesn't appear to be focusing as fast as the Mk1. Recheck this area in your video and you'll see that when the focus box is over the head there is a slight delay before the head snaps into focus on the Mk2. I didn't see this in the Mk1, so I'm not convinced that the Mk2 is faster at acquiring focus than with the Mk1. While the Mk2 might hold onto the subject while the bird is in flight, I'm not seeing faster focus acquisition from the sample you posted. Nevertheless, I appreciate you making the time to post your findings. You are more thorough than most with your testing methodology.
For bird photography, I usually use the AF-ON-Button for preselect a focus, as example to photograph a bird, which gets landing on a branch. After preselected the focus, I will capture the landing by manual focusing. With the OM-1, MkI, there was no option for disabling bird-detection by using the AF-ON-button. When I forgot to disabling bird-detection, before I tried to focus on the branch, the AF struggled, because he was searching a bird, which was not yet there. With the OM-1, MkII, this problem has been repaired. I'm very happy with this improvement, which was for me one of the most important changes in the new camera.
Love all your clips. What binoculars would you recommend?
I don't know about all the different options. Mine are by Nature-trek and are 8x32. Size and weight are the factor for me. I don't want bigger. 8x40 is better but heavier and larger.
@MikeLaneFRPS Thank you, Mike.
Fantastic video. I have been waiting for someone to do this exact experement and review for a long time. There are so many reviews of thermal monoculars used to spot dogs and sheep which a pretty valueless for me. This video has convinced me of the value of these devices. Thanks so much. Subscribed!
I remember thinking the same. Thanks
My favourite song bird is the Eurasian skylark. It’s pretty much all I hear and it’s great
wonderful video. Beautiful birds.
Many thanks
What a beautiful place you have! It's teeming with creatures and full of life in the field. So wild and incredibly beautiful!
It's really hard, once you get used to the build and feel of good kit, along with those little features that just seem sensible or right, to take a step back. And it's the details, tolerances and niceties that push the price through the roof. I have two MFT lenses... and they don't get much use. What i still use every day (adapted) are the massive and fast ZD SHQ lenses - the f/2 and 2.8 zooms and primes (the 300 and the 90-250 weigh 3.6kg each). But i shoot landscape, environmental and industrial, often in low light - wildlife is really only opportunistic stuff for me. That 150-4/500 reminds me a lot of those ZDs in terms of its apparent build quality and design. That alone makes me covet it in a minor way, despite it being comparatively slow. The price is an obstacle too, but if i take the big ZDs as a baseline... the 300 f/2.8 was US8k on release in 2003, and the 90-250 f/2.8 was over six - i have no idea what that is in today's money - then it almost seems reasonable for what it apparently is. And with all the versatility (reach and MFD) at only 1.8kg, it'd make a great EDC lens. Really appreciate the time and effort you put into the video. Cheers and all the very best - from NZ.
Thank you
Many thanks Mike much appreciated
Thanks
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great Birdsongs, and informative too. You have inspired me to buy a shotgun microphone. I had one bird got a lot of stills and put up my tripod his song was like see ya and gone. I appreciate your patience, Thanks Mike.
Thank you
I love your videos we watch them all We have a field next to were we live we are always in there and i have identifide a few birds with watching your videos thankyou..😊
Cool, thanks
Brilliant and clear information. So right about not being able to read everything. Lol. Thankyou.
Thanks
thank you for this wonderful gift - thank you for the teaching - I always feel that it is a precious godly knowledge, a key to heaven if only I could understand it properly -- if we could love the songbirds enough, we could work together more effectively along the paths of migration to preserve a healthy green world for the future lovely chiff chaff and grasshopper warbler
You, Sir, are a treasure. Thank You, Thank You ….
Thanks
Hi Mike thanks for your videos, they are much appreciated. What is your assessment of Mark 2, are you seeing improvements in auto focus and has issue with autofocus whilst zooming been fixed to your satisfaction. Thankyou
I did a YT film on that. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWZmx7lympCnZbA.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIydxdqIn8bZiKg.html
Very nice songs with very nice poses. But footage could benefit from using 10-bit Log. It is much sharper on OM-1. What microphone do you use to record these calls? They sound very crisp! What distance aproximately is that?
Hello Mike, Do you use AF-C + Tracking or only AF-C? Also thank you for these videos, Love them!
AF-C only
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thank you for the answer :)
An absolute pleasure to watch your video as usual, especially like hearing the woodpecker in the background. I know it’s a lot of skill and work on your part, but I can assure you that it’s much appreciated Sir.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for bringing us another informative and entertaining video of your local birds, Mike. I never miss one of them.
I appreciate that!
breathtaking indeed, thanks so much Mike.
Thank you
Great video. Nice to see some Bushcraft.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice, Thanks. Is there a difference between a shotgun and a rifle mic? Maybe the rifle is more directional?
I think it is the same thing. A parabolic one would increase the volume but gets bulky.
Hi Mike the Nightingale footage was superb… as were the other species but that is a nightmare bird to get on film 🤦♂️ can I please ask a favour… would you kindly tell me the part numbers of your small rig set up for video. I want to but the same set up but there are so many options… two different ones to hold the end of the lens for example. The shop here in Belgium has all the separate bits but they can’t tell me which one I need for the 150-400 pro. Your help would be really appreciated. Thanks Paul
Hi Paul, I had the same problem. The Smallrig web site was very unhelpful. I bought off Ebay one item at a time. I started with the two rods. Then I bought the front lens support. Something like eBay item number:373470853832 There are different sizes, but I think you only have to guess that it will go high enough for your lens. Not that difficult to guess at. Then I bought the more difficult piece to go under the camera. Search Ebay for Smallrig baseplate. such as eBay item number:285164111015 I do not have part numbers, but these all look about the same as I have.
sent my cat mad , lovely to hear them i agree give me a black bird every time ..
Thanks
Llovely Video as usual. Do you dub the song in post?
I have done it often. For this film I do not remember. Goldfinch I did because it was too quiet. The others probably not.
@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks Mike
Delightful!
Thanks
Meeting birds is always fun. I learn a lot from your videos.
Thanks for that!
Dear Mike, your videos draw the line between the true professional and the semi-professional. You not only give advices on what the setting should be but also WHY it should be and HOW it works. This is very educational and fulfilling. Thanks !!
Thanks 👍
Very well done, excellent shots and sequences
Many thanks!
