    What really bites about HL:A is that the rest of the Half-Life series is pretty easy to experience. HL1 and 2 are pretty cheap on Steam, I think they are both $10 usually and go on sale for even less, and being older games, they can probably run pretty smoothly on most hardware. So it's like, you can play the whole series (except for Decay, which you'd need to do some cumbersome stuff to experience as the devs intended, but that was always meant to be a PS2 bonus thing) for >$40 total on decade-old home computers but in order to experience this critical new turn in the story in the way it was built for, you need to shell out like $900. And that's not even accounting for the physical barriers people might have keeping them from VR, like visual disabilities/impairments or just getting so nauseous in VR that they can't enjoy it. As psyched as I was to see a series I like finally coming back after a 13-ish year cliffhanger... I really hope that the next installment in the story of Half-Life will be told on a more affordable and accessible platform. Also... I wish more libraries had games and consoles. I know a lot do, but in my experience it's been pretty limited.

    I gotta say, my feelings about this game have always been, "well, a lot of people really hate it so it's gotta be something right." After watching this video, I don't think this game's really for me because I don't really like stories where _everyone_ sucks, but I have way more respect for it. Hearing that the lead creator was doxxed and isn't present on the internet anymore was fucking devastating. I wish people could just let others create extremely dark and uncomfortable things without flying off the handle. I wish people could just sit with their discomfort and try to understand it rather than assuming that the thing that triggered it must be heinous. Thank you for this video. Also man that Kotaku Australia article... the headline seemed to suggest to me a kind of disgusted enthusiasm, like, "wow this game is so fucked up... AND I LOVE IT!" and I'm really disappointed to see that the author is just pearl-clutching.

    While this is a four year old video, I do want to give my personal two cents. A lot of this video is a very logical argument, and one that works perfectly for the analogy of Madoka & capitalism. The thing that strikes me however is I don't think Homura was doing this to save magical girls, she was doing this for Madoka and Madoka alone. While she did oppose the Incubators actions, she didn't do it because it would damn other magical girls (after all, we know how much she cares about Sayaka living or dying). Rather she does it because it would undermine Madokas sacrifice. One big moment to me is Maoka's reassurance that she wouldn't have done what she did if she had the choice. The big asterisk of that scene is that this is _Homuras_ Labyrinth, meaning that even if unconsciously, she has an effect on the things inside, Madoka included. This isn't to say it's fully incorrect, but rather that in this moment, Homura is hearing what she wants to hear. She wants to be told Madoka wouldn't leave her unless forced. I believe Homuras actions were entirely selfish... but that in that selfishness, she tore down a system that would have been much worse off in the long term if she hadn't. Either way, stellar video! Great AMV at the end too!

  • @joycestick
    @joycestickАй бұрын

    We could've done more to underline that Homura's actions were almost entirely selfish even if they may have happened to benefit others and that her solution was imperfect even if preferable.

    I'm playing the game right now and the reaction to it on the internet is soo exaggerated. It's a funny little edgelord game with great character work. IMO it's best understood as a character piece and possibly a power fantasy (as many people have loved the parent killing scene) If I were to take it more as a commentary on capitalism I'd hold it in higher standards. For example I didn't even realize the setup is in reference to the Flint water crisis, which is an example of environmental racism. Divorcing it from that context in a game where the art style itself kinda excludes black people is very 'wouldn't it be fucked up if this happened to white people' It's a great game if the humor and characters appeal to you. if not, then not, but it doesn't even have particularly disturbing content. if you enjoy horror at all you see and read way worse all the time. thank you for your review

    Comment's coming a little late, but I wanted to share. Even if we look past that this game was illustrating an obviously undesirable parental situation and that the parents are vile and abusive to their own children which was what brought the world a whole host of troubles, I genuinely think human sexuality is beautiful *because* it is so fucked up. That in all of those books on sexuality written by Freud, or Wilhelm Reich, or Alan Watts, or Masoch, or De Sade, or the great many works in myth, poetry, music, comics, and internet culture, we do see great truths of what it is that is lurking inside all of us and how scary it can be. There are many cultures and societies today that seek to restrict and oppress the id, and its innocent, childlike cravings to pursue sensual pleasure in all of its forms, which I really do think is the biggest gift given to us by life, and to be enjoyed alongside with our gifted intelligence and morality. Denying that these shadows exist in all of us is inherently puritan and authoritarian(even fascist) by its spirit, and denying the way fantasies are nourishing and give us a better insight into the things we're lacking or unspoken emotions is another way to fashion people as a tool and a means for an oppressive power. I understand that it takes courage to face how scary and ugly the shadowy parts of sexuality can be, but it isn't ugly because it is evil, but because it is innocent, and so ready to grow and connect with you and with other people. One should be happy that, even if you absorb the shadow in your own makeup, and you let yourself enjoy its pleasures and catharsis and allow it to connect you to the world and people at large, you should still feel triumphant that even after relishing with it, you choose to live and act in kindness to yourself and to other people. Embrace your shadow.

    This is sort of an addendum to my earlier comment. I looked through the live chat’s reactions to the premiere and like the idea of “personal canon” or I guess “headcanon.” I choose to believe that there are branching timelines with a split between the “Ideal Ending” and the so-called “True Ending.” In an alternate universe, Ren graciously accepts the offer and he lives happily with the rest of them forevermore. I choose to believe that somewhere out there, there is a Ren who unapologetically made that choice. It’s what brings me some peace after this disastrous conclusion to a game I once adored deeply.

