Great tips once again. The work it takes to find our subjects and capture their image is the hard part. The simple joy of seeing our success after a hard day out is one of the best feelings. Can't stress enough how important it is to have a good bird app for migration of birds, for the two I use hadn't said anything about the ibis being in the area. Sadly I caught them at the end of their migration. Bless you Brother and keep sharing your adventures

The 100-400 is $649. The 100-500 is $2699 (current discount at B&H). I use both the R5 and R6. The 100-500 is a little sharper, a 1/2 stop faster, obviously longer, and it's better weather sealed. But it's hard to justify that price.
