So what do you reckon you weigh now?
Loaded for a weekend’r camping trip and both of us in there, it’s right about 5600lbs... last we weighed a few months back. Lighter obviously day to day dry empty weight. Don’t have an exact weight at this point. Truck gets 17.5 mpg on average freeway mpg(2wd 32” E-rated tires at 55/60 psi -63mph is the sweet spot for mpg on my truck. ) thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
I’d like to build a camper for my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab , 6’ bed pickup. It would need to be a cab over. I’d install solar panels on the roof. It would have to be insulated for early spring through late fall camping fun. We live in north central Washington state up in the mountains and here at our house we get 5-7 feet of snow every winter, so in the areas that we enjoy camping are unavailable in the winter.
Sounds like a good project. I would suggest using an aluminum exterior skin since you’re in a much wetter climate than me. My wood is holding up well, but I’d be worried in the PNW wet. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
@@TravelingbyTacoma The Left side of Washington gets all of the rain. In our area we get normal rainfall in the spring and fall. No rain during the summer and a LOT of snow in the winter. Three years ago we had 2 feet of snow on the ground and a bad storm came in. We got an additional 3 feet in 10 hours. I felt so bad for my wife as I had shoulder surgery two weeks prior, so she had to get out and use our snow thrower to clear our driveway. There’s 9 families who live on our private road so thankfully Everyone was snowed in so there are 3 families who have a snow plow blade on their tractor’s, so they cleared our road to the county toad.
Clean install. I did something similar with a Viair 300P under the hood of my 4Runner. I wonder why you kept the alligator clips rather than wiring it to the battery?
Thanks. Yeah it’s still under there and working well. My model has a small LED light that’s on all the time when there’s power to the unit. Had to keep the clips rather than hard wire. Thanks for watching and commenting. ✌🏼
I grew up in central California before moving to Texas in 2005. I wish I'd explored more of this area in my 30+ years of calling California home.
It’s a great area for sure. It would take a lifetime to see it all on the 395. Thanks for watching and commenting. ✌🏼. TbT.
Build me one and I will buy it!!!!!!
Haha. Thanks for watching. ✌🏼
I am for real 💯🙏🙏🙏
@chrisspear1129 sorry, I don’t have the time and it would be too much labor cost to be a deal for you. It’s not a very hard build, but to make it worthy of selling… that amount of labor time charge for you would be too much money. You’d be better off buying a GGRSD or making it yourself. Materials are cheap, making it well (labor cost) is high. ✌🏼
Just found your channel, incredible build. Looking to see if you have a video discussing cost.
Thanks. The camper cost was right around 4k but that didn’t include the custom upholstery (bed and seat cushions) I had made. Those were 1k for all. So all in about 5k total. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT ✌🏼
Still have it there? How has it weathered?
It’s still there and still works perfectly fine. No issues. 👍🏼
Now that you have some experience with this camper have you thought about making a video discussing what you would do differently if you were to build another one?
I haven’t been filming much, just using the camper and having fun with it. I’m not very good at the whole KZreadr blog style videos lol. I may make one, but if you have any questions I’ll answer them. Things I’d do differently- make it a bit wider so it’s easier I take on and off and a little more room inside ( bed is plenty big for us -bigger than our rooftop tent was) but would be good to sit more comfortably inside when trapped by weather or mosquitoes. I figured out a way to raise it safely without the wedges if you’ve seen that process. I eliminated those and there’s a permanent x of webbing that stabilizes the roof on each side…way better and way faster. You can see them if you zoom in on my last insta post. Other than that it’s been rad. Paint is holding up great (boat bilge paint is pretty tough stuff) no leaks, no cracks and still get an avg of 17.5 mpg. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy 4th. ✌🏼
@@TravelingbyTacoma thanks for the quick response! Glad to hear you are enjoying it. Thanks also for answering my question of what you would do differently. Happy 4th!
A relay can help with switching the fridge to alternator power when car is on, and switch to lifep04 battery when car is off.
That would be cool. I just switch out the 12v plug from the truck to the house battery for now. Not much hassle and works well. With the solar panel on the roof we’ve never ran lower than 80% over several days. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT ✌🏼
Clever, obly thing if you close the wall while they are wet...
