I do like these videos as I try to balance my reading between classics (I am reading mostly older books atm) and newer releases (newest has been the Children of series by Tchaikovsky and Eversion by Reynolds I believe). From this batch the most interesting to me would be the time travel book. But none really stood out to me that much, my current TBR is way more interesting :D

The Merciless is so f#$k up. The sequels aren't as good as that first pink one but they're still a wild ride. I highly recommand. But indeed... pretty gruesome for YA. 😅

For everyone intrigued by All the Water in the World, I highly recommend checking out Arboreality by Rebecca Campbell. At the time of writing, it's the most recent recipient of the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize.

SPOILERS SPOILERS Hello, I think the implications of the book ending were huge!!! Gigantic!! Everyone was cut off from each other. They could not travel to and from the Ring worlds anymore. Families were lost to each other for ever. Humanity did not have the capability to travel to the various worlds without the Ring space so the destruction of that capability was a sacrifice for all of humanity. Some colonies were still dependent on shipments from the Sol system. All of those colonies will die. Huge implications for all of humanity, not just the crew. And I thing Naomi is one of the strongest female characters I've encountered in literature. She leaves Marco AND he child because she must. Not because she can't take the responsibility of the relationships but because she knows what Marco will make her do. She leaves Jim when he is all self engaged. She guides Amos through issues of conscience. She goes out on her own in book 5 to find her son, has to leave him AGAIN and she has to kill Cin, who she likes, because he gets in her way. What she does in that ship to signal a warning to the Rocinante was ingenious, brave and nearly heroically suicidal. Her composure when she is held prisoner in book 3 or 4, with the first colony we see on a Ring world, takes a strength could not muster. And then there is she, rebel leader, from the shadows, being shipped secretly around using her brain to fight against humanities foes, well, she is just awesome. I think she is one of the strongest characters ever written because she IS flawed but her strengths shine through regardless of her failures. She stands next to Jim, yes, but she is her own person. I would argue he is more dependent on her than she is on him. They are my favorite couple in literature. Avasarala, my favorite character. Amos is a close second. I love his backstory in the short story, The Churn. I also love the presentation of science in these books. I felt smarter after reading them. It is just so well integrated into the writing.

So nice to have some sci fi recommendations! I'm participating in a reading challenge that I want to fill up with SF. One of the prompts is reading a new release the month it comes out, so now I know what to fill those slots in with. Love your channel! 🛸👽🌃

As you were describing the ridiculous sounding premise for the Scalzi, I was basically predicting and uttering the exact same thing as yourself about his older work and the silly-leaning modern stuff. I’ve actually given up reading him these days. I’ve got Powell’s “Future’s Edge” on my future preorder list though! February, I think… cover reveal happened earlier today (15th).

A ball of cheese instead of the moon is not necessarily such a stupid idea. It could have been done by an alien civilization or a computer simulation we live in to test our psychology. From this point of view, it is even more interesting to see how all these diametrically opposed characters will react to such absurdity.
