I thought you can pick to choose where you want to be stationed but they would just send you where needed? I want to get stationed over seas but not sure bc I don’t want to be stuck in the USA

I have eczema it’s a very light case no itchiness or anything. But would the marines give a waiver for something like that? Or would that completely disqualify me?

I got married right after boot camp. Living out in town saved me from having to live in the barracks. They used to do surprise middle of the night inspections, complete with drug sniffing dogs. An interesting Commie style life for an organization that takes an oath to the Constitution.

1971 MCRD PI Plt 150. The squad bay scenes were accurate including personal physical abuse. It did not matter to us, we expected such admonishment and all Recruits who had college education were volunteered to "One Day Motivation Platoon". We did not have any "blanket parties" or I slept through it. During Third Phase the now rare verbal harassments was entertainment and we did our best to keep from laughing. Yeah, we became squared away and very salty. PT became entertainment for us and the Drill Instructors knew it. We were a good platoon. One item that I question in the movie is the Senior Drill Instructor was the chief antagonist, whereas, SSgt Connat USMC, Plt 150 Sr. Drill Instructor, played more of a "big brother" role. The Drill Instructors played the part of the disciplinarians. After graduation it was all handshakes, laughter, advice and well wishes. Welcome to the fraternity. Semper Fi

1968 I did not get to "pick", i was assigned 0311. Best thing that ever happened to me, off to Nam in 69, grew up REAL fast. Learned to think on the fly, evaluate and react to any situation. Saved my life more than once and always served me well.

I still got the tags on my all weather coat as well I never once had a use for it and since I’m out of the marines now I definitely don’t have a use for it so it’s just a closet space taker upper along with the wool jacket I wore it once maybe twice.

Why did the first part of it is woman and minorities and no white dude, I feel likes it’s more racist and that way, not because of the white people not being, it’s like what? is it implying that woman and people of color can’t do it? Like bro really no one is saying they can’t do it, hell homie you look like you can’t throw hands like no one’s business 😂

NOS energy drink, I guess I'm not original. That beverage helped me outrun, outwork, and outperform a lot of US Marines ... What she's describing is a lot like the television personality Montel Williams. If you check out his story he had served 4 years as an enlisted Marine, showed a lot of potential (a whole lot). Then got accepted to Annapolis and became a Navy officer

My father (LT, USN) noted that he'd seen one "Blanket Party" in his time during training, where a marine pilot trainee, fresh out of boot camp, caused some problems for the rest of the training unit he was in. I asked him why they used soap wrapped up in a towel or socks, and he claimed that it was because the soap would hurt... but it wouldn't bruise, and while the soldier would be out at medical for a day or so, maybe less, it would leave a lasting impression on the soldier in question. While they weren't supported by the RDC's and training officers, by the same token, the various training officers tended to "look the other way" if the unit took it upon themselves to police the behavior of one of their members. With pilot and air crew training (which he was in), the marines trained with the navy for that. Not sure if they still do it, but, he did note that the marine that had 'attended' the blanket party (Ie got his ass beat), requested transfer from flight training into something else.

He is absolutely right. Grew up having 0 intentions of joining the military. I went through school thinking I'd live a simple life and just work in business. Now I'm 25 and have been working a typical 9-5 for 3 years since graduating college and know that I CANNOT do this for my whole life. The last year or so there's been a part of me that is saying join the military. I looked at every branch, but the Marine Corps just stands out to me. I'm strongly considering trying my hand at Marine OCS in 2025. I never would have thought I'd be considering this route but life changes you.

Do both. The perspective you gain from having served active as enlisted helps with empathy (yeah what’s that) or at the very least allows you to understand the mindset of your enlisted Marines. I’m glad I did both.

The best duty assignment during my time was at base special services motor transport, headquarters company, regimental headquarters, 1st Marine Division. It was at 13 area. Our barracks and motor transportation vehicles were next to the Base Special Services headquarters. We were not issued any weapons and there were no formations. There were 5 or 6 of us there. One sergeant was the dispatcher and another sergeant was one of the drivers. We transported military personnel to various destinations on base. We would also take Marines and Marine dependents to places like Disneyland and knotts berry farm and even to dodger stadium to watch baseball games. My tour was almost over and I was encouraged to reenlist but like a dummy I decided to get out.

I am a combat wounded Marine veteran. I may be dumb but my check from the VA every month along with my social security pay is better than my brothers retirement. He retired at Lockheed as an accountant. I have no regrets going into the Marine Corps.

I spent a week at Kadena Air base on Okinawa in 1963. I had transferred out of my unit, M3/9 to a naval ammunition depot in Hawaii. But I had to stay at Kadena for a week. During that time I was on my own and not attached to nobody. In all my years in the Marine Corps the best chow in any mess hall I ever ate in was at Kadena air base. It was almost as good as the C rations I had in Vietnam.

I was stationed at Camp Hansen with M3/9 in 63. It was a good place. Everything was inexpensive. The people were nice. I liked to eat in town once in a while But it was hot and humid but not as bad as the Philippines or Vietnam.

So… you don’t know how to be a Marine before joining the Marine Corps. That’s why there is training. But the real training is in the culture. School is pretty kill, though. Shit gets real when you go to a Marine Corps schools. I love you, all!

I was in United States Marine Corps Recruit Training in MCRD, San Diego, California 50 years ago. I'm now 67 years and 8-months old, and I'll be 67 years and 9 months old next week. Yet, I am actually stronger today than when I was an active-duty United States Marine Corps 0331 M-60 Machine Gunner. Biologically aging hasn't made me weaker, but stronger.