Yeah could be a little water if it pouring sideways, but we just wipe the walls down before we put it away if it’s light rain. Been fine so far. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
How did the paint hold up?
Paint it great. Boat paints are built to last. No issues at all with the gray bilge paint. Thanks for watching and commenting. ✌🏼. TbT
Inspiring idea!❤
I love the build . quick question how do you keep water from coming in under the top lid?
Thanks. It has several inches of overlap and sealed with this weather stripping link below. Works well, been in many storms over the last year. amzn.to/45yttrq.
I seen many awning diys but yours has the best details. So thank you. Im subscribing right now. Lol
Thanks. It’s still working well. Check out my insta if you want to see it in the wild from a few weeks back. Thanks for watching, commenting and the sub. ✌🏼
Great. Job
Thanks ✌🏼
Looks factory built, awesome job can't even tell that's plywood turned out sweet!
Thanks. Yeah, the marine sealer and the marine bilge paint is pretty good stuff. I used the premium top coat paint on my boat in the past (several years backs) and it’s still in excellent condition. It’s not cheap though. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Nice
Thanks 🤙🏼
Hey bud, where did you get the lifts to lift the camper up?

Awesome build!!!! Anyone ever told you, you sound like Tom Bodett? I keep waiting for you to say youll keep the light on 😅😂
Thanks. Haha no , but that’s pretty funny. I can hear that voice in my head lol. 😂 ✌🏼
Can you get into the gas tank?
Gas tank is under the truck and filler on the side. Not sure I follow your question.
I love that the compressor noise is in the same key as your bg music 😂 nice diy project and video. Thanks for sharing.
Haha, I’ll need to go back and check that out. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
@@TravelingbyTacoma For sure. It's right at the 10 minute mark ;)
MISFITS!!!
✌🏼
Hi Bud am from the UK 🇬🇧 my brother in law was going to have problems with the weight of his camper van so what he did was put on 3 tier Air bags to the back Axle one each side took the total weight he could carry by 1.5 tonne extra he did fit a line on the sides so he could top them up easily he said the stability of his vehicle is fantastic now holds bumps and corners great 👍 well done think I would make a front cone to make it more aerodynamic better gas mpg and less noise
Nice. My camper only weighs about 750lbs dry and fully loaded for a trip it’s still under GVRW for my model. I added new leafs springs, and sumo bumps ( airless airbags) along with E load tires. The truck holds the eight well and I still avg about 18 mpg. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
Love this and thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT ✌🏼
This has been a very interesting thread to follow. You are a master craftsman my friend. What was the end weight fully loaded out and how does the truck handle it ie does it make the truck feel too heavy or want to lay over real bad in curves. I can’t wait to see what your next project might be.
Thanks! The total weight when we’re fully loaded, both of us, water, food, gear, propane and fire pit and lots of beer for 3-4 day trip is right at the 5600 lbs GVRW for my SR5 model. Camper dry is about 750lbs- ish. I added heavy duty leafs, sumo spring bump stops and e load tires to hold the weight. It drives pretty good, you definitely can feel it, but, I still avg about 17.5 mpg for the last year it’s been on there. 63 mph is the sweet spot. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT. 🤙🏼
Hi buddy ..I'm almost watching every your video of building this Camper . How heavy on the end is your Camper .?? And Also , I can't find how and where you set the HEATING in the camper (which video ) Thx for everything and ready for starting doing my because I sale my Trailer - Hideout . I'm very good handyman.! I wish you good enjoyment in everything as well as nature. Huge LIKE & SUB's Greetings from Canada. 🤙🍺💕🍁🌿🍷👏
Thanks for watching. The camper is about 750lbs dry weight. I don’t have a heating system, we live in Southern California and don’t really need heating with the insulation. We use a heater buddy if it’s cold enough, but that’s almost way too hot. 🥵 Good luck. TbT.
