Kayaking around the world, mostly in Sweden. Here are tips, reviews and kayaking trips I have done. Some videos are more action and other are just from a beautiful place where I have been kayaking.
Besides videos from Sweden there are from Norway, Greenland, Alaska, Indonesia and more.
There are also some videos about my job as a ship pilot.

Real rescues, real incident management and looks like everyone kept a cool head - those sudden surging waves can always catch us out regardless of how careful/confident we are paddling. Is it just the camera angle or was it quite shallow there in places? Anyway, you guys nailed it!
@@jonathanhamnett4044 thank you. Yes there are rocks around. I was out doing some rock hopping, and where we did he rescue Hanne even stood on a shallow rock for a few seconds. None of us were at any time nervous or scared, that’s what a lot of training gives you.
Your videos are excellent but they don't need any music, especially not heavy metal, that drowns your narration.
Thank you. I have already started to reduce the music and the volume. But some videos need music or they will be a bit boring. Just my own opinion.
@@JonasAlexanderson Your videos and voiceovers could never be boring to other sea kayakers!
@@studebaker4217 Thank you ❤️
Can I ask what you think of the Valley Etain. Is it a barge in your experience or not? Would you get bored with it? Many thanks.
Hi, well a somewhat hard question to answer as it got two different answers. The PE Etain is a barge! If you are going to use it for mostly day trips it will be very boring on the other hand it’s an ok expedition kayak. The fibre glass version is better as it got a bit of rocker and is lighter. But if you are looking for a somewhat bigger kayak that is nice to paddle in most conditions, the Nordkapp is a much better option. If you don’t have too much gear or don’t do multi day expeditions I can highly recommend the Anas Acuta.
I always like your videos. You have a high degree of details and a lot of perspective when comparing with other products.
Thank you for the nice words!
The Gram paddles look great though I haven’t tried it. Also, strange that Facebook deleted your video.. does it have music?
Yes, but I have license for the music and it was ok with KZread.
It’s because of the keywords. Suppose you called it ‘getting a spanking in the rough’. 😊
Is it calling or calming glaviers that cause tsunamis?
Actually it's called "calving" glacier. Yes that caused the tsunami, it is replacing the water when calving and the waves it creates are completely different from waves created by wind.
Was a little nervous watching kayaks flip.. but just shows if people are prepared, it’s not a big issue. Loved your recovery with the roll!
Thank you. That is why I practice a lot, was out today and did about 30 rolls.
@@JonasAlexanderson wow.. I need to do that too. My Rebel Greenland T just arrived to Hong Kong port.. should be able to unbox and try it this weekend. I’ll be practicing my rolls with it!
@@Fishaholicboy you are getting a nice kayak. I was doing the practice in my Rebel Ilaga today (it was already on the top of my car and I was too lazy to take any other kayak).
Great to see this very well made video, with real life incidents and dealing with them. Very interested to hear how it was made. A new career?
Already part of my new career 😀. And thanks Victor 👍🏼
Not surprised she needed a rescue as i also have a Romany sport amd its a very tippy boat and kucky not to have lost a hatch cover as they aren't a great fit . Yes over all not a good boat but strangely gets good reviews 🤔
I have tried a Romany Classic, far too big in the cockpit for me. Never tried the Surf.
Looks like you had a great fun day and always good to see real world rescues!
It’s funny how two cold, windy and rainy days can be just wonderful in a kayak 😃
Very interesting and action-filled video with a little bit of drama there with the rescue! Cool speed gauges in the video. Is that from the Insta360 or some sort of software add-on for using the GPS data of the GoPro?
Thank you. The speed gauge is from the remote control used with Insta360 X3. First time I try it.
@@JonasAlexanderson Nice. Looks very cool actually.
I epoxied my paddle to my hands and the boat is glued to the bottom of my left foot. Best decision I’ve ever made
Nice video. Thx! I commented a few times on your video in the pass which I enjoy. I’m planning a trip from US to Finland in the summer ‘25. I was wondering if you had time to meet up and discuss Finland kayaking! I would be with my girlfriend and we plan to rent a camper van and tour all over your country. Thx Dave
If I'm home I love to meet you. But I live on the other side of Sweden and I'm not sure if I have the time to go to Åland (Finland) in the summer. I have plans to go to northern Norway and maybe Iceland as well 2025. But I'm always willing to talk online or you are welcome to our big house in Sweden (search for Mellerud). This summer it's off to Vancouver for kayaking.
@@JonasAlexanderson we were in the north fjords (less tourists) in Iceland last summer. The weather was excellent! Hope it’s good for you. I forgot you are in Sweden. We plan to go far north into Lapland - Ok, I’ll keep in touch. Thx! Good paddling.
