It’s so bizarre. Aya and Yatsumura were both so distinct and didn’t NEED to be related. It served no purpose, not narratively or symbolically, and only served to ruin what could have been an interesting romantic angle. Like, the reveal that they are sisters is meant to be part of how they are the kids of characters from the mangaka’s previous work Magical Girl Apocalypse, but only Aya really had to be their kid. Yatsumura did not - nothing about her character would change if she was not related to Aya.

Wanna know the WORST thing about 38:50? Even after rationalizing Kaname’s abusiveness (having been emotionally abused by my dad: yikes), it STILL had potential to be a fantastic scene, *all it needs is one more page*. Imagine Aya saying this: “I’ll protect you Kaname. Because you’re my brother… and because you’re too much of a coward to protect yourself. You see, I’ve realized something since becoming a magical girl: you don’t stop feeling weak when you gain power. Dad beat mom and you because he felt weak. He hid from that feeling by abusing his own family. It didn’t help him, did it? If it had, he would’ve stopped, but he kept hurting us. He wasted time being mean instead of fixing his problems. Our Dad was an idiot. And you are, too, because you do the same damn thing! I put up with your shit, Kaname, because I didn’t stand a chance. I didn’t want to lose the only family I had, as bad as it was, because I didn’t want to feel even more alone than I already did. So I accepted my role as your emotional toilet. But you? You were older and stronger than me. Dad cared about your future. *You actually stood a chance*. And instead of facing your problem, you tortured me, so you could enjoy a few short moments pretending you didn’t feel powerless, pushing those powerless feelings onto your little sister. And yet, there’s one thing I’d like to thank you for. I learned something important from the hell you put me through. The kind of person who hurts others to cope with her own pain… the kind of person who’s willing to betray her family, to use and abuse those closest to her then leave them to rot when she’s through with them… *that’s not who I want to be*. I don’t want to be anyone’s chew toy anymore, but I don’t have to follow in your footsteps, either. So don’t worry, Kaname. I’ll protect you. I will always, always protect you… not because you deserve it, but *because I refuse to stoop to your level*”

this story makes me so mad cuz the good is so good but the bad is so bad and the main feeling is mid mid mid LOL, but i love Aya and Tsuyunos relationship not only is it just cute and gay, but it captures that feeling of being depressed still but smiling and being happy on some level, caring about getting better cuz your with someone you love, that feeling when after being in a dark place for a long time you finally want to live, and there's so much you want to do and see and experience, that feeling of relief after years of pain, like starting hrt, getting out of abuse, or as it is in the show meeting someone you love who genuinely loves you to and stands up for you like no one else did before, its so good an unique to this show, but then its just surounded by wack shit. also can we NOT have the 14 yo who looks at oldest 11 having magic panties and pantie shots and all that sus stuff? i mean really none of these characters should have that stuff going on there all to young but jegus that is a child

Very glad to have stumbled upon this, this is an excellent essay and you're really engaging to listen to. I enjoyed the anime for Magical Girl Site. Yeah the first episode was hard to get through and at times it did feel like some of the abuse was being fetishized, but I liked the characters, the story kept me hooked and the final conflict felt satisfying. I did start reading the manga up to volume 7 but ended up dropping it, I didn't feel as invested as I did with the anime and just wasn't bothered about finishing it. After everything you've just described I think that was a smart decision because WOW! I cannot believe how crazy the story ended up being, and I'm absolutely horrified by the resolution with Aya's brother. Definitely think sticking to the anime is the best call (though I would have liked to see Aya and Tsuyono's date animated - the kiss was so cute!). Fantastic video, will definitely be checking out the rest of your channel.

Cool video! I think you do touch on the core thing with Site, which surprisingly isn't the content as much as it is the framing of the content. Everything I saw when watching the first two episodes led me to read the show as fetishizing the suffering, and I don't think I'm the minority in that reading. So that makes it really hard to also take it as dramatic setup for the growth of the friendships and the girls overcoming. I'd actually heard a couple people say that there is something valuable, meaningful and traditionally magical girly about this show if you stick it out. But unlike something like Madoka, the horrors if the circumstances and the contextualization of what's happening just isn't used or portrayed with the skill it would need to function fully as plot construct. Instead of leading you to the monkey enclosure and then Surprise! they fling poo at you, Site comes off as dropping you in the septic tank and taking pleasure as you drown.

