    Ooo I have lost count how many times I have used my metal detector more or less like a crutch. On those days I also need a driver, I dunno what rules UK got but in Norway its illegal to even ride a bicycle under the influence, not that police would check offcourse unless you run someone down. (but I stay on the safe side) However the nature and finds always clear my mind in the end. That pendant was a beauty! And great to see your daughter supporting you ❤

    "One day you turn up and win the jackpot, one day you dont but you keep buying the ticket". Well said my friend, there is so much more to this hobby, the scenery, the people, the animals. Beeing out on the field is the only place I feel I can turn off the noise from the world and from my own thoughts. Each find is a bonus and some days are pure magic.

    Really good video this. Been fighting the urge to get a detector for about 2 years now and finally the missus just got me a simplex ultra for my birthday! One of the rare times ive actually read instruction manual. Finally understand what the number value is. Is ground balance as important manual makes out? Didnt see you mentio it. Pretty much all my permissions (got loads being a gardener haha) are chalky soil some are even just solid chalk under 2" of top soil does this make it really hard for detector to sence things?

    kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYSB1JONYKWWXbg.html - PROFESSIONAL METHODS FOR METAL DETECTION HOBBYISTS - I found this video very useful. Inspite of being quite slow tempo, and 2 hours long, I find it easily worth the time. Documenting findings is in my opinion of utter most importance when it comes to studying and preserving, and especially not destroying our shared human past. I find it extremely important to document the exact location, depth, and angle of the findings. Also, taking photographs both at the excavation site and when making a findings list is damn important. The documentation sheets herein are also good and helpful. A worthy view to everyone interested in studying the past, and easily adaptable to other fields, such as paleontology as well.

    I know it's very difficult to film with gloves, but on arable and pasture with livestock you should use hand protection.

  • @martinsanders5418
    @martinsanders54186 күн бұрын

    Can you explain why please Robert? I'm new to it all, but maybe missing something, as I don't see the logic here, apart from mucky/scratched hands. Unless you're thinking tetanus, but then why just arable and pasture with livestock. I ask because I hate wearing gloves for prolonged periods unless it's bitterly cold.

  • @robertwittwer643
    @robertwittwer6435 күн бұрын

    @@martinsanders5418 Glass, flint/stone fragments, rusty metal - you don't want the risk of small cuts when exposed to arable soil with manure and fertiliser (or tetanus). Add livestock urine if you're digging on pasture and dogs if in the Park.

  • @martinsanders5418
    @martinsanders54185 күн бұрын

    @@robertwittwer643 Ah ok 👍 ... Best to always be aware there may be sharp objects and go at it accordingly, but I'm covered for tetanus, and alright with getting me hands dirty 😉 Each to our own I guess. I think you're giving the wrong impression re the livestock though, as once their urine/feces has been absorbed by the land, especially several inches down, it won't give you any disease or health risks. I think you'd be much more likely to get Lymes disease from a tick bite, or run over by a silent electric car crossing the road 😉 People have farmed bare handed for millennia, and although they are a dwindling breed, that's down to poor Gov't policy, and the power of greedy supermarket chains to keep lowering the price of produce with cheap imports. As me ole grandma use to say, when referring to dirty hands and the eating of food ... "Ye''ll eat a ton-u-muck 'fore ye die son" 😁

    Morning Gareth, another of your great videos. Well shot and to the point. Having been a welder in my lifetime and having a metal shop I have more digging knives and shovels than anyone could use. I still make some knives so I need sheaths for them. So I have a commercial leather sewing machine I can make heavy duty detecting finds pouches myself. Making things myself is part of the fun for me. Enjoyed your video others will get allot out of it. Take care… John

    So. It's very hard to find hammered coins in fields like this, because of the amount of rain. A HUGE thing to remember is the grass in fields like this breaking down each year easily adds inches of soil per decade. Brutal truth about this combo.
