Sergio Calvo Miniatures

Sergio Calvo Miniatures

Hello!
In case you don't know me, my name is Sergio Calvo and I've been a professional painter of miniatures for 15 years. During these last four years through Patreon's platform I have focused on teaching and spreading what my students call "capibases".

This is a very innovative painting method that displaces or replaces glazes by using almost waterless paint. I'm sure the latter has left you shock, so now you're more curious?

Besides, forget about thinking that painting is something difficult and that you can't get results in a short time, thanks to the new section of Painting With Vanessa, you will be able to learn from scratch under my careful supervision. Watch the first videos on our KZread channel to get an idea of how fun and fast learning can be.

My main objective is continue learning and improving my skills, showing you each step I get, from beginners to most advanced painters.

I usually paint warhammer 40k, boardgames and bigger minis like 75mm with NMM, OSL and more.

When you use the ink to glaze, do you water it down at all?

You make people want to paint, unlike others whose obsessive glaze makes you want to throw everything away. First of all, the technical preparation and the explanations you give are clear and come from a study behind you, a passion that goes beyond the result but focuses on the fun and the process of painting itself. The result comes later, and this is also a metaphor for your miniatures where from seemingly random brush strokes then light comes out. Thank you.

Is it weird that I kind of liked the mid stage before the airbrush? I liked the way that the very visible brush strokes covered up the natural highlights on the model so the model looked like a 2-d painting of a 3-d object. I also liked the way the flat black shadows looked, especially all the little ways that small amounts of that same black base coat peek out.

Not weird at all, every piece goes through different “phases” / maybe even styles? That, plus the matte black shadow seems to be just your personal taste. I like it too. Visible brush strokes plus dark matte shadows makes a great contrast and readability. Just natural for our eyes to like. Cheers

I think you could paint a masterpiece with a wet twig, and this too is an amazing job. I am not convinced about the behavior of the brush - it seems to have the same issues as other synthetic brushes like fraying on the tip, bristles not being uniform length, and splaying.

Check out the „apple glass button“ … was pretty much en vogue in the 2000 I think. This is a great way of doing shiny gems.
