    It’s also ok to be contradictory in your likes too. I can go from Nolan’s Batman to Zvyagintsev’s The Banishment. Depends on my mood and my mood swings like cul de sac in Moorpark CA. Sorry. Late to the event but your stuff is… timeless.

    I started off editing social media style videos, doing all the hyper edits and now I'm going into the cinematic film space. This video was such a change for me and I loved it! I'm tired of putting graphics and cutting so clinically to the beat, I've begun appreciating letting a scene breathe and giving it time to marinate more - I love the fact that more and more people are looking for a smoother experience with content and film now rather than just having all these hyper cut and sharp videos being churned out!

    I converted an old slide projector into a slide scanner, removed the condenser and replaced it with 3-4 mm opaque acrylic glass. I used a daylight LED panel in place of the halogen lamp, which is getting far too hot. All together fixed on a plate in front of the projector without a lens, the camera is mounted on a small scissor lift table with a macro rail. I found a small relay in the projector with a free contact that triggers the Canon camera via the remote control cable. When the projector is set to automatic, the setup shoots through magazines with 36 or 50 slides very quickly. For me, the setup was worthwhile because I used a lot of Kodachrome and Ektachrome film for years, back in the days of analog photography. The digital copies are excellent, which is why I framed one negative film to scan black and white. The result is also great, but it cuts my negatives into pieces and takes far too long. That's why I searched and came across your video. I think I will do it in a similar way to you. Unfortunately, I sold my Durst M601, for which I even had a repro arm, years ago. I think I will convert my drill stand. And finally, a tip for you: a mirror helps to align the optical axis at 90 degrees to the plate. Thank you and have a nice time.

  • @jessesenko
    @jessesenko6 күн бұрын

    Thank you Carsten! It seems you’re pretty handy in the workshop. I’ve seen setups similar to yours but instead to scan super8mm film frame by frame to get high res scans. They even hacked the trigger like you! I had a lot of people comment about the mirror trick… I had no idea. I have my grandma’s visor mirror from her old Renault within arms-reach of my setup now. One design I’ve been thinking of is mounting a 3/4” black pipe flange on the underside of my worktop and drilling a hole so I can thread in a 36” piece of pipe from the top (flange underneath keeps the worktop clearer) and then just use a mafer/super clamp with a ball head for scanning. And your macro rail to get fancy. Although, reference markings on the pipe once things are dialled in would help. Just an idea of a simpler way to do it without a copy stand. Although a bench top drill press is a great idea. Good luck with the build!

    I have to admit. I cut to the beat a lot, so this tip hurts a bit, I'm not gonna lie. But I also realise that my videos are different, even though my inspiration is in film, not gaming. Maybe I can get away with cutting to the beat because of my less hectic editing style, but I also run the risk of trailerfying my videos. Either way, great video and tips. Something to think about.

  • @jessesenko

    Thanks! Yeah just something to think about and be conscious of. Generally I’m speaking from a narrative film perspective, but I do like your term “trailerifying” I’ll steal that :)… not everything has to be hype all the time. It’s not my vibe generally.

    I’m a VFX artist for a living and my only rationale for wanting something shot 12k is for retention of detail in blue/green screen VFX plates and latitude for reframing in post.

  • @jessesenko

    That's what seems to be coming through. I've also heard vfx folks arguing that 12k is even a bit much to wrangle sometimes... but I have NO clue. Not my world, but would love to integrate more VFX into my work.

    Man. I’ve never not been sick of young men who claim to be “filmmakers.” I went to film school and I’ll be honest, it wasn’t all that great. What it did teach me is that there is a huge difference in actual filmmaking and content creation. Peter McKinnon and the whole lot have really fucked it for us. Orange and teal, cool transitions, speed ramping and drone footage creates this sense of pseudo emotional and quite vapid content. Cameras are getting so good, that it’s relatively easy to get a pretty shot but without the proper attention to detail, that’s all it is.

  • @jessesenko

    it's slick videography, not "filmmaking". Thanks for watching!

  • @Biosynchro

    I also wish that film producers would stop with the weird LUTs. Like dirty green or teal and orange. Colour theory is not an aesthetic, or an explanation, or a reason. Let the light do the talking. At least black and white is immune from LUT syphilis. Music has become pollution. Selective focus has become a thoughtless parody. 'Full frame' has become an obsession for people who either don't watch movies, or for people who pretend to understand optics. This video is an enema that was needed years ago. Thanks!
