Since, after the failure of the 1930, "The Big Trail", (which I liked), John Wayne was reduced to playing leads in "B" westerns, I doubt that he would turn down major roles in 1936's "The Plainsman" or 1939's "N.W.M.P."! Today, we think of Wayne always being the "superstar' that he became, but in the 30's, he definitely was 'second string' to 'stars' like Gary Cooper or Clark Gable, so picking him for parts, over them, is hard to believe!

I have 7 seasons of Gunsmoke, 6 seasons of Cheyenne, I have Have Gun Will Travel complete series, Sugarfoot complete series, 5 seasons of Wagon Train, Wanted Dead or Alive complete series, 12 seasons of Bonanza, Rawhide complete series. Not sure I could handle season 13 of Bonanza where Hoss died and season 14 without him.

What happen to Wayne's portrayal of Davy Crockett in the 1960 film, 'The Alamo' (Wayne also directed this film)....So tell me 'Pilgrim', what happen to this real life character that Wayne portrayed?

John Wayne comments: how about, Wayne's response to: "who are you?" - "Jacob McCandles" - "I thought you were dead!" - "That"ll be the day. " Another response was, "Not hardly." but I'm not sure which movie that was from.

John Wayne is America, he means the greatest of the American cinema, always the best. His best leading ladies were Maureen O'Hara, Ella Raines, Vera Miles.

Replace Angie Dickerson with Charlene Holt in El Dorado and I'll agree with your list, except I'm ambivalent about Marlene Dietrich. Never cared for her at all. Perhaps switch her out for Lauren Becall from Blood Alley and The Shootist.

Five offscreen or in the background deaths: - Noah's Ark (1928), he is an uncredited stuntman that dies during the flood sequence. - Hangman's House (1928), he plays two characters, one of which is possibly seen being executed by hanging. - The Deceiver (1931), John Wayne plays the dead body of a character that was played by a different actor while he was alive. - Sea Chase (1955), his character's fate is left ambiguous. - The Man Who Shot Liberty Vance (1962) begins at his character's funeral and then launches into a flashback, but his death is never shown. Nine onscreen deaths: - Central Airport (1933) in an uncredited role, he played a pilot who drowns while trying to save a drunk passenger. - West of the Divide (1934) In this film, John Wayne plays the roles of both Ted Hayden and Gat Ganns to make their resemblance uncanny. As Gat Ganns, John Wayne dies by drinking from a poisoned waterhole. - Reap the Wild Wind (1942) He plays a deep sea diver who is attacked and killed by a giant squid. - The Fighting Seabees (1944) He is shot by the Japanese and is killed in an explosion. - Wake of the Red Witch (1949) He is trapped in a ship while trying to salvage gold and dies when it sinks. - Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) Killed by a Japanese soldier. - The Alamo (1960) Playing Davy Crocket, he is fatally stabbed by a Mexican soldier but is killed when he tosses his torch into the gunpowder supply and killing himself and everyone around him. - The Cowboys (1972) Shot to death by Asa Watts played by Bruce Dern. - The Shootist (1976) Shot by a bartender in a saloon shootout.

I actually like it when John Wayne dies as it shows he is not invincible, but I am so happy when Vincent Price is able to make it through a film! I have seen at least 14 films so far where he doesn’t die! My favorite of Wayne’s death is in “The Cowboys”.