    Thank you for making this. This articulates a lot of the issues I had with the Third Semester. As someone who would accept Maruki’s reality, I’ve become increasingly disillusioned with P5R overtime. I think our heroes fail to understand that there are millions of people around the world who will never be able to overcome their trauma at all, and though Maruki isn’t perfect, this reality would be a haven for people like them. The Thieves themselves only got so far because of the Metaverse; without it, they would be among those who would greatly benefit from Maruki’s care. Also, I don’t subscribe to the notion that a life without suffering and/or growth is meaningless. You can still grow without having to suffer at all, and be happy without suffering as well. Thus, I don’t think all this talk about stagnation really matters all that much. Heck, the cast is still attending Shujin and/or moving on with their lives in the Actualization Ending. I did nothing to earn the birthday gifts I’ve received, yet I am still happy to have them all the same. There’s a quote from philosopher Alan Watts that encapsulates how I feel about this: “The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” So many people say people like us are “missing the point” or “not understanding the game’s message,” but that’s really not the case. I understand what the game is trying to convey, I just strongly disagree with it. You can understand a story’s themes without having to agree with them yourself. I think more people need to be aware of that. I always try to be respectful, but it’s a little difficult for me to take their words seriously if they cannot even acknowledge that we have differing perspectives. Nonetheless, the Thieves have sadly fallen out of my favor after this. I’m not sure when I’ll return to this game, if at all. It hurts, especially after I was so excited to get it after getting introduced via seeing a Let’s Play of the vanilla game from a favorite KZreadr. After finishing, I even went back to an earlier save file and said yes to Maruki so he could have the last laugh in a sense. In trying to deliver a story about accepting reality and moving forward, the game conveniently tiptoes over so much else, and leaves many people behind in its efforts to blaze ahead. If I ever do replay this, I’ll just go for the vanilla ending instead. I still think it’s a great game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just not for me, I suppose. Again, kudos to you for this. Hope you’re doing well.

    I don't like how there is so many people that go against the game for one scene that doesn't even truly happen, I'm sure this interactions wouldn't even happen in the game anyway later on, rather the scene was shown or not, but the fact our host here even says they have done many MORE arguably WORSE things, shows that people do not have the knowledge to understand what is worse than what, do not know the effect they have on other's lives when they say or do what they do, until it finally eventually happens to them. It's unfair. Especially to the creator, and the actions people took against them or their close ones... it just reminds me, in 2 or 3 generations, maybe even this newest generation, will turn the world into the exact world we see in the game.

    Content warning for heterosexuality is why I stick around. Love it when creators get it. On another note, some theories of art say that art exists to teach people about themselves. I've really wanted to speak with someone who had a visceral reaction to Andy and Leyley and ask them if maybe it gave them some insight into themselves they didn't like. Unfortunately, the people I know who played it love it.

    I dont think you get it, the thing with Maruki is he put a bandaid on a wound and in his reality that bandaid would never be ripped of, thus deleting any growth that came from any trauma that any people in Japan had. The Phantom Thieves chose that because they wanted to aquire their freedom, not have it served to them on a silver platter. I take The Phantom Theives as helpers. They are there to help. I also believe thats hammered in in Strikers in the 4th or so jail. They help the person overcome her trauma, not solve in the snap of finger. Please absolutely destroy me if i was wrong with this comment. But i believe the endings are on personal belief.

  • @joycestick
    @joycestick4 ай бұрын

    I mean yes sure totally I did say that Maruki's solution sucked and sure the Phantom Thieves should have a better one, but the game doesn't show them doing any of that. They just rip the bandaid off, and then they don't really do anything about the bleeding, as far as I can see. Then again, it has been a few years since this video, and we have heard a few interesting different takes. So, maybe there's something we missed. But honestly, I highly doubt that my opinion would change, at all, if we went back to it again.

    Great video! Enjoyed it a lot. Was kinda surprised, since very rarely when actual analysis of this game is done, it seems to focus on codependency, and this video also focused on the theme of neglect, that I didn’t even consider till now. So kinda cool perspective. Especially since the two seem to fit so well together. It’s also a bit weird to me how the game praised by almost everyone that played it still got controversial to the point that the controversy is discussed more than the game itself. But I guess most truly controversial works are that way.

    Really good video, I haven't played this game yet but I've been on its side, generally more on its right to exist but its nice to actually hear someone tackle and discuss the things its saying instead of discoursing around it on either side. It made me realize that even being supportive of it I still had done a disservice, or have been done a disservice by others, since I'd never heard anything about the actual story within. The whole closing point at the end really resonated, its honestly embarrassing how most mainstream publications aren't even capable of discussing and looking at media like this critically, let alone people in general. Its so much more freeing, enriching, and actually helpful to talk about these things than just our disgust (or lack thereof) of their existence. I've come to so greatly value all the weirdos, freaks and no-name KZread uwu girls who delve into works like this earnestly, without endless qualifiers or signaling disgust and disapproval at every turn. Thank you! Also as a side note: I really appreciate the tumblr transcript! Halfway through the video I couldn't listen for reasons but then realized I could just read the rest and even retain it better that way. I did go back to listen to the rest when I could, I just now I wish more youtubers would do this, having the option is nice!