Different colours for everything, bi coloured kayak with contrasting colours and straight lines seperating colours. Straight lines rarely occur in nature and any colour can be invisible in different conditions so don't coordinate, it isn't a fashion show.
The thing is, no matter what colour you use, always expect that you are not seen. I have been a ship navigator for 35 years and know how hard it is to spot a kayak, no matter the colours of the kayak or paddler’s clothes.
Nice valley
A Sea kayak for living in and camping from all 4 months of spring and summer, Fall.
personally I use a level V unless I'm kayak fishing. Brand doesn't really matter as long as it fits. I don't recommend the generic "orange" jackets but they will work if it's all you have. NRS zen and astral green have been my favorite so far.
Made in China?
Living up in Northern Norway and rolling all year around, I wear Brooks tuilik during winther/spring, and my Comfort Paddling tuilik during summer/autumn. I prefer the CP rather than my Reed. Unfortunately CP is difficult to find nowadays. I don’t know if they are out of business.
That pure, fresh glacier water now has just a little more pee in it.
I have been to Corsica several times by kayak. For me, it's the most beautiful and varied place I've ever been. I love this island. I will go back there many times :)
I really liked Corsica, many amazing places. But there are things I don't like. No camping on the beaches is my main complaint. Northern Norway, Alaska, Greenland and many places in Sweden are better because fewer people and not so many "don't's". Amazing nature in those places. But again, I loved paddling on Corsica.
Hello again after 2 years. I believe our paths didn't cross at that time. Can I ask you advice for where is best to purchase the Anas Acuta? What is the best kayak store. Many thanks,
All Valley kayaks are very, very expensive now (but still worth it). In Sweden we only have one dealer, Nautopp, that sells their kayaks. Check here and for dealers at the topp: www.valleyseakayaks.com/
Rolling in cold conditions hurts!
Thank you so much - just the video I was looking for: pros, cons - all there!!!!
It’s a very low volume boat that’s lively. I took a test paddle, jeez, I. The early 2000’s at Kayak Centre of RI.
It's one of my bigger kayaks. I have 8 now and the AA will always be my favorite.
Thanks for a nice video again. Will you do a similar video on paddles?
Thanks. A good suggestion.
Aside from visibility, for a composite boat if you are going for the lightest weight clear coat gel adds the least weight, yellow the most (in a pure colour) but some fancy colour schemes with multiple colours and sparkles add even more weight.
What computer you are using for video editing? 🙂
A PC I have built myself. Don't remember the specs, but I will build a new in the autumn.
Super
Cool i did my military service onboard Atle 1994
Allow my2cents on this toppic: The Insta, that i used (a one and a 360 x.x) were both very much flawed - either by the software resp. app, they are providing, which was unusable to me (unstable, not realy intuitive... the "dekstop-app" is unsable to) or by hardware: i used two 360s, both failed (they both stopped at round the same time i unpacked and used them - 30ish so minutes later. one of them had also issues with the sealing, so that i did not use on the kayak. Currently, i'm using 2 older, chaper but very much working GoPro 7 and GP10 on the chest ... without issues... Insta has lost all credibility with me, I will never ever use anything out of their hands ever again.
Glass is class but plastic is fantastic! 😀
You're very interesting kayaker I love your videos , maybe one day we 'll meet
Hi i been offered a second hand Brooks tuilik it size XL, im 1.75mts tall and weight about 88 kilos, in your experience wil it fit me good? I cant test it since is in other region of my country. Thank you in advance for any tip.
I'm not at home (working as a kayak guide in Antarctica atm) so I can't check the size I have. But I think I got a L and it's ok for me. I'm 1.70cm and just under 90kg. I think you probably will find a XL a bit too large but I also think it can work.
@@JonasAlexanderson Hi well thank you for your advice and taking time to reply to me. You are not so far from me now since i live in the Patagonia Argentina. Are you with Santigo Arias by the way?
@@Comanderkraus no, I'm with Norwegian company Hurtigruten.
Your Skin-on-frame looks great, which of your kayaks do you now prefer for day paddling? Is it still the Anas Acuta, the Rebel Ilaga or the Skin-on-frame?
The Anas Acuta will always be my #1 with my new sof as a very good second.
Tack!
