Emily & Clark's Adventure

Emily & Clark's Adventure

Hi! We are Clark and Emily, living small and intentionally together (currently aboard our 50-year-old sailboat, S/V Temptress, which we fix and maintain ourselves). This is our adventure. Here we share monthly Aventure Logs, Intentional Life Philosophy, Capable Cruising Guides to help other boaters select equipment and supplies, and regular old moments in our life (including music, laundry, and the like).

    This is essentially an (over-priced) but simple programable switch, that connects (and disconnects) the two battery chemistries together in parallel. This will invalidate your battery warranty and shorten your battery life. Dont do it! Buy a proper dc to dc converter from a reputable manufacturer and save your self a lot of grief.

    Stephen, What is your agenda here? You keep publishing the same opinion in many places. Do you have some direct hatred? I again suggest you read Conrad's article linked to the bottom of this page www.emilyandclarksadventure.com/bbms as a start of your research on how LiFePO4 needs to be charged. Low current overcharge is proven to shorten the life of li batteries. There are over 600 happy users of this "simple switch" as you call it.

    Cheap and easy way ? Pwm controller with lithium support . Done . You connect it to your lead Battery. What u use for to start the engine . And set it on your Lithium. Switch to set it on or off . If you go full lithium than u use dc to dc converter. If you have low power alternator like a small one outside engine you can use a pwm .

    so crate of 10 for 250 is 25 usd each.. roughly.. not far off the price of a double sized air mattress. you can get a single air mattress at about 15 usd approx.. those are likely more durable though. another option is expanding spray foam. but it would not then deflate and would cost more.. this is effective and cheap. i cant fault it. beats buying a new boat.

    A couple at Ligui, a fishing village south of Loreto on the Sea of Cortez, had raised 6 kids aboard an ancient wooden Scandinavian double ender built in the late 1800's, referred to life after sailing as "going to land." She expended her energies inspiring sons & daughters of fishermen to get an education. Water is an issue along the Cortez, but if close enough to shore you could easily do a salt water well & R.O., solar of course, & Amazon is starting to make delivery reliable & affordable. Big Island is certainly the best of Hawaii

    Fascinating, i heard decades ago to nitrogen pack beans, rice, grains, flour for long term storage, basic idea- eliminate the oxygen. This demo makes CO2 the obvious choice. Did you try prefilling the bottle w/CO2 before loading w/ food? Certainly there would be displacement w/atmospheric air by some amount but seems like it'd work well. Thx

    Im a complete noob when it comes to vhf radio..hence me watching the video lol i was flipping through my owners manual and noticed my radio has a feature called "tri-watch" that scans multiple channels. Figured id set it to 16(emergency), and 68(general channel for recreational vessel communication) but not sure what weather channel i should be monitoring for my area...just up the coast from vancouver bc...from gibsons bc to Madeira park bc are the areas i fish

  • @EmilyAndClark
    @EmilyAndClark6 күн бұрын

    You don't set a watch on a weather channel. They transmit constantly and would make the other channels ineffective. Just listen to the strongest weather channel through one loop of its broadcast if that's the weather information you care to use. Then set up your watch.

  • @EmilyAndClark
    @EmilyAndClark7 күн бұрын

    Go to Conrad's article linked to the bottom of this www.emilyandclarksadventure.com/bbms It's a good place to start a deep dive. But in short you expose yourself to low current overcharge

  • @drpc98014

    @@EmilyAndClark never did find conrad's article. but no matter. So i got the new battery today and got it all wired up. at first it was charging up but then around 60% things started slowing down. btw the battery has bluetooth so i can monitor it. The bigger issue is once the battery reaches 65% it stops charging. I was hoping for 80-95 %. The tripp-lite inverter/charger only produces 13.42 v so my 100 ah battery only charges to 70 ah. gotta wonder what this does to its lifespan. anyway looks like i need to peek inside the inverter and see if charger voltage can be tweeked or replaced. . your mission Jim is to find a schematic.

  • @EmilyAndClark
    @EmilyAndClark6 күн бұрын

    Back to Conrad's article. Don't just let the battery cook at that voltage forever. That causes low current overcharge. Though it would likely take a while. I bet the battery is still taking charge but VERY slowly. So yes bring up the charge voltage to charge faster and make sure charge stops when it should and the battery isn't held at high float voltage. Or get a BankManager of course.

  • @drpc98014
    @drpc980146 күн бұрын

    @@EmilyAndClark yes i agree. 18 hrs later the battery is now fully charged at 100%. yet the problem (?) remains is how to automatically turn off the charging circuit once a full charge is reached. right now according to the blue tooth app the charge current is sitting at 0 amp so I'm guessing the BMS is doing what it's supposed to do. This is new territory for me so I'm not sure if this is an area of concern or not. I suppose I should simulate a power failure and see if I can draw up to eighty amps from the battery and see how the system performs.
