FINALLY! Finally someone talks about this. I have always loved the computer-like artstyle of this game, it is extremely creative and I always feel inspired by it.

SPM is my favorite, and it's my extremely firm belief that the game would be FAR better remembered if they simply weren't NAMED Paper Mario. While it is clearly part of the series, there's not a lick of paper in it. No origami, no folding around, turning pages or blowing panels like the paper games have. If people didn't automatically associate it with the turn based games, I think it'd be considerably more popular.

Great video! I need to replay SPM again. I remember also seeing the idea that the visuals could have some influence from flash games at the time, which just ties into your point about vector style graphics.

SPM's story is the best, but the gameplay is fairly painful at times. The main trouble is you have to use the sideways Wii controller that didn't have enough buttons. I recall how tiring it got to switch partners and pixls. I also remember Mario's 3D energy bar was always too short and I'd have to stand around a lot and wait for it to recharge.

@@lkjkhfggd pressing 1 and 2 at the same time actually opens the partner menu immediately, which the game unfortunately never explains. I do hate having to use the D-pad though for all the movement. I really wish a nunchuck were compatible with the game.

Honestly, the two big details that kept SPM from being a win in my book were: the removal of the turn-based combat and the lack of classic Mario enemies turned into sidekicks. I could’ve looked past one of those things, but both being present in the same game really bummed me out as someone who loved the first two Paper Mario games and bought SPM on release day. Now that time has passed I can look back and say that SPM was a lot better than I gave it credit for, especially compared to the Paper games that have come after it. It did a lot of things right, I just wanted more turn-based combat with action commands. The Mario & Luigi RPG games just don’t scratch the same itch.

I tried *really hard* to like this game back in 2007. I was super excited for it, and even though I was disappointed with many of the game's new aspects, I stuck with it for most of the game until one boss fight I just couldn't get past. That's when it clicked in my head that the game mechanics themselves were working against me. I couldn't move Mario to where I needed him to be in time or get him out of danger fast enough because for a platformer, the lateral movement is soooo sloooow. And this boss was fast and all over the place. It was horrendous. I have no lasting disdain for the kooky art style, or the story, or the characters. It was the gameplay that ruined the experience for me, the most important part to get right. But that's just my two cents

I just completed Super Paper Mario about three weeks ago. I loved it! Personally, I'm not a big RPG guy so I didn't miss the turn based combat (although I do want to play the original Paper Mario). Super Paper Mario is so expressive and (to me) felt very loved and very expressive. If my friends had played it I'd probably make references to it during casual conversation.

3:00 I loved SPM when I played it. And this minimalist style was probably the main reason. I was around 14 at that time. But I had one issue with it: It was way too short. I guess the main reason was, that there weren't repetetive RPG battles anymore. But I like some generic filler content to drag out the duration of a game. But another reason might have been that I was at an age, where I had more time and was smart. Before it took me months or years to beat a Nintendo game like the first two paper marios. I only played a few hours (up to 3?) per day, not even every day. And sometimes I got stuck and then stopped playing for weeks or months and played other games instead. Because I was smarter I didn't get stuck anymore, and it was holidays, I played half the day, so I finished the game in around a week. They had some filler content, like the two pits of trials, and the chapter 5 tournament challenge. But that's only the optional content. And it also didn't seem to have that much of it. There still was a bunch of optional content, but I found most of it pretty quickly, and I don't think I found everything, but I guess I found everything important.

I never really thought about the art style and everything being in a computer. That's cool! Although I think some of the reason this game gets disliked is from traditional RPG fans being disappointed that this game isn't a traditional RPG like the first two games. It's a platformer RPG. So if you don't like platformers then I can see why you wouldn't like it. I like both RPGs and platformers a lot, so I thought the game play was just fantastic myself.

