    So if a child were to offer me a bit of mud tea, is it praise to say "yummy" or is that just playing along?

  • @ForestSchoolLou
    @ForestSchoolLou20 күн бұрын

    Thanks for watching. I personally would say that their has to be some sort of positive judgement behind the statement for it to be praise 'well done, you're so clever to make the mud tea its so yummy' which I think is different to actively engaging in the role play 'what yummy tea, I wonder what the ingredients are?' I guess there could be a fine line between it.

    Hello 🍯 I liked this video very much Keep making more videos like this I love it. By the way, if you pay a little attention to video editing i.e. insert B-roll properly then it will be very easy to understand the topic.

    Thanks both. I'm wondering if what John is talking about is not fundamentally linked to what Piaget stated 150 years ago or so - childrens' brains are different to ours, not inferio , not underdeveloped; and ultimately it can be stretched to accepting that each brain is individual and it pays to try to listen and understand and treat the other as a partner, someone much needed in the 'team' (even if it's just a two souls gig), regardless of age or where they are at in their life journey....it's incredibly hard at times but I am very grateful to folks like you who keep reminding us and offer powerful tools for when things get tough in our lives. Thank you both again for your public conversation!

  • @ForestSchoolLou
    @ForestSchoolLou2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching! Yes I think you are right - children's brains are different, but not lesser than an adult. I think that this is such an important point in our modern society that seems to be very adult dominated, where often children are expected to 'do what they are told' all the time without being offered choices or any agency over their own lives.

    This is an extremely helpful video. Thank you. We've been chatting about this in our local forum. It would be a real shame if clients restricted heavily like this and then came away thinking it wasn't very effective. I came to FS after reading the research report "A marvellous opportunity for children to learn" so I was keen to follow the principles closely in order to maximise the 'FS benefits'. Many practitioners I know have had to adapt and use all their resourcefulness to make the best of what they're given. As an outdoor educator, I do the more structured, curriculum-based work and I'm also therapeutically trained. Each has it's place and value. I'm all for clearer communication between clients, participants and leaders so our offerings are safe, fit for purpose, and deliver the outcomes the participants want and need.

  • @ForestSchoolLou
    @ForestSchoolLou4 ай бұрын

    Absolutely - we can't expect the same outcome from something that gets restricted and watered down and as you say it would be a terrible shame if people then thought 'Forest School' doesn't work like its says it does, when they haven't resourced it properly to actually be 'Forest School'!

  • @BrackenOutdoors

    That is an excellent breakdown of what is a thorny problem for a lot of leaders at the moment. Outdoor time is definitely better than no time at all, but without allowing for the time, resources and ratios that Forest School needs, you won't get Forest School results. I totally agree that as leaders we need to be a lot more expressive about the benefits of FS and clear about what eroding the principles will do to the outcomes.

    I would disagree with your summary of Curriculum Linked Outdoor learning - firstly there is no UK National Curriculum, there is an English one, then the three other home nations have different curricula and approaches. Secondly you can be place and people responsive, create a lesson which *needs* to be outdoors, not just 'take the resources outdoors'.

  • @ForestSchoolLou
    @ForestSchoolLou4 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching. Yes I have heard that the Scottish and Welsh curriculums are much more holistic and play based that the English one. I guess I was aware on the international audience on this platform and not wanting to break it down too much. In terms of curriculum based Outdoor Learning - I suppose even with the more flexible curriculums you would plan and support the children the same way inside as outside though? As in - you wouldn't just be people responsive and place responsive outside - you would do that with inside lessons too? Like in good Early Years practice - observations and planning of next steps, providing enabling environments loose parts etc would be done across both the outdoor and indoor spaces using the EYFS as the framework. As opposed to using a different set of practices, different ways of working, different language styles etc in the different environments (which can be the case for some other forms of outdoor learning).

    Hi Lou, I really like watching your videos they always so helpful and interesting. Watching this one made my heart jump. I love your attitude and wished more people would think like this. Don't worry what others think, you are doing the right thing, Lilly row is such a lucky young lady. When my son broke his arm he used it after a while as base ball bat, doctors were not impressed when they took the no more white, battered cast off but his muscles and mobility had not declined at all and he had fun even with the cast. 😂

    Thanks for watching! It amazes me to watch the natural resilience of small children left to their own instincts - the play instinct seems to be the strongest at the moment with Lily-Roe, above all else... as an adult to try and stop that or restrict it due to an injury seemed to me to not trust her own judgements about her capabilities. I think children hold a lot of natural wisdom!

    I agree with Lou that it is a control thing as it was not the educational hierarchy that changed the way children were taught but government ministers who were not trained or knowledgeable enough to make those decisions. I am 57 and I was allowed up till top infants to play with sand and water etc and drawing and art and craft was important as was P.E. and many hours were given over to this as was sports in the juniors and music etc but there was no enforced national curriculum back then ! I was a fully trained primary school teacher but chose to home educate my children as did so many other teachers as we knew the system was and is failing children. I am now pleased to be training as a forest school leader and am just beginning my six week pilot so that I can help develop the vital skills needed for well educated fully functioning self aware adults I hope !
