I want a laserdisc player so bad so expensive these days
I notice a lot of combing artifacts
Thank you ,it was fun watching you go through the laserdiscs.
Cheers!
I also hate that blue filter concept adopted in Poltergeist since 2008, here I make a comparison between the 2008 version and the 1997 DVD kzread.info/dash/bejne/eH2ezNiylZaboqQ.html
The pan and scan Raw Deal might be open matte because it is 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
Interesting video! I picked up this movie randomly having never seen it before with the 4K edition, it was beautiful. I'm not sure if any other format is going to be as good lol Which format is your favorite?
I will always prefer Laserdisc to any other format. Not because of the resolution of course, but the nostalgia. The audio tracks and color grading is almost always correct on Laserdisc as well, where the new 4K formats have new audio mixes and often very different color grading. I prefer to watch the movies as they were presented in the cinemas.
@@5minutesofretro I get it, that last part though is something that I think is more of a moving target than people realize. Many just assume that the older dvd/beta/laserdisc is how the film was presented in the cinemas and that isn't always true. The Matrix for example was way too green until it was corrected in the 4K version. That increasingly complicated as movies were usually shot on negative film and with older films, release prints fade and deteriorate. I've never seen the same movie on multiple format that looked completely the same (color wise).
True. It's not always correct on Laserdisc in terms of video, but more often than not it is. The audio is nearly always very altered in the 4K releases. Another thing is all the digital edits many movies suffers from these days. Everything from taking out segments or altering audio to be more politically correct etc. Good luck finding "Song of the South" on Blu-Ray. ;-)
Hi! How can i get interlaced nvidia gforce rtx 3060 with w11? Cant find it anywhere.
I have no idea. I only know the gear I use.
@@5minutesofretro i can use my girlfriends laptop. No worries. Can it be different TV if it still has scart in the back? :) Like flat screen tv.
Sure.
Is that the Howling? Just watched it last week :)
It is. I have a video about that right here on the channel too. :)
VAT was designed to keep you poor. Income tax also.
Hard to tell from your video but it appeared you were using non-integer scaling whilst also using scanlines, this will of course cause uneven lines/ non-uniform clustering. If thats the case (again, I couldnt tell), Id suggest trying integer scaling as that will look much better.
I am surprised that in Norway it was the same as behind iron curtain in CzechoSlovakia. Friend of mine had a emigrated uncle in Canada, they had from him this game. Absolut heroes in those times😀. Sometimes they borrowed it. I just cant imagine how they replaced batteries. These button types you cannot buy. And if you find someone who was able to buy them on the West, it costs about 2-3 days sallary in communist country. I see in other videos that you have old digital watch on the hand. What is it? In my 50 I am filling dreams from childhood affected by stupid regime. So Ihave several old seiko digital watch, some normal Seikos watch, etc.
It's a Casio A168. It's not old, it's quite new. It's built on the old design though. I do have old watches as well as I collected them in the past. Not any more.
As always with a Composite and S-Video Signal, motion sometimes leaves those small commonly red artifacts. But otherwise there are very few signs that this is even run through either of those signals, Its really cool to see, I love Laserdisc, and would love to see you run this with the Phantom Menace, just to see how well it would upscale.
Maybe I will give it a spin.
@5minutesofretro Oh wow, Thanks I realize this is an Older Video but thank you for taking the time to not only read and reply to my comment.
All Physical Formats (Except for D-VHS and HD-DVD) David Furtney (Poltergeist Fan Site manager) would have been proud, well done 🙂
Always on the lookout for more formats, but not obsessively or at all cost. Cheers :)
No it isn’t.. it never was.
Wrong.
I've heard the term Laserdisc before but never really looked into it, I never knew how big they were and how great the covers look
Average $3.75. A little high from where Im from. But its still fair.
I am thinking about applying filters and scanlines to Plex now
I have over 200 good tiles to sale
I have roughly about 150 laserdiscs maybe 250. My player keeps ejecting the discs as soon as I close the tray so I haven't been able to enjoy them for quite some time.
Looking at getting back into Ld
Do it.
