That's Costner's son holding the letter. All his kids were in the movie. His oldest is the carrier they first meet on the trail after winter. I owned this on VHS. My buddy and I watched it a bunch. Never understood the hate. Everyone I know who's seen it likes it. But it's made so many lists of worst movies ever. Probably bc they love to hate on Costner. The best scene is when he knocks over the cigarette machine and says "I'm rich!"

The postman never wanted to be a hero. He just wanted to have his peace of mind, to not have to worry about anything but himself. Or, God forbid, to be changing history. But fate would have it otherwise. Unexpectedly, he became a symbol, a pioneer - the first to be looked up to by others (to his amazement and surprise). Although rather clumsily, he fulfilled this role. And that is the greatest strength of the story.

I think Kevin Costern used Adolf Hitler hope for German people in 20's and 30's. And he used Hitler to create a villain general Bethlehem (bad painter). Young Hitler was homeless for about 3 or 5 years. He never enrolled at the Academy of Arts. In the world war 1 he discovered that he spoke well, and spread his speech as if giving sweets to the Germans. At that time the German people where they were depressed and losing hope for life.
