BACKGROUND:
I've developed a device that helps you add LiFePO4 batteries to your power system.
(www.emilyandclarksadventure.c...) Since I started selling them, I can't count how many people have asked me my opinion on what would be a good battery to buy. This series is my mission to find you the best, cheapest LiFePO4 battery out there right now.
THE BATTERY LEADERBOARD: Take a look at this link. It leads to a table of all the batteries we have reviewed, looking for that diamond in the rough. it also contains links to the very best price for each video, including hundreds of dollars off this one.

    Just started watching this battery series. I really like your leader board. On our boat we have Relion 300AHr batteries. I would love to see these in your testing series if it's not too late to include one. I will say they were also very expensive (over $2K each). I chose them because I felt at the time they were better than Battleborn. I did not do an in depth study like you are doing. Thanks again for doing these videos.

    It might be interesting to look inside a pricey battery. How these videos start for me is a battery manufacturer contacts me offering a battery. How they know to contact me is often a customer like you contacts them and suggests my channel. (Hint)

    Really like your enthusiasm. But the reason those other batterys have that empty space is to allow air to keep the batterys cool during warmer weather when maximum amperage load is applied. Cells that are close together under max. amp load generate excess heat, the biggest enemy of any battery. Also the maximum/minimum voltage tolerance when balancing cells is 0.05V. I saw one of your cells exceeded this valve. You should try static balancing this battery (which should bring this one cell in line) prior to putting this battery on operation. There is alot great information here, thank you and keep up the great work.

    Clark when adding batteries to your Boat/RV or house you want 4-8 banks to a busbar. You want 25% of load for each bank when its running at full load. Those are 100ah cells so at 25% its .25C. Heat loss doesn't happen unless you are in extreme hot areas. With inverters I always recommend 2-4 depending on power needed. You want each inverter to run between 25-50% of its rated power for continuous output. AS you know electronics do not like being run at max. Example: you boat pulls 5000 watts max ( 5000 watt inverter only does 4000 watts output) you get 2 of the 5000 watt inverters or 3-4 3000 watt inverters. Also start doing it right and go with 48 volt systems. you can start with 48 to 12 volt converters for windless/AC and heavy loads. When items start needing replaced get 48volt items like water maker, windless and AC systems. The wire size needed is 1/4 the size since amp draw(current) is 25% of what a 12 volt needs. I am saying I would get 4 200ah batteries instead of 2 400ah batteries. or 4 of those 400ah batteries.

    I think the SOK 200 is the best value at the moment. It has a heater that only works from the charging source and works to warm the battery before allowing charging. As a bonus for me it fits in my battery case, but has a metal case. There is a plastic case version, but its dimensions are outside the limits for my stowage. Doesn't get wet there anyway.

    I think it is cool that companies are coming to you to get you to review their batteries. Your reviews are great, thorough and testing what is actually important. You don't candy coat the criticisms while acknowledging what can be reasonably expected at a given price point. I think it is telling that a company is willing to submit their battery, it shows that 1) your tests are not unfair or unreasonable and 2) the companies that approach you (I realize that you buy many of them from amazon or wherever) have enough faith in their battery to subject them to your testing. I appreciate you doing these, and all your other informative videos. Really interesting and useful and I don't even own a boat (I do have a travel trailer).

    It’s a slippery slope. Nothing against the reviewer and I’m not claiming any deception. How can you be sure that the company sending their own battery didn’t cherry pick their best tested cells and do upgrades to the review sample?

    I had that concern at first. Honestly, I don't think they do. These come from the normal shipping depot. The people there just move boxes, they wouldn't know a good one from a bad one. And even the marketing person that contacts me just isn't that vested, they just want to get a review on KZread because someone told them to. With the exception of Elefast I'm not talking to an owner or anything. And Elefast just tells their shipping people to send me one. They have sent the wrong battery before.

    Once figuring out what your needs are, you're much better off getting one battery at the total ah you desire than you are with multiple lithium iron batteries that total your ah needs. This for a couple of reasons: Firstly, balancing the cells in one large battery is more successfully done and is managed better than is doing so across different batteries. Unlike lead -- a single larger lithium iron is better than multiple smaller ones at lower ah ratings. Replacing lithium iron batteries among a lithium "bank" would also be problematic due to mixing batteries of differing ages. Again, better having all of the cells in one basket (literally) and under one BMS. Secondly, the space needed for a single 300 or 400 ah battery is less (not always but usually) than putting multiple 100ah batteries in parallel -- especially given tie down requirements. Oh...and all of the cables needed to wire up those multiple 100 ah batteries in parallel affects how evenly they charge or discharge. Better to get one properly sized battery with some head room. I replaced 4, 100ah AGM (400ah total - 200ah usable) batteries weighing about 240lbs, with a single 300 ah lithium iron that is smaller, much lighter and that has 50% more usable capacity. A win/win/win. Ironically, the battery was less expensive than replacing the 4 agm batteries would have been.

  • @EmilyAndClark

    @EmilyAndClark

    9 ай бұрын

    Yep. My only comment is if you find you need more Li later and realize you shouldn't mix old and new batteries (or different batteries) you still can if you use a BankManager. Use two BankManagers one for the old bank and one for the new bank. Each BankManager will react to the needs of only the li under it's command. It's a way to add Li without having to toss your old batteries.

    i live in northern ca. about 200 miles east of sf. at about 1000ft. in the summer it can get up to 115F in the winter easily below 20F. but i am below the snow line. so a internal heater like you talk about here sounds great. the price hurts. but six - eight ( 36-48 volt) of them for my house looks good., This is a poor consertave county, so the state cuts off our power “ to save state power”.. so a back up is good to have. two of them in my rv would give me in effect unlimited 12 V dc power. run my fridge couple four days, maybe limited use of the micro?

    I use an AGM starter battery. Mostly for historical reasons but it still works so well I don't plan on changing it. Specifically I use "optima" batteries for this job, I don't know if that's available over there. It's in parallel to my starter battery using relatively small wire. As you plan on the bow. I like lead for heavy work like the windlass. I like Li for its efficiency in repeated cycles.
