Knit all the things is a knitting podcast. Knit all the things is a place where I share all the things I’m knitting all the things I want to knit, and all things yarn. My name is Lauryl, although you can find me all places as westmaven. I have been knitting since I was a young girl. Over the last 4 years knitting has become more of an obsession than a hobby. I want to try it all, from intarsia, brioche, color work and knitting in the dark. Well at least knitting without looking. I mostly knit "continental" style though I was taught "English" first. I can and do crochet, it is what I learned first, and still like to play around with. I am from and live in Portland, or, you may occasionally see my dogs poke their cute noses into some of my videos, but it is unlikely that my kids will have cameos. Besides knitting, I am a reiki master, and give human design readings. I hope, with this channel, to connect with other creatives, knitters, crocheters, and yarn lovers.

I’m new to knitting and have crocheted for years but was wondering what circular needles are best
I have a longer video here kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaprmLSzoKioqdI.htmlsi=lDDr8APu8qYvhVUB depending on your price point I give different recommendations. But please don’t hesitate to message me if you have any questions
A couple of adds - clover bamboo fixed circular is my go to for using with slippery yarn or with plant based fiber. The bamboo makes it easier on the joints. The cords actually fold up really well and I slide the end into the needle pocket. I think I just have fingering size because I haven't knitted any worsted weight plant based yarns. Ditto on hiya hiya and change small circumference for socks. I don't like the clover as much. Slightly too long but I do use them on sleeves. I have only tried knit picks interchangeable so far. I like that I can buy only the sizes I use and they have both lacquered wood or metal. I have always been told that lnitting needles are disposable so the cheapness doesnt bother me. Its also not a big deal if I can find some tips since it's inexpensive to replace. Only one cord has gotten a bend but it hasn't hindered anything other than looks. I like lace knitting so I suspect some pointy sets would be good to invest in.
PS knit picks has try needle packs. It's size 6 lacquered wood and size 7 metal. They are the most used sizes, aparently.

Love your knits and I'm hoping to now get some Noro for the Cloud Blouse! I would definitely cast on the Drevo 💖
I did Alpine Bloom by Caitlin Hunter. I did it with sport and used spincycle for the colorwork. It was a totally enjoyable knit. So much so, I am considering doing it again.
I know this is an older video, but I saw that the answer isn't in the comments, so here it is: 398.2 is the Dewey Decimal system number for fairy tales and folklore.
Yay! I stumbled upon your channel and have the same Noro yarn, which is lovely, but so difficult to find the right pattern for. Your Cloud Blouse is beautiful so I will be casting that one on in my beautiful Noro yarn. Thanks for the inspiration. Also, the MJ Mucklestone book is fabulous!
@knitgirl.7676 I'm so happy you found me and we get to hang out ! I hope I can see your cloud blouse when you finish it
I really like that yellow stripe across the chest of your multicolor cloud sweater! That turned out so nicely. 🎉
Hillary that’s my favorite too 🖤
I love your multi coloured sweater is beautiful on you.
Thank you Sharon🖤
I'm so glad you knew how to handle the crows, very relieved to hear it was only at your old house they menaced you and you remain in peace here! I finished the Plumette a little while ago and a little hmmmmmm-meh? about it? Maybe my row gauge was too loosey goosey or maybe it was because I was paranoid about arm circumference, my modifications caused it to end up super bat-wing-low-yoke and I'm not sure I'm loving seeing that form. It's resting in my basket awaiting weaving in ends but contemplating actually frogging it. Possibly worth giving it another go or maybe I'd make something else.
Oh I was going to say I have a cumulus-tee-to-be of my own and I like the sound of a thinner i-cord for it. I bought Bark pure silk because that was in stock when I impulse went for it, but kind of wish I could do it in Coal. Maybe someday I'll do an O-neck in black.
Sandy I always think it is wise to let projects rest before frogging, but I will say I knit a sweater that I just couldn't get over the oversize yoke and really don't wear it, so anything that you can do to make it something you love to wear do it! (after all its all knitting)
Your cloud blouse is stunning!
Thank you Nicole ! 🖤
What size did you knit and what size needle did you use?
I knit a medium for the cloud blouse and needle that was suggested
@@westmaven Thank you!
