American Organ Institute

American Organ Institute

The mission of the University of Oklahoma’s American Organ Institute is to invigorate and reinvent the time-honored and deeply-linked studies of pipe organ building, playing, and improvisation, through preparing and equipping students for successful careers as performers, teachers, organ builders, scholars, and technicians. We seek to inspire students and audiences with learning and exposure to this ancient and ever-evolving instrument by offering innovative and informed approaches to the pipe organ and its music.

Our students cultivate excellence and mastery of performance in both the traditional classical and sacred repertoire, focusing on historical performance practice as well as playing for today's audiences and congregations. The AOI also offers students the singular opportunity to undertake focused study of the American traditions of improvisation, scoring, and accompaniment of silent films and theatrical pipe organ performance.

    picturing an alternative timeline where those got huge and something like the United Organ Players Of America organizing luddist sabotages because the churches were replacing them with those machines. It's the 1920s, sounds about right

    “I cannot speak objective about the organ of Notre Dame” says Bertrand Cattiaux; no of course not, but how dare you to say, that the sound is better than that of Saint Sulpice? Than you don't have the right eares for an organbuilder. Saint-Sulpice has not undergone as many changes and additions as the organ of Notre Dame, which consists almost 100% of the work of Francois-Henri Cliquot and Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. If you want a organ in baroque-style than build it by yourselve. It is a disgrace, that you put the resonance, which in 1963 actually first were stops of 4 feet and higher, aliquots and mixtures for the pedal now can be used on all the manuals! All these alterations and addings are the faults of the ideas of only one person, Philippe Lefebvre, who wanted the organ much more baroque. You must listen to the many recordings of Notre Dame before the restoration of 1963, then you hear despite the bad statement of the organ how it really sounded as Cavaillé-Coll would have wanted.

    About Notre Dame de Paris: I've seen Cavaillé-Coll's original 4-manual, 64-stop proposal, and have carefully compared it to his final 5-manual, 86-stop version. Having been in Notre-Dame a number of times, I've noticed that there is an arch at the front of the organ gallery, that acoustically must act much like a proscenium, holding back an appreciable amount of the sound of the organ in the main case. I sense that Cavaillé-Coll was counting on the Positif de Dos to provide sound forward of the proscenium-arch, thereby providing a key power element to fill such a large building with sound. When Viollet le Duc then denied C-C use of the Positif de Dos, C-C clealrly deemed it insufficient simply to relegate the Positif to the main case, but also had to add a fifth manual, the Grand-Chœur, to make up for the lost presence of the Positif de Dos.

    Most interesting subject. There was also a system developed for piano by Ampico. Rachmaninov had made a number of recordings, based on this techique. (CD: Rachmaninov, The Ampico Recordings.) The disadvantage, which also applies to the Möller system, is the absense of a way of influencing the "expression", say volume. Correct me ,if I'm wrong. One remark about the pronunciation of the letter ö. It is commonly used in German. It must sound like the letter U in the word fundamental. Most kindly from a viewer in Belgium.

    Always impressive to see a childhood friend with this kind of talent. I grew up with and went to school with John and knew from a young age that John was a very talented person. So impressive to see him play, just so natural and flowy. Not even looking at this hands or the keys much.

    Is that just a block of wood you're reshaping with? I have an old Regal rank I'd like to restore, and some of the boots are a little squashed. Is it the same process - would I not risk damaging them to just hammer them around a mandrel?

    My late grandfather finished his career with Moller's as a Vice President. His name was Harold D. Ocker and started working as an installer upon his high school graduation in 1924. He was working part-time until his death in 1991. He was a relative of Peter Mathias Moller and fortunately passed away before the demise of the company.

    I'm from Hagerstown and I've heard your grandfather's name mentioned. There are still some former employees living in the Hagerstown area. Two of them meet for lunch frequently. My father worked there during the early 50s. My great grandfather Robert L. Witmer worked for the automotive branch of the company as a salesman during the 20s. I can understand what you mean when you mention his passing before they folded. I play, played thanks to the virus, a 1943 Moller locally.

    I think I have missed something here???--and would appreciate knowing ---if there is a problem with any of the electrics---does one have to take apart of the entire chest just to replace one diode etc????. Now how does one replace an dead cell here without taking apart the entire chest. Someone told me that the bottom board is dropped---so how is this installed so that there are no air leaks et al and have one not get knocked out in removing the bottom board??? Or is this board (not shown here) simply slided out and if so how is it that it is easy to do since wood expands and contracts. Thanks for all who explain.,

  • @Offshoreorganbuilder
    @Offshoreorganbuilder5 жыл бұрын

    The only electrics in the chest are the magnets, and they can be unscrewed, individually, from the bottom of the chest, even when it is installed. Problems with magnets are rare. There are no diodes or other electronics in the chest. They are on accessible circuit-boards elsewhere in the organ. What do you mean by a dead 'cell'? Both the bottom board and the toe boards are screwed on and therefore removable. The air-tight seal is achieved by a strip of leather or cork which runs all around the edges of every toe board or bottom board. This also takes care of normal expansion and contraction.

    Interesting presentation. Perhaps a bit more description of the older organs - stops and such would have been interesting but certainly well done. How nice to hear that the Notre Dame organ was restored to something close to the original. Very nice camera tour of the organ.. It seems that this "Soft" alloy used in the case is all the rage today. Many modern organs have case pipe collapsing. This fascination with tin is the downfall of all new pipes. Regards your last works. They may be in the classic style and once can not fault you for that. But they seem "Thin". Screetchy, that is too much volume in the high pitched registers.. I can't express the exact feeling but somehow they sound almost N. German. The classic case is magnificent. That probably cost more than the rest of the organ. Your English is not perfect but you certainly did make your ideas clear and that is what counts. Very nice presentation. It would have been interesting to hear Franck, who brought about the Symphonic school played on at least one of the A. C-C organs. It is reassuring to know that there is at least some builders in France that respect the old and restore rather than rebuild. The organs in your care will be preserved for the future to hear the sounds of some of the greatest organ builders to visit the inside of magnificent buildings.

    Amazing and beautiful. I was a classical organist for thirty years, but it was when I began studying the theatre organ that I really found the soul of the organ. I love what the institute has accomplished here and is accomplishing. And the exiting Kilgen organ at Oklahoma history center is, like this one, amazing and beautiful. And Dr. Schwandt is the most incredible person in the pipe organ world. We are lucky to have him.