@@TravelingbyTacoma Ok..thx Sorry I think you are little bit North ..ok.. Best regards to you and your family.! 👏🚚🌿🍁🍷🍺🤙

@@TravelingbyTacoma Ok.. Thx buddy ..no prob. enjoy your Camper. 🤙🍁🚚 🌿👏
Overall how much do you think a basic build like this woukd cost? I picked up a pretty sweet 1993 sunlite eagle buts its 8ft long and needs restored..alot of rot... want ine that will fit my short bed truck lol
My build was about $5k but that was with 1k worth of custom upholstery. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting. 🤙🏼
Fantastic detailing 😊
Thanks!
Really inspiring, thank you very much. Nice work 😊🇳🇴
Thanks for watching. TbT

NICE !!! I’d Love to have one for my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, long bed (6’).
Thanks for watching. ✌🏼
The first video I watched was your walk around of your truck where you raised the roof. The first thing I noticed was this tarp. Thanks for explaining it. I would have liked a more detailed explanation. Thanks.
Thanks for watching.
Nicely done, I really appreciate you sharing your kindness and knowledge.
Thanks. Thanks for watching and commenting. ✌🏼
Came out great! 10/10 video & idea
Thanks. ✌🏼
Excelente
Thanks!
Good for you man! I really appreciate the attention to detail.
Thanks!
A lot of thought went into the design and it ended up beautiful. The brackets are so secure. The sliders will ease dismounting and mounting.
Thanks. It’s working well. 🤙🏼
Is that insulation good for reducing some sound outside? Just curious cause i hear people sometimes have too much noise, mostly in van builds.
It’s great. Works well stays cool and warm when needed and most importantly it’s way quieter when there is wind than our old RTT.
@@TravelingbyTacoma Very useful information. Thanks so much for writing back!
Custom door with custom lock is nice! Maybe I'll do something like this if I get the chance.
Thanks!
Nice work on the shell. i hate the interior build out.
Haha. Good I didn’t build it for you then 😂✌🏼. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
It’s great to see you enjoying your creation after all of the effort you put into it! Thanks for making this video series. It has been fun to watch and a great place to come for ideas. Happy trails.
We’re enjoying it. Thanks for watching and commenting, it is appreciated. ✌🏼TbT.
What was your gas milage prior to putting on the camper? Thanks-great job!
Thanks. I was right around 20mph freeway and 18 in town. Now I’m about 18 highway and 16 city. I drive 60-63 mph always too. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT.
this is so cool, thank you !
Thanks and thanks for watching and commenting. TbT ✌🏼
What kind and size nails are you using in your nail gun? Awesome videos btw watching them to get ideas and this is one of the best builds I’ve seen
Here's a link to the nails I used. amzn.to/437ruYP They are not really structural, just used them to hold everything in place before I added the screws. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting. I'm glad you're liking them and getting inspiration from them. TbT
If I’m interested in saving up to build one what would you estimate price of materials to be? Thanks!
The goal cost for me was about $5k, but that included custom made upholstery that was about $1100. I tried using as much aluminum of the remnant pile from my metal supply (way less money) and most of the internal build was reclaimed wood. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
Is that hard to setup during rain or snow???
Not really harder, just need to be a little quicker if it is pouring rain. We’re just weekend warriors and vacation campers not full time so we try to plan our trips around good weather. Been in the rain a few times in Oregon though and not that big of an issue. Thanks for watching and commenting. TbT
So nice your campervan. May i know how weight is it?
Thanks. It weighs about 750lbs. One of the build videos in the series goes over the weight. Thanks for watching. TbT
This looks like a great setup..How good will it stand up to extreme cold?
Thanks, we live in Southern California, so extreme cold isn’t really an issue, but I can tell you it’s a hell of a lot warmer and quieter than a rooftop tent. We spent many cold-ish nights in our RTT. Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s appreciated. TBT.
Such a nice built truck camper! If I hadn’t known I would’ve sworn it was a manufactured one! I’m planning on buying a Northstar 850 SC soon to go onto a 2024 GMC 2500 HD 4WD CREWCAB 6.6 LITRE DURAMAX DIESEL AT4. Happy trails and safe travels! ~Jim~ (Houston,Tx)
Thanks! That’s gonna be a beast of a rig. Sounds like fun. We just got back from Texas (first time for me ) we went to the Hill Country-Boerne, Lukenbach, etc. Beautiful area this time of year. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🤙🏼
