Hey everyone, Zakk Hess from upstate NY!
I'm a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Manager from 9-5, but I have a passion for woodworking in my off-hours. The dream is to one day take this "hobby" to the next level.
My channel focuses not necessarily on how one should go about creating, but how I personally approach creating. My goal is to handle every project with a meticulous mentality as if the product was going to be in my own home.
I aspire to create functional art that people will cherish for many years.

I admire your craftsmanship and skills!
Very nice!
Looks very good
It is nice, but I think it would look better without epoxy river
An absolutely beautiful statement piece. Whoever ends up with this will be a very lucky.
My philosophy is “If you don’t leave a little DNA in each project you didn’t give it your all”
Quality video! Wouldn't change a thing, lovely work
Very fine work. I learned from your knowledge and skills. Thanks
V E R Y nice job. Excellent, it's worth more IMO
How much did it sell for?
$1500
@thedoublekayway Congratulations. That's a helluva piece you made. You ought to be proud of it.
I'd say that $10,000 is a better price.
Very nice. Absolutely amazing. And absolutely worth every bit.
You really earned my subscription. I so appreciate that you included & explained all the things that went wrong and how you fixed them. It's a truly beautiful piece of furniture & art! And for the record, I thought your camera work was pretty good, considering you were using a camera you weren't familiar with. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this.
to make your temp molds better for release seal wood and apply paste wax with several coats.
Nice.
Dude! Gorgeous piece! Re: your use of a new camera…..if that’s your first attempt your ceiling on video production skills will be as high as you want! Great work. Your narration and description content is brilliant. To me it was very detailed and precise. I like that style of content. I hope your Table generated a lot of money for that worthwhile cause.
When’s the next one? Looking forward to your next project
I took a little hiatus from projects, now I'm finishing up a dining table commission, then I'm back on the YT horse. I'd say expect a video early spring, and then hopefully videos at a more frequent rate after that. If you've ever seen the "chaos" concept with cutting boards, imagine that, but MUCH bigger and cooler. The project will be 1 of 1.
Nice product. Thinking of getting into woodworking/epoxy work myself. Thanks for the inspiration.
Awesome! Glad I could inspire in some capacity. Expensive hobby / business, but man is it rewarding creating functional art.
ABSOLUTELY WOW
Thank you !
That is a gorgeous piece! Great work. Did you use SketchUp or any software to create the design/dimensions of the legs?
I did, yes. I used SketchUp to determine dimensions and splay. I didn't show that part as I figured it wouldn't be that desirable of content for this build, but I will definitely be showing it used in future projects. I often use it to rough mock up projects. Really helps determine what dimensions "feel" balanced.
Liked the desk and the video. Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Thank you! Really hopinh at some point I can publish every 6 weeks instead of every 6 months.
I LOVE this! The table is beautiful, the legs with the rainbow detailing are amazing too - here before your channel blows up I dont know your YT aspriations but youve bought the camera now (great btw) if you get a video out once/twice a month and do a little overview of the finished work for a youtube short that links back to the related build video your channel will sky rocket, you've got a nice voice to listen to, your great at wood working, camera work and editing youve just got to get the content out consistently ❤
I appreciate the kind word! Especially about the skills part. Fingers crossed the channel does take off eventually, but you're spot on, the consistency will be the big thing. Trying to balance personal life, professional life (9-5), and other things, it gets to be a lot to dedicate the time needed for a project and video of this magnitude. I'd love to be able to publish a video every 6 weeks or so, but my life just doesn't allow it...YET. Hoping that 2024 allows me to publish every 8-10 weeks at a minimum. I have a laundry list of great video ideas, just the dedicated time is tough to come by. Standby, I'm trying :)
As a black walnut desk owner, this is a gorgeous rendition of a live edge desk! I'm not a desk drawer kinda guy but really appreciate the thought and quality that you've put into it! Subbed!!
Thank you! I'm hoping to publish another desk video sometime next year, It also has a drawer component, but a different take on it. I think you'll really enjoy that one if you like this piece. Thanks for watching!
Incredible work 👍👍
Thank you!
I like the potential of this channel, so I subscribed ❤
I'm optimistic, the biggest thing for me is having the time to create and record projects of this magnitude. I've got very high hopes.
TRABALHO ESPETACULAR, MUITO BOM GOSTO NA ESCOLHA DO MATERIAL , .AS MADEIRAS, AS CORES DO ARCO-ÍRIS ESTÃO EM DEGRADADO, PARECE MUITO BONITO.. UMA OBRA DE ARTE. PARABÉNS! DO RIO DE JANEIRO, BRASIL
Thank you
Wow❤ I love the table and the base is so much more extraordinary and beautiful than a clear straight version, good choice. You could ask for much more than 2500 !!!!!!
thank you.
Fantastic video! It is so well shot and informative! Honestly, you made it look so easy from start to finish. I know the first rainbow lamination attempt wasn’t what you planned but I thought the wavy lines in there looked like you were on to something interesting. Do you think you could still use it in a future project? This table turned out absolutely fantastic. As I watched the last clips of the final table results I could not help but shake my head in disbelief of how beautiful this table turned out! Man you did great! Too bad this is the first video of yours I’ve seen because I would have LOVED to try to win this at auction for both the looks and the cause it was intended to serve. Bravo 👏🏽 ❤
Thank you so much for the kind words! The video didn't gain much traction until long after the auction had closed, unfortunately. I think in the future I may have to do a "for sale" on my website sort of listing when I have a project of this magnitude. I look forward to hearing what you think of future projects.
This is really beautiful. You did a great job!💞
Thank you so much!!
Thumbs up on Trevor Project!
a foundation that exists to save lives is an easy one to support.
on your bases. No reason you can't sand (and finish for that matter) prior to final assembly. A little fiddly to be sure, but better than hours of hand sanding.