That description of the first episode reminded me a lot of Goblin Slayer which I'd say suffers from the same edgelord shock marketing issue in similar ways. Episode one is not NOT Goblin Slayer but it's a particular unkind slice of it that seems to have been geared towards generating noise from controversy and shock value. And that IS a bit sad because Goblin Slayer is pretty great and I DO feel it says some interesting stuff even through how it portrays its violence. Could not get past Magical Girl Site episode 1 though. That was way too much for me back when I gave it a watch. It seemed to fetishise and revel on the violence in a level that was too disturbing Edit: Finished the video and... dodged a bullet here for sure, lol. The anime vs manga dichotomy also made me think of Claymore. Where the anime made some weird changes in the ending but where the manga went AFTER that bit.... oh boy, rolled all the way downhill. As for not drawing any big sweeping conclusion and whatnot... I don't know. I think you're worrying too much about that. It is very much possible to just talk about what a piece of art tried to say, ended up saying, how it ended up going about it and how you felt about it without needing to tie it up in some life revelation or whatnot. The journey is also interesting (don't get me started on how Breath of Fire 4 had a good premise which it completely failed to support)

Having seen the range of reactions to the show around when it came out, I was initially surprised at how the show had a decent cult following of people who saw an earnest sentiment of solidarity in it. While it sucks that the manga muddles that sense of sincerity (I laughed out loud when you revealed the clones plotline), seeing that the anime adaptation seemingly deliberately took liberties to forefront a more empathetic portrayal of its characters made me curious about the staff behind it. Surprisingly, the person credited for series composition, Takayo Ikami, also debuted as series composition on Mawaru Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi with Kunihiko Ikuhara as director and co-writer, so make of that what you will.

As someone who had watched this anime once and just stopped mid way because they got overwhelmed, I have to say, 15 minutes in and I'm already so impressed with your opinions about it and honestly I can't help but sympathize with your view not only of the show but also the sort of weird comfort it brings. I have to be honest, I've forgotten about most of the show and only remembered the awful parts, but after some consideration I do remember enjoying the sense of solidarity of these characters, hell I've even empathized with their suffering, seeing you talk about it has made me reconsider how I view this show and consider a rewatch with an more open mind, and for that I'm really grateful!

What I like about this show is that even though it comes off as glorrifying and excessively cruel just because, I think that's exactly the point. It feels like a test wherein you are challenged to look past the ugly side, even if it makes you feel cringed or uncomfortable by it's sheer openness and even stupidity. For that test, it perhaps has to be unrealistic to some degree. But by that line, I wish it would've fleshed exactly that out more. They would've either had to make it super realistic and non-dissociative, or make it ultra or atleast accompanied by a touch of traumatic and absurd dissociation. Anyways, once the test has been passed and we accustom to the climate of it and dig a little deeper through the, well, 'shit', we would find some quite beautiful, relatable and even real components. As said, the rage and pure emotionality and even stupidity of the girls is in itself wonderful. Even though I wish it captured more complexity and (philosophical) reality of the way characters think, it is symbolically comforting to me. I really like the base they were playing on, even if it wasn't perfect or something I could easily call 'good'. But some parts just terribly hit me to the core, so kind of like a long book with few hidden gems and aid for nostalgia, I love it. This scene 14:43: The usage of their magic as chipping away at their soul is an element also used in Madoka Magica, and it symbolizes the same thing for me. Especially here she plays on the idea that in despair, you will try to go up against it desperately and try to beat it, but the more you do, the more your soul suffers from it. But the realization that it's also not possible to just stop, as if you're just stuck on this single-lined path and have to keep going...

I feel like Madoka Magica including the grief seeds to prolong the inevitable helped a lot from a writing perspective too as well as the concept of witches. Plus I’m pretty sure the soul gems could darken by just falling into complete despair. And the only way to kill a magical girl is through destroying her soul gem… it added a lot more to the system. Also may I mention the wish thing? Magical Girls are born from hope that through the choices of the girl will either dwindle to despair or they’ll just die. There’s really nothing like that in magical girl site. They’re just given the sticks to kinda do as they pleased… Madoka Magica is about hope, despair and the consequences of your actions.