Amazing video. That being said, as a dead god 2x player, having T lazarus as your favorite character is the most wild and frankly ridiculous take I have ever heard. Tainted lazarus is by far the worst character. t cain? boring but easily cheesable. t blue baby? annoying but poops are powerful. t eden? super annoying but at least its wacky which is somewhat fun. t jacob? dark esau does so much damage its actually p fun to use him and breezes through the early game. t laz has no redeeming qualiites and is an absolute slog to play. also t isaac is super overrated, all runs end up feeling the same and without birthright it actually feels so bad cuz you have no stats

That's actually such an interesting analysis, I never realized. But either way, Super Paper Mario will always be my favorite Paper Mario game regardless of its gameplay, because I play games for the story, and Super Paper Mario's story not only puts TTYD's story to shame in terms of depth, it's also the best, deepest story ever written for a Mario game. Nintendo should do this more often if they weren't so scared of experimenting with Mario. Also, Count Bleck is my second favorite character ever. I relate a lot to him and what he went through. I even used to think the same, that this world is awful and that it might be better if it just disappeared. But I learned a lot since then and managed to escape the awful life that led me to think like that. Mentally abusive parents, which Count Bleck seemingly also had from what we know of his father. It's crazy how realistic he is.

Considering the more meta take on Mario’s world this game presents (Things like the Underwhere and general acknowledgement at the video game nature by characters) it actually makes a lot of sense they’d go with this aesthetic come to think of it

And I always wondered what it exactly was that made me always love Paper Mario more than Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. But it's not only that, but also how the vibe from the first game feels like. Sure, it's simpler in story and everything, but it feels much more like a Mario game, if that makes sense.

@@Kirbyster I mean I also like that tbh Because it tries something new outside the typical Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser as the main villain stuff. That's what I appreciate this game and Super Paper Mario for. Deeper lore and bigger world building is always awesome and this is what I also wish for the mainline Mario games. I mean they added a lot of new worlds in the newer games but some things are still the same, like for example, simple plot and Bowser being the main villain. But yeah, sometimes TTYD feels like it tries so hard being different and even kinda edgy, that it feels out of place for a Mario game. Honestly, I'm also so disappointed that this game got remaked first before the original Paper Mario. I mean even Super Mario RPG got remaked, so why was Paper Mario 64 just skipped? Likely because there are somehow way more fans of TTYD. The remake of TTYD is a BIG improvement over the original one. So maybe it's worth for you to give that a try. But even then, personally I still love Paper Mario 64 a lot more. One thing I noticed after playing the remake is like you said, that the level and world design isn't as great as in Paper Mario 64.

What I like too about this overarching theme is that while it is definitely clear throughout the entire game, it's not treated so blatantly in the narrative (i.e. at no point does the game say that it takes place in a computer), which imo leaves it up for a more surreal, dreamlike interpretation because it's not entirely grounded/explained. It's an overarching stylistic motif that gives the overall narrative a unique flavor.

Super Paper Mario always had this digital feel to it. With lots of it’s music using 8 bit samples and some of the chapters using lots of geometric shapes and lines. Since this was the first Paper Mario game I played as a kid, I never understood why it was called Super *Paper* Mario since nothing looked paper-like in this game, yet more digital. But I think that charming aspect was what made it stand out for me as my favorite Paper Mario game.

i love super paper mario’s artstyle, if anything the gameplay is what holds it back from being so beloved in my eyes. the simplicity of the designs is great and characters like dimentio, mimi, the craggs and florians, and even a lot of the minor characters still stick out in my head and i can still list a good few things about them despite not having played the game in years. the gameplay was just too far gone from any paper mario game out there, the whole action platformer aspect was just very whatever and didn’t hold my attention nearly as much as the turn-based battles of many of the other games (aside from sticker star) have also NO super paper mario isn’t underrated do NOT be saying that like it didn’t sell a shit ton of copies

TBH, I like TTYD and SPM about the same. They are different games, and SPM is less RPG and more platformer. But both are great. I just wish the rest of the series was more like them in regard to telling a story and having depth for exploration and gameplay. They are certainly far better than Sticker Star or Origami King. I didn't play Sticker Star, but Origami King was actively unpleasant -- the circle-puzzle for combat was a terrible idea, use it a couple times, maybe at most make it the combat for a given area as part of its theme, but as the default gameplay for combat it was unbearably not-fun.
