Using the OM-1 and the 150-400mm lens to film and photograph the beautiful Bearded reedling

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today I visit the Alkborough Flats nature reserve to photograph one of the U.K.s most attractive bird species. The Bearded reedling or Bearded tit.
They are not shy birds. You can get close to them easily, but they are hidden in the reeds a lot and the reed beds are extensive. So it does involve long waits for this small bird to come close, often in small groups.
The OM-1 camera with the 150-400mm lens is an ideal system to photograph and film this mobile species.

I am so pleased that you located your stolen items and hope they have been returned to you as you last used them. Having items stolen is unpleasant at best. If thieves would put effort into being able to use equipment rather than steel it. Hope all goes well for you with the G9 and lives up to expectations. Merry Christmas Mike.

Another great video Mike, I am lucky Leighton Moss is only an hour from me, so Bearded Reedlings can become a common theme for me. The reason why cut out images can be so popular is possibly because people/companies who purchase them have a clean back ground and space around the subject to place copy / text etc. Love Saturday mornings with your videos, one of the highlights of the weekends. Keep it up! :)

@@MikeLaneFRPS Oh Mike I think you’re more than qualified but I can understand your reasoning. There’s a vast majority of my OM images that I never use as I just can’t get them right in photoshop, I’m never sure if the photoshop imported profile over saturates, gives too much contrast or the colour balance isn’t quite right, whatever I’ve got many, many images that never see the light of day. Merry Christmas 😀

I remember attempting to photograph these merry fellas on a very windy day last winter - it was a nightmare, not only were their perches blowing about but the birds would constantly get obscured by reeds... Great photos and footage. The local bearded tirs seem to have gone missing this autumn, which is a shame as I hoped to film them. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on G9 mkii. I use OM1 for photos, but the GH6 for video. Which is fine until i want to switch from 1 to the other! G9 mkii might help with that

You got G9 II? How awsome! I have a buyer for my GH6 and once I sell it I intent do buy G9II. I would love to know your take on how does it work with Olympus lenses on wildlife in terms of AF and IS. I am amazed about the video I get from GH6. 5.7K 60p looks fabulous for wildlife. So much details, cropability and DR when using VLog. But necessity to use ISO2000 to engage DRBoost is so annoying. And AF lags behind. With these two problems solved and with 60fps in stills regardless of the lens Panasonic G9II could become my go to wildlife camera.

I went to Leighton Moss a couple of times to photograph them but both times weather was against us. Eventually went to Old Moor near Barnsley and got some great shots. As you say they're not shy but you need some decent light to photograph them in my opinion.

And it was well worth waiting for. Thanks for the comparison. As expected, it hasn't made my decision any easier, but that's not your fault! I guess I need to decide how much I'd use the superior video on the G9ii. A while back I'd have said I wouldn't, but watching your videos has made me ponder. I noticed that in your kites and buzzards video that mention you use the G9ii for video and the OM1 for stills, which seems to be the opinion of a few others. I can't justify 2 bodies, so a decision will have to be made, but it did make me curious as to which one you'd choose if you could only have the one? Anyway, thanks once more for this, and many of your other videos I've watched. @@MikeLaneFRPS

If I were filming more I think the Lumix g 9ll might have been my choise for filming. But I have so much olympus and OM gear that I will stick with my OM1’s. I have two of them because I loved the camera so much after I had used it for a while so when a friend wanted to sell hers I bought it from her. Both OM systems and Panasonic make excelent cameras, it’s almost two years since the OM1 entered the market so it’s not hard to understand that the lumix g 9 ll have some advantadges. Is it enough for everyone to swich from OM1 to lumix g 9 ll, absolutely not and who knows when the next camera from OMsystems come? Who knows… Merry Christmas Mike and thank you for this years beutiful films and images. 🎉