God jul 🎄
Hi Jonas. Peter here. I am a huge fan of your videos. I particularly am a fan of your Swedish winter videos. Here in Brisbane, Australia where I live, the weather and water temperature is amazingly comfortable all year. I cannot even comprehend what it must be like paddling in snow and icy conditions, but I guess if you live in a Swedish climate and, like me, wish to paddle all the year round, you prepare. Love the 360 camera. Wish I could afford one for some of my adventures. I have had some scary moments twisting my action cam around in spicy conditions to get a good shot. Nearly coming to grief, but getting a good result. A 360 cam would appear much safer in that situation. I am 69 now, and find that more and more I need to keep paddling. My kilometres seem to increase as I get older. Do you find that?? The archilpeligo (is that a word)? seems a fantastic paddlling location and I thank you for showing it. Like you I also have a small fleet of high end kayaks and agree with one of your previous videos that there is not really one that does everything well. Take care, and keep your excellent content coming. BTW, I have attached a link here to some video I took of a paddle to Peel Island off the Queensland coast using sails. Something you may not see much in Sweden. Cheers...Peter kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZ2G0NOaibHag7w.html
Hi Peter. Thanks for your kind words. I have been hoping to do longer trips since I retired, but that is not the case for me. I do more courses and trips with beginners or intermediate paddlers and that tend to be shorter trips. But I have slightly more days in a kayak now. (I will do a recap video of 2023 after New year.) The 360 camera is amazing and now as I have a remote control, use it even more. That and my DJI Action 3. I don’t use my GoPros as much any more, I don’t think they are very reliable. I have it on my bucket list to go to Australia or New Zealand for kayaking. Not 2024 though as next year is almost fully booked already :) (Antarctica, Finland, Norway and Canada are some places I will go to). I will check your videos and thanks again for watching mine. Have a Merry Christmas now! /Jonas
It looks a beautiful area to explore - made more wonderful with the snow
Here is another video from the area but in the summer. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nW1_mM57aMe1ops.htmlsi=PFnAv0fs9dYme_wt
Love the music! Such an awesome and beautiful moment to share with friends
Thank you. The last piece of music was played by my youngest son.
Really beautiful! Makes you want to go to Sweden in winter
Sorry to say but it can also be grey and rainy or very, very cold. But days like in the video, it’s stunningly beautiful.
Very interesting and inspiring. The idea with the glued mount to the foam is great, too!
Thank you. I'm not the inventor of that but I think @Norwegianwoodpaddles is the one. I'm always happy to steal a good idea 🤣
Hmmm, claiming any kayak is the best is a bit extreme. This one may be the best for him, for what he wants to do but we're not all the same nor do we all want to do the same thing. I like to cover distance so for me its the rockpool Tarzan and no I don't expect that to be everyone's favorite.
Did you notice I put a question mark behind my statement? I still believe it's the best all around kayak there is. I have seven kayaks that most of them are better at a specific thing, like rolling, surfing, long expeditions and so on. But for someone very tall or very small it is probably not the best kayak. Still, my AA is good at everything but not the best for everything, but no kayak is.
Thank you for your video. 2 questions: Do you use some kind of case or lense protectors? And if so, did you experience fog or water condensation due to warm camera/cold outside?
No case. You need some kind of protection when you don’t use the camera. The lenses are very exposed. But when using it I have had no problems but you have to be sure the battery is completely locked in position or it will not stay watertight.
Thank you for your reply @@JonasAlexanderson I'd be also curious what mount and maybe poles you use to fix the camera to your kayak as seen in your last video.
@@tobi.wants.to.paddle I’m thinking of doing a video about just that. It’s hard to explain without showing it. Will will try to do one next week/
@@JonasAlexanderson That would be great!
Here is the video you wanted: kzread.info/dash/bejne/npejq5OBe7CYerw.html
Clearly some fun being had there 😎
Fun and cold
in these weather and marine conditions, what characteristics should the safest, seaworthy and navigation-friendly kayak have: be maneuverable or directional? be narrow and fast or wide and stable? Thank you
For exemple would be better a dagger stratos, valley gemini or a valley sirona, northshore atlantic?
Most sea kayaks that are good for surfing and rock hopping are short (4.0 to 5.0 meters) and somewhat wide (52-60 cm). My Valley Gemini is 4.5 meters long and 54 cm wide and with a lot of rocker. That is important for taking the waves and turning quickly. If it's tracking to good it's to hard to turn. So, a lot of rocker and a skegg for when you just want to go straight.
Thank you but I don't understand If a surf and rockhopping kayak is a good sailing touring kayak in rough water too. Can you explain me?
@@massimoaugua kayak good for rough waters is good in all types of rough waters. And this are sea kayaks, so they are ok for touring also but usually not very fast kayaks. It's like my Anas Acuta. Very good for surfing, touring and rolling. It's not the best for everything but good at everything.
It is really a very unusual design. I learn both wing (sprint) technique and Greenland canted blade technique and I just have to ask this question: how do you use this paddle? 🤯
You use it like a wing paddle, not canted like a Greenland paddle. I’ve noticed that you love it or hate it, haven’t met anyone who is indifferent to it.
@@JonasAlexanderson thank you. If I ever come across it, I'll definitely give it a try. 👍