@@westmaven and you used 2 skeins of yarn? Beautiful result!
This cloud blouse looks amazing!
Thank you Melanie 🖤
i've been eyeing off the kompeito for a while but there aren't any stores close to me that sell it so i'd be buying it blind online. do you think it would work ok for summer garments?
I think it would be lovely, I would certainly make a tee with it 🖤
I’m considering the Geometer sweater, too!😊 Your Piña Colada is so gorgeous-I love seeing the progress you’re making on it.
Tracy that’s fun! If I don’t use this yarn I definitely will make one let me know when you start and we can knit along 🖤
Maybe the Chessflower by Wollmuschi would be good as a colorwork tee?
I hadn’t seen this pattern before thank you for sharing 🖤
Your crow story was fascinating , very kind of you to share it! I like both sweater designs a lot, so I’m no help there 😊
Lorna, thank you for being here 🖤
Hi Lauryl! I’m working on sleeves for my Rumble Raglan and probably starting another one (yay for short sleeves!) a Tosta Tank and an Oslo hat over the course of the next week! Good to catch up!💕 🧶💕🐢 Lorien
Lorien! Hello knitting bestie! I saw your rumble and I think it’s SPECTACULAR 🤩
I did a three stitch eye cord on my cumulus tee around the neck and arms, and then did the regular four stitch around the hem
Serenity thank you for letting me know, I think I need to do the same thing 🖤
I have 3 skeins of the exact same Noro, you've inspired me to use it for the Cloud blouse. Ty :) Can you update us on the wet blocking next video?
@gallifreyfalls I will share on my next video. I typically like to share after I have wet blocked but I just had to share it early 🖤
I loved your discussion of the cloud blouse. You're kind of knit fluencing me now to think of what yarn I could knit it in from my stash. Instead of another miserina, have you knit an Alpine bloom? It uses two skeins of the spincycle though.
Amy I definitely thought of the alpine bloom (I have made one) even just altering the color work slightly to make one skein work 🖤
Check out the luminos tee by yamagara, interesting design but you may not like the crop
You could use your Spincycle with this tee, also check out the cardigan she has designed, she uses intarsia down the sleeves
Thank you for the suggestion Sylvia, also it made me smile you know me so well about crops I love them on others but they aren’t quite for me. I have nt looked closely at the pattern so it may be possible to lengthen 🖤 I am happy you’re here
I love your Cloud, and that beautiful yarn. I'm itching to try some Suri alpaca, I've nevef tried it before...maybe it would make a nice Cloud. I'm going to knit the Drevo. I have some sport-weight yarn that I was using for another sweater, but was frogged. Only issue is the colour...too close to my skin tone. This week I cast-on the Agave. I can't remember if you've knit it...but it would look fabulous on you ❤
Sandra a cloud in Suri would be pure magic✨ I can’t wait to see what you think about the Drevo construction, I want to knit it just for that reason, as far as your yarn, you really want to love the sweater, one thing that came to mind was a bright Sophie scarf you can wear with it that’s more your color or save it for a colorwork sweater
Love your Cloud blouse. Curious what you think of that same yarn in the Rota Jumper. I'm a bit worried about the fragility you demonstrated. Youv'e inspired me to try the Pina Colata. I have the yarn but haven't cast on it. I love a challenge. Ixve been considering not using bobbins but letting the yarn lengths loose. What is yoyr thought? Anyway love your styling and podcasts.
Suzanne I don’t know that the kompeito would be ideal for the rota more because it is thinner than the yarn required, but once it’s knit strength wise it would be fine. I hope that helps, I really love mine in illimani sabri 2 (the thicker one) also I am excited for you to knit the piña colada I think you could have the strings hanging without bobbins but the bobbins aren’t so bad I do have to untangle them a little to start, I say try it with a swatch to decide what works best for you
Love the sweater!
I feel like if you're that between two patterns, you haven't found the right pattern yet. Maybe keep looking, find the one where you go "that's it, that's the one" without any hesitation
Sarah Jo you have a point, very good advice 🖤
I love the sweater and I like your modifications. I have some Noro that I haven’t used. something similar would work well. It’s nice to know how stretch is in the yarn.
