Thank you Colonel.
Excuse me sir, I am a millennial and I enjoy basic land navigation. I believe you are talking about the generation after us millennials as we were born on the cusp of the advent of digital tools. We are the last generation to play outside. I can drive a stick, I can make a fire, I can find my way out of the woods with a compass and a map.
That's funny! That was one of my first videos. Since then a further generation may have been born. None-the-less I hope in gaming terms you get something out of these Nav tutorials. I'm guessing there are prolly a dozen or so now. Happy flying.
Merci 👍✌️
Mon plaisir, monsieur. If you have Flying Circus I have a complete series of How to Fly for ww1 aircraft. Easy concepts. Easier than learning to fly WW2 aircraft if you are new.

A ton more engine management videos to watch :)
This is diabolically difficult. The first and second turns as well as the climb to 500 have to be executed very quickly to be able to have the runway within 1km on the downwind leg to be able to see it at the end of your wingtip. Small question....if you're dropping the gear midway through the downwind leg does that mean that you're beginning to accept the loss of velocity and starting to drop from 500m (back down to 200m?), or do you maintain the 500m altitude until you make the next turn and idle the engine?
True, in difficulty it behaves like a real aircraft. Remain level on the downwind after you drop the gear as your speed bleeds off. Once you get to base leg then start your descent and use flaps as required. Lesson 3 covers the use of trim. Imperative after every aerodynamic change: gear down, flaps down etc. Otherwise you're fighting the pitch all the time. Suggestion: if you have a Bf=110 it is a far easier aircraft to land than the 109. Same engines, same technique. You may also be flying too tight a circuit which forces you to do things more quickly. Give yourself some room. Finally, I have a new How to Fly series out for WW1 Flying Circus. Far simpler to master, if you have FC.
@@colninny8769 Thank you for responding and thanks for the lessons ! It's getting much better with practice. I've been doing about 10 traffic patterns per day and I've gotten to the point where I can expect a successful landing on the runway each time. I'll take a look at the Flying Circus lessons although I'm not playing that game. I'm doing my learning on the Yak-1 and 99.9% of what you're teaching transfers perfectly to that plane. ============== Just for other new players, definitely keep the 500m altitude after dropping the gear otherwise you will have trouble spotting and lining up the runway after you make those final turns. You'll come in too low and too fast if you don't maintain the height for a while. Also you need to map your pitch trim to some easy to use buttons on your throttle or stick. You need to be able to trim quickly and not mess around with the keyboard.
Thank you Colonel.
And thank you, Ace

indeed, but I offer the general precession perception.
Just wanted to say thank you Col Ninny. I'm a flight sim novice and without this series of lessons, there is no way I would have been able to enjoy IL-2 at all. I really look forward to my hour or two of flying lessons every evening.
The best way to learn is actually online with a group. if you are interested and our time-zones fit you could fly with my group OPFR. We were all at your stage at one point! You and I could fly together and see where' you're at. Reply here if interested. cheers.
@@colninny8769 That's very generous. I would like that. I'm in the EST time zone but am pretty flexible with hours.
@@peterkossits4794 I'm on the West coast so I'm on PST. No problem. We just need to connect on Discord. That's the standard MP comms channel system. Can you dwnld Discord and then search for me and make a friend request. You could go to the official IL-2 webpage and find their discord link. Search for me there. ColNinny. Once friends I can invite you to OPFR server and we can go from there. If no joy come back here and we'll find a plan B.
Very helpful, thanks!

