How can you tell a trout fish is wild or stocked? Which fins would be altered if stocked?

Wilds will have all their fins. Sometimes stocked trout will have one or more of their fins clipped, or rubbed off from the hatchery tank. Wild rainbows don’t get that big on the Tellico. Maybe 7-10 inches. So the wilds will usually be smaller. Sometimes it’s just really hard to tell lol

I’ve asked a few people about it. They said they stock it a few miles down stream and they swim up into the park. But who knows! I’ve only ever fished it a few times.

How can you tell if they are wild or stocked?

Wild trout in the smokies are typically smaller fish. Besides a selected amount of streams. They’re also so rare. So when you go out and catch 3-7 bigger fish you can just assume they’re stockers. In this stretch of water, the rainbow trout get around 8-10 inches. Maybe a 12 inches if you’re lucky. The stock trout will not have all their fins. They’ll be rubbed away from the hatchery tank. If a stock trout has lived a few years in the water prior to being stocked, they’re called hold overs. And they will grow their fins back. And look kinda wild.

Yea, normally a dry dropper. A dry fly that floats and a nymph under that. Or an indicator with two nymphs below it

The weir dam is a great place to fish from shore. It’s about a mile down from Norris dam. Millers island is another great place. It’s on river road. It’s a medium parking lot with a boat ramp.