The pioneer cld 2950 is my favourite player I just love it I have been looking for a Sony trinitron 25 or 29ninch crt tv for ages you have a gangsta set up my man amazing
Bought it new in 1991 and it's still working great. ;-)
Nize!
oof, you really gotta use the auto gain on some of these
Do you think that this might have been re-wrapped, with the price sticker being on the inside of the plastic wrap?
I've investigated a little bit, and with the help of some people on another forum, this might have happened in Netherlands yes. So probably re-wrapped at some point.
@@5minutesofretro Oh well. 🙂 Still a cool video. Thanks very much.
Cheers!
On the subject of LaserDisc (and your outro music), I've got two copies of Cannibal Holocaust on LD, both of which are the Netherlands pressing, but there's also a killer Japanese release I'd like to get one day. Those are maybe the coolest discs in my 200+ title collection. I personally love collecting LD for the historical value, you just didn't get that picture quality, the bonus features, and the amazing packaging with VHS.
Nice. I've been a big fan of Riz Ortolani's music ever since I heard it for the first time. Not a particular fan of CH, but it's a classic for sure. Younger people today are too fixated on LD's lower picture quality. They can't fathom the impact it had on us back in the day, as you say, as it smashed into the home video market with all it's extensive attributes over VHS. To me that's the true nostalgic value today.
I’m so jealous of that “The Goonies” LD you got!
Got lucky on that one. ;-)
Japanese LD movies have original soundtrack? Can you turn of subtitles? Can you basicaly watch like regular western release?
Most Japanese releases have hard coded Japanese subtitles.
Which edition of Legend is that? The theatrical cut released in north america is vastly different from the cut released elsewhere, even the score was changed. Neither is as full and complete as what is now labeled as the Director's Cut on dvd and bluray. In the US, Legend was never released in widescreen until dvd but some PAL international cut LDs were letterboxed.
This is release 40193. It's not letterboxed, but it has the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. As a collector I have this. It served a purpose for this video.
@5minutesofretro Tangerine Dream score means it's the North American version distributed by Universal. The first time that version got a widescreen release was the 2002 dvd, which also was the first time the recently rediscovered director's cut was made available.
I like both scores, but I prefer Goldsmith's score.
@@5minutesofretro I prefer the director's cut which has the Goldsmith score. However I have not seen the theatrical version (outside of north america) that had the Goldsmith score retained.
I was really interested on how this excellent gaming scaler works for movies and my assumptions were true that it works great for that as well. So for retro gaming and home cinema lovers it's probably a great allrounder. CRTs becoming rarer and breaking down make this an excellent preservation device that comes close to a CRT and I'm excited for what the future holds. (For clarification: This doesn't completely replace CRTs)
I'm still keeping, and using my 1990 Sony Trinitron. ;-)
@@5minutesofretro It's a nice product (and not a replacement) but I'm also keeping my mid 2000's jvc which has pal 50/60 and it even supports ntsc (I'm also from europe) I'm just impressed with how well the tink4k performs with movies (I can't afford one)
Espen Kraft???
That's me.
They look pretty good on an OLED. All about the blacks and contrast which OLED has in spades.
I’m more curious about a Muse disc played on a good OLED. And I just can’t go back to butchered full screen beta or VHS no matter how nostalgic.
I have a large collection as well and old games as well. Still like them on newer screens as I never understood the desire to see scan lines even in my retro games.
Was the movie Island of Terror (Staring Peter Cushing) ever put on Laserdisc? If so did it show the FIRST autopsy of Ian Bellos performed by Dr. Landers and Constable Harris unedited? It was the scariest part of the entire movie and it is not shown on the VHS, DVD or Blu-ray versions!!!!! We can clearly see that it was edited out. You can hear very scary music playing for no apparent reason at the end of the autopsy!!! In the scene in the theater version you get to see up close the aftermath of a Silicate attack!!!!!
When will I get my retrotink 4k every time I try to get one it’s sold out 😩😭😭
To each it's own I guess. I get it if you would apply this to older games but video's? That's insanity to me. As a lover of cinema I want the best quality possible or at least the most affordable best quality. To add scanlines for a nostalgic feeling is something I don't understand. I mean, I understand being nostalgic about older media and how you play them but not if can get better versions at home through Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray discs.