To the where magical girls come from twist, could it have been something like, girl had the worst life, ever, but some sort of God figure idk found it amusing or something? I'm leterly coming up with this as I'm typing. So he gave her power, which she used to continue magical girls and stuff, cause she wanted to give power to those in simaler situations. But, seeing the violence they've been inflicting on each other, she looses hope that she's helping anyone. Vague stuff, and apocalypse thing is going on. But when she sees aya bring together everyone, she sees some hope. It ends with aya comforting her, and teaching her to move on. That those who wronged her don't deserve forgiveness, and they dont need to be forgiven, but she needs to lose the resentment hiding g itself as hope in her heart. If that makes sense. when she did nothing wrong, so she can finaly move on. Like I said, literly just coming up with this as I'm typing. It can tie into ayas ark I think. Idk. I never read the manga I'm bored It just shows that people can be good, as aya was, despite there past. Everyone's actions are there own, dramatic past or not. We are not defined by our pain.

This was a really interesting take on this anime, I'll admit I lost steam about two or three episodes in, but I think that's because I made the apparent mistake of taking up the manga first. I stopped around when the brother got kidnapped by that one dude I don't really remember and needing to just... spare my remaining brain cells, so I wasn't really enthused for the anime. After this though, I might give it a shot again after all. I wasn't overly bothered by the extremely edgy first episode, it was kind of humorous, so maybe I'll like the rest of the show, who knows? Also that family thing was so insanely infuriating I agree 😫

ngl...i still haven't emotionally recovered from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Then I stumbled across an Anime called Magical Girl Site. The writeup was very short and said it was something about an "unfortunate" girl who gets bullied at home and school. Now, some people said the bullying in Nagatoro was too far, but i watched it and thought it wasn't that bad. All this to say, I'm not squeamish about this kind of stuff. HOWEVER...the "bullying" in Magical Girl Site is some of the most horrific abuse I've ever seen a character go through. It's not bullying. It's so much worse. The MC is this middle school girl (seems younger than high school, but I'm not sure) and her life is an absolute living hell. She is completely broken down and suicidal...I have to stop writing about this...I could cry just thinking about it. TL,DR Magical Girl Site...i thought I was getting a cutesy bullying anime like Nagatoro, but it ended up being the most horrific, f*cked up abuse, mentally, emotionally, and physically of an MC I've ever seen. Just had to get this off my chest...seems like no one is talking about it.

Honestly, I feel like there's just a subset of anime that's like "Let's go as super hard and dark as we possibly can in the 1st episode and then tone things WAAAAAAY down immediately afterwards". Goblin Slayer is another example. The first episode is infamous for what happens in it, while the rest of the show is a lot more tame. Still dark in places with the threat of bad stuff because of the first episode, but overall, it's just a slightly darker (but more ecchi) fantasy story like any D&D campaign you might see.

After watching your video, I kinda am curious about watching the anime. While it is most certainly intended as trauma/torture porn (especially in the manga's case), I think there is still some value in these sorts of stories, especially as someone with off and on depression, that don't take the hyper-optimistic tone a lot of other media do and instead are just kind of a intense expression of anger and grief. Not to say that it doesn't sound gratuitous in this instance, even in the anime's case of course. It just comes across as that sort of edgy brutality that would break through the numbness you'd feel during a depressive episode.

Also I really love the anime and its moments, I think it’s great, the development and psychological parts were good, honestly I really don’t get why many many people call it a torture porn, I mean, it’s not like it’s 12 episodes of someone getting beaten up without any plot whatsoever, but apparently people can’t end the first episode… and also there was one video that talked about the “hope” factor, but in my opinion, it’s not like you can’t hope for brief moments of pure joy even if your life span is limited, and it’s not like the anime could develop it’s own plot that results in an happy ending (not like the manga, obviously, because that was kind of a mess)

@@TheAngelmisa the problem is that the end is rushed, the pacing is never the right one, and the focus is often shifted towards less important stuff… basically the basis for a good series is there, but there are many problems… I hope the anime will continue because it’s really good imo

Jacopo Malatesta I think sarina and aya are badly written characters in my opinion. Sarina has no excuse for her dumb actions.

Idk 🤷🏿‍♂️ this manga was Fire 🔥 I’m breezing through it ! It does have wild stuff like bullying escorts ,Suicide numerous stuff but I feel at least the manga is amazing and later in the story their r twists and turns I didn’t even know . So I can’t say it’s bad and the anime it’s alright I watched it years ago

This show is very important to me, I needed an Anime that dealt with the ugly reality of bullying without watering it down, and I'm sick of getting trashed on by everyone who's decided Madoka is the only Magical Girl show allowed to be dark. This show saved my life, not Madoka.