I can’t wait to see what you make with it I think you will like it it blocks soft.
I knit in the car or in dr offices, really anywhere i have to wait!
At home
What is the size do you wear for your alpine bloom ?
@@louiseleduc5582 size 3 🖤
On a cruise or airplane
I love The Mole, at least the original versions with Anderson Cooper as the host. The celeb edition with Corbin Bernsen is pretty hilarious also. Definitely watch The Traitors if you haven't already. Alan Cumming as the host alone is sublime!
I’m definitely going to check these out I didn’t know mole was a show previously 🖤
Hockey
New follower here! I'm loving all you videos. Thank you for showing all the other colorways for the Noro yarn! I've been interested in looking up that yarn, just hadn't done it yet. I am working on the Pyramid Light Tee. A week or two ago, I went back and watched your progress videos on your test knit for it and realized I had been doing mine wrong! Somehow, I missed that the body was all knit stitches and had been purling the whole thing. I started over, and I'm just about back to where I was!
Valerie I’m glad I could help and I’m so happy that you are here 🖤
Pretty much anywhere! Train, planes, theatre, cinema, weddings, funerals, restaurants, cafes, waiting rooms and queues……you name it I’ve probably knit there! 😂😂😂
Work, 🚌 🚄
The Laurie sweater is very amazing and inspirational! I have the book and now will take another look and use some of my stash and left-over yarns!
Ok...I'm still watching but....DO NOT put it on hold! Finish the front/back and yes...jump to the sleeves and then Get It Done! I'm saying all of this in the most heartfelt way. Seriously, keep plugging away on it. It's going to be EVERYTHING!!!! When it's done.
My mother in law gave me the fair isle book for Christmas last year and I have never actually put it away because I use it so much! Love love LOVE the book.
Liz that’s great to hear that you use the book often it really is so full of good tips
Another great one!!!
Thanks for the fair isle book recommendation.. I’m adding that to my library !
Now I'm wanting some Noro yarn! I'm always tempted by knitalongs...yesterday one was announced by Lily Kate Makes. It's to knit any of her patterns, and there's a Slack group to join in with other knitters. I'm just swatching for her Underlace Top
Sandra that sounds so fun!!!!
Hey knitting bestie! I want to hear all about what you are working on! I feel so lucky we get to spend a little time together 🖤
Currently working on the Book Club by Sari. Knitting from stash so my gauge is denser and the fabric firmer than hers. I am enjoying the cables but not the feel of the yarn so am feeling a bit stuck with it and not so likely to pick it up for comfort. However, it is lovely once blocked. I did a mid project block and that gave me a boost but it is still slow going. Thinking I might plough on or I might hibernate it and knit something easier and more tactile for a bit. All to say it’s good to hear when others have similar roadblocks and how they navigate them. When we are working through those challenging WIPs, we are not alone🤗
What child doesn't love string?!? My granddaughters love making icord with this tool. They use the icord for belts and hair ties (for themselves and their dolls), tying surprises wrapped in cloth, and love asking Papa to be their horse. I'm sure your children will find many useful things to do with an icord.
I think the mods you did for the Albina, particularly stopping the stripes before the neckline shaping are very elegant. I think having the solid colour works really well on the dropped shoulder .
🖤thank you
the lantern moon cords work well with the Lykke needles and they are better cords
I like the last pattern you showed for the sienna orange yarn. The design on the yoke is gorgeous.
Your Albina looks perfect like better than store bought!
I’m blushing thank you so much
Your Albina is beautiful! Do you think the cotton lino would be a good choice for the Albina? I have yet to see or feel it in person, but it sounds lovely.
Vanessa I think the Albina could be very nice in the Cotton Lino.
Hi Laurel! Thanks so much for answering my question about colorwork knit flat. I haven’t cast on the shawl yet, but that’s probably a good thing because your advice made me realize I should do some practice swatching first. Wish me luck 😂. Your intarsia sweater is looking sooooo good. Intarsia kinda scares me but you make it look a lot more manageable than I have imagined. Thanks again for the advice and another interesting podcast! -Joanna
Joanna! You’ve got this if you’re feeling unsure or stuck message me on instagram and I’ll do my best to help 🖤
