wow great comparison thank you I think I love the attack and the clean note separation of the Adirondack top but the bass on the Engelmann is noticable seems like the highs on the Engelmann has more chime to them also

Hard to tell how much is the wood and how much is strings and/or 2 years played. I can only hope the tone softens as much over time on the new mando I bought, but the difference in new versus old strings here is probably the biggest factor.

I really enjoy your picking - not just technique but sensitivity to nuance which honors the basic melody without turning it into a mere stage for showing off technical skill. But I sure wish you'd dump that Chinese box and get yrself a good mandolin - like the new Gibson F5 G selling for 6K. So much beauty is simply lost in that cheap wooden box. Just no depth to the tone. Those things are made for cheap in China by Chinese luthiers who didn't grow up listening to our mandolin music nor who have been playing one for half of their lives at least. The profit margin must be huge for Northfield. All they do is stain and varnish the boxes and then set them up. They do NO carving and tap-testing the tops. So Kyla - keep up the fine playing and PLEASE ask mom, dad, aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings, friends to give you advances on your next 5 birthdays and Christmases so that you get yourself a mandolin that does full justice to the notes you're producing. the Chinese guys can manufacture lovely boxes but they don't know or care how the damn things are supposed to sound!!! Love ya!

oh Kylie - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - beg, borrow, or steal a decent mandolin - that Northfield Chinese box is just a brick and 3/4s of the depth of sound production that your skill level can produce is totally lost. A Chinese mandolin is a Chinese mandolin is a Chinese mandolin and no matter how much money one throws away on one the sound production simply is NOT there. Save up, go to every relative and beg for an advance on your next 5 birthdays and Christmases and buy an American-made instrument built by someone who knows how to carve and tone-tap the top - someone with American ears who knows what a good mandolin should sound like. You can teach a Chinese luthier how to carve and cut the wood but you can't give them American ears needed to HEAR what an American mandolin is supposed to sound like. And there is no such thing as a mandolin that has "a decent sound for the money." Mandolins aren't cheap - esp the F-models - so you can't find anything truly "decent" for less than 6K. PLEASE get yourself a good mandolin!