Laserdisc almost always have the original color grading and original stereo theatrical mix. As well as (again, almost always) the original cuts with no digital alterations censorship or other manipulations. The love of this is the true sign of a movie lover, not necessarily the love of resolution. That can always be improved on.
I should get one of these in preparation for when future AV receivers don’t have any analog upscaling capabilities. One thing this still needs is a closed caption decoder.
If I wanted to watch it on a modern TV but still VHS would I need that converter your using?
In this video I'm using a cheap simple HDMI-SCART adapter. SInce I'm in Europe SCART is on every piece of old audio/video gear.
I was wondering if the LD could be upscaled to 1080p. looks like u jus went from 480i to 560i which is a very small improvement.. But what about watching them on a flat screen TV of today. Most Ppl or any hav a old tube TV.. Great vid...
No, this upscaled to 1080P in the video. The whole idea of this is to scale it up to 1080 or 2160.
Great video. I was a RT4K beta tester and have a lot of advice from Mike Chi about LaserDisc specific settings. For all players you want IRE 7.5, that's why it's washed out. Also, composite is cleanest, especially with the new 3D comb filter that's been added.
Thanks! It's an ongoing trial and error getting the best image. On my Laserdisc players the composite is definitely not the cleanest. S-VHS works much better for me. I haven't tried the latest firmware though. Also, Japanese and US Laserdisc require different IRE settings. At least most often.
Do you still want IRE 7.5 if you're using a LD player only sold in Japan, or a Japanese LD release? Whisper of the Heart (Studio Ghibli) has darker black levels compared to most other US releases I have, I suspect that's due to it being intended for Japanese home ntsc tvs.
I have a Sony VHS device. Model: SLV-950 I have a Sony STR-DN1080 amplifier. My question is; Some VHS movies have the Dolby Surround logo on the box, but I cannot get Dolby Surround sound.Only PCM 2.0... What should be the correct connection?
You have to decode the surround track embedded within the stereo track on the tape. That is done using a Pro Logic receiver. Don't know the gear your using though.
@@5minutesofretro Thanks for the reply sir. Sony STR-DN1080 amplifier is a Dolby Atmos supported device. My VHS video is Sony SLV-950 model. (From devices containing DVD players) I don't understand whether I can't get Dolby sound because I connected it with the standard cable we know. There is no other connection type anyway. When people are curious about such things, they become obsessed with them :))
Newer receivers don't have ProLogic decoding capabilities. That's your issue. You have to get an older model. My Marantz Cinema receiver can't do it either. That's why I have an older model Pro Logic decoder between my Laserdisc and VHS/Beta-players for times when I want to listen to the original stereo surround off older formats.
@@5minutesofretro thank you Sir. Greetings from Istanbul 🙌🙌
Wanted to do this but i couldn't decide wether to keep it 16:9 and put up with letterboxing or crop it to 4:3 and put up with the screen being cut lol. Neither sounds great
What edition/year to get, if I want the best Laserdisc coverage?
My last edition is from 2006 and it lists all Laserdisc releases. I don't know what later editions have to offer.
Awesome. I’m currently collecting T2 in every format I can get my hands on
Cool!
There is a scanline filter that mimic the red, green and blue sub pixels of a crt
I think my VHS has only two outputs and one SCART. I think its the white and yellow one. Is it supposed to be mono audio? Most of this RCA have left-right audio and video.
Many consumer VHS machines in the 80s were mono only. It would say HiFi Stereo on the deck if it is a stereo machine and then you'd have both white and red RCA connectors (audio) as well as a yellow one (video) in the back or at the front, or both.
Wow. Those discs look beautiful.
Who else’s is here from regular show
The Interlacing artifacts are horrible.. Is this normal with Laserdisc?
Image Quality not bad? You are not serious right? Compare it to the DVD version and we talk again.. 😀
Analog video from Laserdiscs is way better to watch than digitally compressed DVD video with pixel blocking about 6 feet high.