Although partly true, very inconvenient for this operation. With the glue up any misalignment or slip in the joint and it will have to be resanded. Not to mention the potential for sanding the area where the joints meet and compromising the fit...or having to round over the pieces after glue up. I appreciate the advice, but if I were to do it again, I'd still do it the way I did. Order of operations was HIGHLY considered when making these bases.
@@thedoublekayway funny this endeavor. I see it the other way. lol. More chance for inconsistency with varied access to the surfaces. of course we are both correct in our respective shops. Great piece btw.
@@StoneyMeyerhoeffer 100%! I definitely appreciate the recommendation. I like seeing and hearing how others approach situations and tackle problems. I tell people all the time, the “right” way to do something, is the way that works to achieve the result desired (as long as it’s done safely).
Do you have access to like local walnut you can slab out personally from tree removal or buy separate. Just curious cuz the few videos I've just started watching I see you kinda just pull them from like storage corners. So I was just curious cuz I buy when I can but I live where walnut is super rare like 1-15,000 trees in at the absolute highest estimates. Run into the same exact problem with red cedar
I've never showed it in any of my videos (I have showed it on IG), but I have about 6000 BF of wood that I've bought over the years. I frequently pull from this stash for projects, but for something like this project where I was looking for a specialized material, I order it from out of state and have it sitting in the shop until the project starts. Long story short, I frequently buy wood in and out of state from suppliers - I do not harvest and mill myself.
Just saw your video (a year late). To answer your question, $2,500 is WAY underpriced. It's a beautiful piece of work worth a lot more! Great job!
Well said!
YES
THANKS!
How much has it cost for all your tools and machines? Curious cause i want to get into this..
What I have in value today definitely isn't what it takes to do the work, or do it well. I started off with a cheap black and decker drill and a used 1990's miter saw. I slowly built up my tool inventory. I've put back almost every dollar from projects into tools and supplies. If still curious though, I've got about ~$35-40k USD in tools / accessories.
I really like the result, but maybe do not release all those epoxy shavings into your environment next time?
$2500 is a little low. The only advice i would give is to get the project done quicker. You made $2500 on this one desk but thats over a 9 month period so basically you only made about $9 a day on this desk.
I appreciate the sentiment, but I did not work on it every day for 9 months... which is why it took 9 months to finish. This isn't my full-time work. I made out just fine on a daily, and even an hourly rate.
Wow that rainbow strip looks amazing, seriously incredible work
Thank you! I had the vision to incorporate that from the get-go and I definitely was pleased with that part of the piece.
your filming skills are pretty much on par with your woodworking skills ;) both are great, you found a new sub - which you deserve a hundred times more of what you currently have! especially love the legs!
Well, damn! Thank you for that. Maybe if I can start posting more than once a year I can get that 100x ;)
@@thedoublekayway that sure helps ;)
😍😍
Thanks for watching!
💯 it’s worth 2500 ! Amazing job ! Well done.
Yes! Thank you!
hope it brought in a bunch of much needed funds. the trevor project and the trans lifeline have saved my life. it is nice to see the mix of this in my woodworking feed. i hope you post more videos ;) the table looks great. those legs... both the shape and the veneer rainbow... love. it. i haven't used colored veneers like that before. reminds me of the colored mdf i see people in the uk use a lot. i will def have to check them out. i would love to see a video of yours with the rainbow board that looks less swirling and more like ink bleeding into each other... i saw it on your instagram. might be crayon and not ink? this is great too. i just have done epoxy like this (albeit in one color and not multiple) and not like the other so i am curious to see it being done. i also love it with the burl wood... all so beautiful. and again, those legs ;) thanks for sharing! look forward to more from you, i subscribed. thanks for doing the fundraiser. and it is happy pride somewhere!
Beautiful table foe a great cause. Nice video too. Keep it up.
Thank you! Will do!
I'd watch a tour of your workspace video. You have some nice tools
Thanks for the idea. I've added some machines since this video (5HP 20" planer) and things are getting a bit tight. I live at a friends, so I'm confined to a bit of a "smaller" space (20'x24') - I'm hoping to get my own place and bigger space eventually.. if so I'll def do a "shop tour" for those interested.
No matter who you made it for, it's beautiful.
I appreciate that message. Thank you for the positivity.
I'm not a woodworker, but I would happily pay £2500 for this desk. As you can see I'm in England and that seems a VERY reasonable price to pay for all that work. I also agree with you that finishing is the most important aspect of any kind of build. Ben Crowe at Crimson Custom Guitars often says the same. His point is that the last 5 -10% of the work you do is always the FIRST THING your customer sees. If the first impression isn't good enough, there is nothing you can do to change your customer's opinion! Well done with this project. For somebody with only two years of experience, working out of such a small space and without a workbench this is a fantastic achievement!
This is my first time watching your videos and I’m enjoying them very much. You will continue to learn and grow as the years pass and you’ll become a better and more proficient artist in your work and design. I Look 👀 forward to seeing more work and progress in your videos and work. Just a thought 💭 “ I’m 84 yrs old.
I sure hope so. Design is certainly where I lack proficiency. I'm working every day to improve on that and the fine details of woodworking. I appreciate the kind words and I hope you're here for many many more years to see where this goes :)
Gorgeous table! Wish I could have bought it ❤🌈
Thank you! I do take commissions on one-offs like this, but right now I'm a bit packed for a few months.
Oh my gosh, man, I love your videos. Very, very informative. Please keep 'em comin'.
I'm certainly going to try. The process is a lot of work, but I enjoy it, and I enjoy seeing/hearing that its well received!
Spectacular
thanks!