apart from the great tutorials ..your theme music is fantastic ..wonderful amp tone :) thanks for all you do
They say audio is the most important facet of a video:) Thank you
@@colninny8769 are you regular on combat box?im a newbie flying with DW right now .
The Pe-2 s35 DOES have RPM controls. Two little levers next to the supercharger control. If you want to look at a complete instructional video then see Requiem's channel: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dnh1l9uDqbi0n7g.htmlsi=zYVuLy4C1o5siyrP at around the 1.00 mark.
Noted, thank you. This video is concerned with managing engine temps.
Addendum: The Propellar control levers are there. They have no function in the game.
@@colninny8769 They do have funciton. You can adjust Prop RPM; i.e.constant speed 2600; 2450; etc.
@@Jbroker404 they don't work for me in the Pe-2
@@colninny8769 you might have to set RPM Control to a button in addition to the axis you already have.
This is what is wrong with this game in my opinion. One of my favorite games used to be Aces High II. It was realistic in that you carried certain amount of ammo and the plane's performance was effected by the load out and fuel level like it should be. You pushed the throttle forward and after taking off you pulled up the gear and you were off to fight and have fun. In this game and games like DCS you're not playing a game anymore, they turned it into a job where you are taking notes and studying more than you are actually just flying the plane looking for enemies to shoot at. If most of us wanted to have to learn all of this we'd go to flight school and become an actual pilot. This is supposed to be a game to play to escape reality for a while and just have fun, not a damned job.
That's arcade style play like War Thunder. IL-2 and DCS are Flight Simulations where the real world aircraft performance and characteristics and the pilot's abilities to manage them were a big factor. They weren't out there to have fun. That said, in IL-2 you can turn all those parameters off. Great for single player.
@@colninny8769but in il-2 can you turn that crap off in multiplayer online?
@@paulhunter1735it depends on the settings of the multiplayer server most require full engine management but there are a few with simplified controls. I totally disagree with your assessment. controlling the engine management is part of what makes the sim entertaining. And once you learn its not to hard.
@@paulhunter1735 Individual servers generally set the "techno chat" parameters. You will have limited success against any but the most novice players. Try Wings of Liberty or Berluga servers.
@@paulhunter1735 no, it's controlled by the server host. Look for Normal servers vs Expert servers
I had NO idea that gauge measured mixture. FINALLY someone mentions it! I wouldn't have even known how to google that question. Re question at 3:26 - water on the cooler side of good, and oil radiator could close just a smidge to bring the temp over 90.
Keep it simple. Temps vary in a climb, a decent, in cold or hot weather. Trick is simply to keep the temps within the prescribed norms. Keep an eye on them but better still, keep your eyeballs outside the cockpit as well!
Thank you Colonel.
as always. Thank you :)
What would happen with counter-rotating props ?
Thrust lines are different with counter-rotating props. They end up having less drag with more propwash over the control surfaces. IN wartime it creates an extra logistics issue meaning you had to supply left engines and right engines, not compatible. The p-38 has counter-rotating and is an awesome machine because of it.
Thanks for the Video Herr Oberst!! In the C47 I prefer to use the autopilot instead of the auto leveller. It's fun to use and a nice feature this unique plane offers 😃😃
Not sure the autopilot works when there was no way back then to locate a geographical point. No Inertial Nav, no gps. Never tried it. Interesting idea. Auto level would have been possible.
As a newcomer to the game, honestly your videos have been by and large the most useful. I've been so lost and overwhelmed as a combat sim newcomer, but your bite-sized guides have been a revelation. Absolutely criminal how you don't have more views!
Thank you, Silver. Much appreciate you taking the time to comment. Yes, the learning curve is great and at the highest level some of the top players are absolutely outstanding. But each one was in the same place as you feel you are in now. Tell you what, how would you like to fly together on a multiplayer server and I'll see where you're at? If you have the basics under control the best place to learn is with a sqn. Everyone is keen to teach and the game is so very much more fun when you work with others. Best to log into discord.com/ the main in game comms channel. Find me on the main IL-2 community discord, send me a friend request. We can go from there. Don't feel intimidated. If you really want to improve your skills and emersion dramatically... let me know! Cheers
I’ve found that I need the blip switch to land the camel, I can’t get the speed low enough to land without it and I just glide across the field. I also have difficulty set to “normal” rather than “expert,” so that might be part of my issue.
That is exactly how the blip switch was used. I never fly on normal mode, you may be right it might affect something. I'd just fly expert and learn the greater challenge
For reference, if you are in something like a camel and diving out of a fight, do not blip. You’ll be too slow from the blipping to be able to escape from an aircraft.
What HE said.... :)
FINALLY. I really needed this vid
Grin grin grin. Perfect timing she said :)
Have you ever had a job where you hang multiple spin blade underneath your helicopter to clear out sections of forest? I use to think it was just a cool James Bond movie prop until years I saw people doing it on KZread! Also, at the end of the video backpacking it out with the reminding gear. Thats a joke right? You don't leave all the left over items and then make the back for ages? The poor lads, they deserve a lift after their hard physical work!
No, there are far crazier, yet more innovative people than I out there.
The fact that a video like this is even necessary shows how lazy game developers are getting with this stuff. When I bought NWN2 in 2006 it came with a 120page manual explaining pretty much everything, nowadays you buy a game and you're lucky if there's a 3rd party wiki online about it.
Absolutely. Could not agree more.
Houthi rebels lmaooo. Thanks for the vids, so helpful.
I always like to keep up to date with current affairs :) Thanks for your comment.
Right now the links in the forum are broken, so this was very helful. Thanks!

