Carl Sagan Institute

Carl Sagan Institute

The Carl Sagan Institute (CSI) was founded to find life in the universe. Based on the pioneering work of Carl Sagan at Cornell, our interdisciplinary team at Cornell University is developing the forensic toolkit to find life in the universe, inside the Solar System and outside of it, on planets and moons orbiting other stars.

since your students will forgive you for the issues, but non the less very annoying, make your guests comfortable at least a comfortable chair would be a good start, just a simple phone recording would have been better, so thats lesson two, have some redundency built in, like on rockets, just in case something goes wrong, but forgiven for the mistiakes of course. So the western explorers did a bad job, how about the new explorers? SpaceX, China etc, think they will treat other planets with respect? me thinks not, seems we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past........two human failures of character are: desire for control and lack of empathy ...............sort out those two and we have some chance for a good future.

Yes science did deliver humanity from the dark place that it sat in. However in the last 100 years science has just gone around in circles and answers nothing. Only now there is much talk and the ones who listen have placed their faith in other humans who tell such wonderful tales of nothingness. How sad that humanity just repeats its mistakes over and over and loses its true faith again and again.

Fast forward 30 years and the world is filling up with Flat Earth dingbats who believe Carl Sagan was personally involved in a giant conspiracy to hide the " truth " concerning the shape of the earth and much much more . We're fucked as a species. The Rise of the New Dumb is gaining momentum under the likes of MAGA Americans and fundamentalist religious nutbags across the globe . Good luck everyone , we're going to need it.

Carl Sagan was a salesman for himself first and for dreams. A charlatan who thinks that studying million and billion year old light, from things that certainly do not exist as he perceives them anymore, has relevance to now. It does not.He is an entertainer of dreams that have no intrinsic use to us. What counts and is important, then and now, is our Earth, its natural habitats, here and now in our present moments. Cosmology is scientific and philosophical poppycock about the distant past whether true or almost true in facts. The seriousness of our harm to natural habitats cannot be ignored even for the frivolous dreams of a popular cosmologist however esteemed you may think he was. Funding must not go to these fantasies he dreamt up but rather to here and now and our life supporting synergistic ecosystem. All this cosmological nonsense hoovers extreme amounts of funding for galaxies and stars from the past that do not exist as they are observed now. They are illusions from the past made popular by Sagan who had a vested interest in promoting these esoteric studies. Had Carl Sagan studied and promoted heightened awareness of natural habitats and the interdependent synergies to all life and security they represent it is likely his popularity would have done something important and useful. But his interests only caused people to take their eyes off the ball. The ball being Earth and its life processes. The result is the harmful fact that resources are diverted toward space dreams instead of being directed to reducing habitat harm by humans. Sagan found there was a market for daydreaming and looking at stars while avoiding necessary chores and awarenesses. Existential philosophies and extrapolations harmed the awareness of repairs needed to the damaged respect for habitats. Carl Sagan was a daydream promoter. He created harm.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. FACT: Sun-Sunlight causes GRAVITY, and All Matter is Positive and negative charges. The Atom is still a THEORY today, 2024. Theory defined =NOT proven, doesn't exist. Wikipedia Atomic Theory: states current theoretical model of the atom. FACT: Big to small is the secret to the Universe REVEALED. Sun-Sunlight causes gravity and has small magnets, Universe flows from Positive to negative from the sun to the planet. (Dust, Dirt, Stone is a Negative charge). While opposites attract (People, Plants and Animals) have Big magnets flowing from left to right from negative to positive possessing a positive Aura and are connected to the planet. All Terrans understand this and are taught in school. I am J.Terran, the only Terran to be born on Eden/Earth 54 years old. Thank you for sharing your video.

It irritates me that these kids twice refer to "Tyson's version of COSMOS". Tyson read a script from a teleprompter, that's it. The script, the content, etc., was mostly Ann Druyan. And I think Steven Soter was also involved again to a degree.

So amazed by his ability to recall authors books etc.. amazing! So funny how the folks asking about God, conscience, ethnocentrism etc total missed the point. Case in point it we send a radio signal out into space right now. It would take 100000 years to traveling at the speed of light to only leave our milky way galaxy and for it to travel to another galaxy would take even longer... there are billions and billions of galaxies. IN SUMMARY... there's no chance of communication with other galaxies in any foreseeable future. We have everything we need here take care of it...its all we will ever have.

Along with the audio problems, our HD video also came out badly 😅This event was put together and recorded by students (which I am one of) on rented equipment, so we didn't have a whole lot of options. On top of that, the spotlights in Cornell Cinema were broken that night, so the better quality video was overexposed and we had to use this back-up (lower quality) video instead! Trust me, I went through a lot of turmoil over the quality of this video. I wish we could've had a professional recording, but we didn't have access to that. I hope you can still enjoy it!

7:45 is when Cornell Cinema increased the volume. This made it easier to hear Ms. Druyan in the theater but started to add serious distortion to the recording (Cornell Cinema doesn't normally record audio, so they weren't aware this would be an issue, and of course you don't realize until after something like this happens)! I used the Cornell Cinema audio as much as I could before switching to our camera's echo-y audio for some of the later parts.

@@CarlSaganInstitute Glad you guys had backup equipment. Redundancy is so important in space affairs. It's mindboggling that the Cornell archivist, the Cornell media dept., and the science departments weren't all jockeying to get the best angles to record this. A living legend appears and it's beyond their interest to cover it?

Thanks for watching everyone! Please TURN ON SUBTITLES in order to hear it better. Before you ask "Why is the audio so hard to understand?" or "Why is the video quality low?": Our better quality camera was overexposed and everything was washed out, so we had to use this lower quality back-up recording :( As for the audio, there are two tracks here-one recorded directly from the microphone in Cornell Cinema and one from the video camera. Unfortunately, the audio had to be boosted in order for Ms. Druyan to be heard in the theater, but this maxed out the audio recording and made it extremely distorted, so I had to use the echo-y video camera audio for these parts instead. I was extremely bummed out about the audio since we worked so hard on this event. To compensate, I wrote subtitles for everything! I hope everyone can turn those on and still enjoy the video.
