I remember seeing this on HBO when I was probably 8 years old, that really impressionable age. I was terrified of seeing static on my TV screen. One of the quintessential 80's horror movies.

I just watched this movie for the 1st time since I was a teen in the 80s. My mom worked at a local cable network company in town and one of the perks of working there was getting all cable channels for free. It really creeped me out as a teen (maybe 13 years old at the time). I was delighted last week to watch this (in my 50s now) and my wife and I loved it! Basically a dark comedy. Loved the characters and the concept. Classic movie for sure.

All Physical Formats (Except for D-VHS and HD-DVD) David Furtney (Poltergeist Fan Site manager) would have been proud, well done 🙂

Love Poltergeist! 1982 itself was a incredible year for movies, got to see the exterior of the Freeling's house in person, in Simi Valley in 2019, it hasn't changed much!!

Fangoria was available at our local grocery store (Giantway) in Mt.Pleasant, Michigan. My cousin and I loved to look through through them, but we were never allowed to buy them….

Probably the scariest PG movie ever, especially considering the "Curse of Poltergeist" - 4 people involved with filming died during or shortly after. Supposedly they used real bones and that might be the cause if you believe in it like I do, have a happy Halloween!

  • @5minutesofretro

They did use real bones, but that has nothing to do with the unfortunate deaths of course.

I really love this movie too. I'm a bit surprised by the under-16 ban though. It's not so scary, as usual with ghost movies. Also, it's not nearly as gruesome as other Tobe hooper movies, in fact we (me and my friends) thought Spielberg influenced the movie a bit. No Poltergeist sequels in your collection? I can guess why...

Norway had very strong censorship and age restrictions back in the 80s. Quite severe. I have a video about that coming later.

i have a question for VHS, my player has a 2 head system, will a 4 head system have better sound? sounds like explosions or screaming have the microphone peaking I sample short sounds from VHS Tapes. I especially like the sound of synth music like brass or strings on tape media.

What matters is if the VHS deck is HiFi or not. It should be the latter imo for best usage as an audio recorder. If it's a HiFi deck, it's a frequency modulated signal being recorded and it ends up sounding like radio. That's what I like about it.

I also hate that blue filter concept adopted in Poltergeist since 2008, here I make a comparison between the 2008 version and the 1997 DVD kzread.info/dash/bejne/eH2ezNiylZaboqQ.html

Interesting video! I picked up this movie randomly having never seen it before with the 4K edition, it was beautiful. I'm not sure if any other format is going to be as good lol Which format is your favorite?

I will always prefer Laserdisc to any other format. Not because of the resolution of course, but the nostalgia. The audio tracks and color grading is almost always correct on Laserdisc as well, where the new 4K formats have new audio mixes and often very different color grading. I prefer to watch the movies as they were presented in the cinemas.

@@5minutesofretro I get it, that last part though is something that I think is more of a moving target than people realize. Many just assume that the older dvd/beta/laserdisc is how the film was presented in the cinemas and that isn't always true. The Matrix for example was way too green until it was corrected in the 4K version. That increasingly complicated as movies were usually shot on negative film and with older films, release prints fade and deteriorate. I've never seen the same movie on multiple format that looked completely the same (color wise).

  • @5minutesofretro

    @5minutesofretro

True. It's not always correct on Laserdisc in terms of video, but more often than not it is. The audio is nearly always very altered in the 4K releases. Another thing is all the digital edits many movies suffers from these days. Everything from taking out segments or altering audio to be more politically correct etc. Good luck finding "Song of the South" on Blu-Ray. ;-)

Wow, so you couldn't even see it with parental guidance. That's government or the theater going too far. In that same year at 12 I wanted to see First Blood and for me to see it I had to get me dad to force the ticketeer to sell me a ticket. It being R was no big deal to me, since my parents let me watch whatever I wanted.

I have another video coming up later about the state censorship here, at the time. It was fierce. The age restrictions for attending a movie was absolute and it didn't matter what the parents agreed to let you see. ;-)