@@colninny8769 Oh absolutely, I’ve mostly been playing the Flying Circus DLC though. Something more satisfying about WW1 dogfights to me
@@Falkriim Yes, WW1 dogfighting is in your face. I will be doing a series on the Dicta Boelke. The Ace's dogfighting concepts. But for now look at (13) FC Lesson -I think that's the air to air dogfighting one.
@@colninny8769 Ah thanks for the suggestion!
which one is best to buy for dog fights FC 1 or FC 2 ? can I buy FC2 without 1 ?
Sorry I cannot really answer that. Dogfights all depend on your opponents. Join a MP server and join up with a sqn. It makes it much more fun and your will learn a great deal from flying with experienced players. Entente GHQ, WB Clash of eagles, No 10/J18 Knights of the air, are all sqns to be found online. They can answer your question.
Thanks Col!
And did it work for you? :)

Hey man, I just asked a couple Chinese pilots n they said this is ALL wrong. If you wanna take it up with em they are called We Tu Lo and Sum Tin Wong
Arf Arf, you had me going there for a while :)
one advantage in flying missions in formations is that, if you keep a good eye on your friends, or have a situational awareness about where they are, you are less likely to mistaken friend for foe when you encounter the second mentioned. When they are spotted, you can easily orient yourself, and see - those are my friends, and those are foes.
Good comments. Thx
“We’re going to turn left across the town, and then shoot the living sh*t right out of that airfield..” You got a real life, out loud, chuckle there. Hi Col. Your vids are always so helpful I thought I would try writing you directly. Sorry for asking a total noob question, but others may have same two questions, so I will ask anyway. So, where do you get trim numbers for your dive speed? Trial and error? Second, I thought I remember seeing in other videos that, when diving in e.g. a dive bombing scenario, the plane gets trimmed as the dive starts into a slight (or pronounced?) nose up attitude to aid in pulling out of dive. Is this correct, or do you trim only as you start pulling out, or do you keep the trim neutral all the time, or what? Any help appreciated!!! And thanks for all the great vids!!!!
ahah- slight misunderstanding on the concept of trim. Try this: Trim control lesson 3: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pp5ok8SEhMuaY7A.html let me know how this works out for you.
we trim to hold the ac in a particular attitude.
The issue now is everyone is pulling so hard you cant afford to energy fight, the margins are too small. And then everyone's gotten so good at gunnery too, seeing 30mm 1km snipes left right and center. I personally don't have any issues, but I'm seeing a lot of newbies struggle in a very competitive meta for IL-2, DCS and WT.
it ain't easy for sure. sobering to think in real life, you only had ONE chance to get it right!
Hello Col Ninny. I have learned a lot from all your Flying Circus lessons. I am having a lot of problems keeping the plane steady while shooting, making it impossible impossible to hit anything. Maybee is my settings. Could you please do a video that will help me and others having the same problem to rectify the issue. Thanks
A problem well identified. Guess what - it's not your settings, its the way 100 year old machines flew. One of the reasons the aces said you need to get in so close you can't miss. If you fly the IL-2 BoS aircraft 30 years of technical improvements make aerial combat much easier. I will be doing a series on Dickta Bolke. The German ace's rules of engagement.
Thank you Colonel Ninny for your great lessons. Looking forward to new ones. I have trained ground combat based on your lessons 10, 12 and 13. The biggest difference that I noticed is that the nose of your plane remains steady while you are firing. Me on the other hand have even tried using both hands on the joystick to see if I can get the nose to not move so much but I am not able to. I will keep practicing. Will using track IR make it any better?
Why teach uncoordinated turns?
Good question. Because this is the first lesson. Turns are covered in the next lessons :)
