As a big family guy. Skinamarink made me genuinely tear up listening to the kid cry… I can watch as many random slashers I want and it doesn’t really do anything to me (maybe I’m wack) but bro hearing a kid cry while not having anyone to defend them is literally devastating to me

I always thought that with a little bit of editing, they should have started the movie Parasite with the "ghost" scene. Yes, it has an element of horror that I could easily see freaking someone out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2ycuKqdoreXfMo.html

One of the creepiest and most fascinating horror films is Vampyr (1932). It's very surreal and feels like some arcane creation, as though you've stumbled across the real tape from The Ring.

Some prefer the back row so there is nobody behind them. It can make you annoyed or anxious hearing people behind you. Also nobody can put their feet against the back of your seat there. I agree that it is way too far away from the screen in big theaters though.

The only movie that really creeped me out was "the entity" (1982). The idea of being invaded like that and being so absolutely powerless to stop it or fight it. The ambient noise/soundtrack that went with it scared me too. First time a movie ever made me scared of going to sleep that night 😂

Immediately going in to mentioning which movies you believe do or do not deserve to be on the list is very telling of how limiting and reductive a list like this inherently is.

I watched Lake Mungo for the first time last year and it made me feel like a kid watching a horror movie for the first time. Absolute nightmare imagery, and incredibly sad as well. The mockumentary style really contributes to the scares as well.

Kairo (2001) has the most bone chilling scene I've ever seen in my life IYKYK. The are other very scary scenes in it and it's generally a great movie (tho I didn't like the ending very much)

I would maybe say "The Mist" (2007) - did not fuck me up personally aaaand I had the ending spoiled for me years earlier but I can absolutely see this being someone's nightmare film. It's just so fucking grim haha

The original ring is far scarier than the remake. Skinamarink isn’t scary, it’s a bunch of other things, but not scary. Funny Games is a cheap A Clockwork Orange and isn’t scary, just unpleasant. Old has a few chills here and there. Texas Chain Saw is the only one that absolutely belongs on the list.

There are no generally scary movies. Theres only entertaining movies. I love horror for the ride, special kill FX and the occasional really well done jump scare. But I've personally never been scared watching any movie ever.

What does "Scary" even mean? That's the first question I ask someone when they tell me they want to see a scary movie. Disturbing imagery for example will make you think about it even after the movie is done, but that's just in your mind, it's "implied horror". Others, instead of dark figures and long hallways, get scared when they see disturbing "body horror" imagery. Some even get scared by jumpscares, as in, even after the scare is over they still feel the dread, however the majority of people just laugh off jumpscares after the scare is done. I find most people (especially general audiences) think a "scary" movie, is just a jumpscared filled movie but at the end of the day, jumpscares, even for the general audiences, just don't get you that "scariness" you are seeking, so they just blame the movie for "not being scary enough". That's the thing though, it isn't scary....for you, because it wasn't ment to scare you. We fear different things the same way we find different things funny. To sum up: ask that annoying friend of yours if a jumpscare is scary for them, if they say no, just show them a movie filled with build up but no execution, they won't annoy you anymore (I speak from experience).
