    Looks good, but no real joinery here. Dovetail, fingerjoint, or even some contrasting splines would elevate the design and add durability. Still very pretty though.

    Nice job building your clock. I’ve done something in walnut accented with maple or birch dowels. Really looks great the pop against dark wood.

    I wanted to use brass but I couldn't think of a way to make a nice cut. Maybe I could use my wood lathe and hacksaw blade. But I like the maple walnut idea, even inverting it with a maple clocks and walnut dowels.

    He was using a block plane. It's a small low angle hand plane. A sheet of sandpaper on a flat surface can achieve the same thing

  • @heyimamaker
    @heyimamaker5 ай бұрын

    Yup, I was using a block plane. If you keep your eyes open you can find them used for a decent price. But sandpaper will also do the job if you can cut the wood thin enough, but this step isn't necessary.

    That herringbone wood pattern is all over the place in furniture shops in my area at the moment, how do you make that on your own? A pencilcase in that would look so nice!

    I made a couple of stars, guided by your video. Thanks! But my stars are a bit "loose" fitting. What can I do to tighten them up a bit without making it too difficult to put together?

  • @heyimamaker
    @heyimamaker5 ай бұрын

    You might need to adjust the angle cuts a little bit. I made a few using some scrap pine before I went for it with walnut. And the stars I made years ago do expand and contract with the humidity so during the winter mine are a lot looser than in the summer.

  • @heyimamaker

    You can use a cordless drill but the forstner bits grab when they are this big so make sure your holding the wood safe.

    What wood did you use? Does any type of wood work?

  • @heyimamaker
    @heyimamaker5 ай бұрын

    In the end it was Maple, I started off with Spruce but I learned that different waxes melt at different temperatures and different woods will wick the wax differently. The end result was natural bees wax and maple. Hope that helps!

    For future reference, if you make pencil lines across the joints during your dry fit (4:52), it will make lining the pieces up easier during the glue up which will help result in fewer corner alignment issues in the finished board.

  • @SomeDudeOnline
    @SomeDudeOnline8 ай бұрын

    If you ever get confident enough to try to make the pieces on the lathe, I would recommend the Yves Tanguy style as it's pretty minimalistic. I learned about the style from WoodYouMakeIt here on KZread and have been able to make a few sets in that style with my limited lathe skills.

    A healthy respect for the table saw is good, I use push sticks, blocks, or sleds with it's not safe. Otherwise there are situations where those devices can be a bigger liability.

    What wood do you find works best?

  • @heyimamaker
    @heyimamaker9 ай бұрын

    It really depends on the wax you use, Soy, Paraffin, and Bees Wax all melt and flow at different temperatures. I found that Maple worked best with this Beeswax.
