Remember the 2000s? A podcast about the dumbest decade in western history. So dumb that most of it passed right through us without leaving us anything to think about, until now!
We look at the most popular movies, subcultures, political movements, books, and video games of the decade and wonder what made them so popular to audiences in the 2000s, and how their legacy can still be seen today.

So when are you going to do a team america episode? I just rewatched that and i think thats a movie worth revisiting.
How can someone be Christian and trans at the same time? I'm not trying to be a reddit atheist; I'm genuinely curious about how that works.
younger millennials and based zoomer chicks will save American Society
You guys should have someone from TF on the pod. Riley for a trailer park boys episode perhaps
Follow up on 2010 True grit, another violent boomer fantasy?
Berlin, Michigan was changed to Marne since the 2nd Battle of the Marne was the first major battle the US took part in. But only the town name changed, all of the spots in town that had Berlin in their names (Berlin Motor Speedway, Berlin Baptist church, etc) stayed tge same lol
As a Zevon fanatic, I want to brand Brace's tongue with a pocket knife for saying Murray McLauchlan was the writer of Carmelita instead of Zevon writing the song and licensing it to Murray McLauchlin before Zevon recorded his eponymous record.
Also I love Brace but preferring s/t Lou to Transformer is sinister, and also all his records are amazing except Mistrial. This fucking nerd can't appreciate Blue Mask, New Sensations, Lulu, or Magic and Loss?
It's interesting how you interperet this proposed "fact" of humans working less in the stone age as some sort of tech entrepreneur jack off thing. Because when I had heard that idea it would always just make me angry at capitalism for forcing us to work more than neccessary in order to enable the lifestyles of the wealthy, and it would make me think, "yeah we should work less, and the reason we can't do it is because we have capitalism and back in the stone age they didn't". I had never considered the thought that this could somehow be used as pro capitalist rethoric? It just always seemd like such an obvious criticism of capitalism to me
This is the movie when riddley remembers every now and then to add a "war is hell" shot, among all the fun gun play . It's also the movie with more rpg action , the second is Clear and present danger
I cant believe they didn't mention the fact that the 'Somalis' in the film look (and speak) nothing like their real world counterparts, almost certainly attributed to classic Hollywood racism believing that all Africans are interchangeable.
You'll often find these kinda situations in hollywood because actors of that ethnicity don't support the premise. The example I always think of is the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode "Palestinian Chicken", where all the "Arab" characters are played by Armenians.

Rest in peace to Duke Fakir the last member of the Four Tops who passed away, today, July 22, 2024
I heard the armor and outfits for the production were all unique with different family crests and such. They went all in on the costuming in these movies
You guys didn't mention Hulk Hogan's run for president in late 98 before returning to WCW in early 99 then doing the Finger Poke of Doom eventually leading to the death of the company. If you guys do an episode about wrestling I will absolutely feature on it.
Jimmy Clanton is my father and he’s gay
This movie is among the best in disparity between politics (Which its soaked with despite or rather because of its efforts to offload them) and quality. It thinks its this somber maybe even meditative epic poem on "War" rather than a cynical glossy propaganda for American Empire If you turn off your brain this movie fucking rips, which is basically what all of Ridley Scott's best movies since Blade Runner have been
It has mad max, Legolas, Jamie lannister and obi wan, fighting together
@@damianalejandro6959 Also Bane (Or Venom, if you'd rather lol), Ari Gold from Entourage and the main detective from Hannibal. One of the deepest benches of all time Edit: My bad my brain didn't connect Mad Max and Tom Hardy for some reason

The jackass drop killed me
My version of "with great power comes great responsibility," is trying NOT to overuse the Jackass Riff + jokes about John McCain sucking as a pilot. I don't want to kill the joke, but it's one of my all-time favourite drops.
Speaking of collector car feed, you guys should do an episode on the fast and the furious franchise.
Haha it's funny you mention that because WAY back in the day (like, before we had even started the pod), we rewatched the first two films. They probably helped us come up with the idea for the pod. Our main hesitation is that there is SO much slop to watch for that episode. Also uncertain of what the angle might be other than: "there's this arbitrary cut-off window for new, independent franchises in the 2000s that F&F seems to just barely make." But maybe one day!
I got high when I watched season 4 of arrested development. That scene where young Lucile is talks to young bluth sr I thought that was George Lucas because they were talking about may 4 also in the third season I just watched when ever they did a flash back to blush sr it wa stage same actor in a wig not Seth Rogan
"free markets will ultimately be correct" -- wtf? what meaning of the word "correct" could they possibly mean here? The fact that TIME think this sentence even makes sense on its own shows exactly how much they can't tell the Koolaid from the air they breathe.
It's mostly inaccurate to say "real money" was destroyed in 2008 (and actually putting those two words together is the shortest way to say "I don't understand economics"). It's more accurate to say everyone in 2007 just thought they were wealthier than they were. (Or you could argue that they became overly pessimistic in 2008. I'm not sure there's an objective difference). Even more accurate is that wealth was again largely transferred upwards through the banks and through securities. "Wait, but didn't securities lose value?" No, they just went on sale. Only a free market fundamentalist would say that something is worth less because the price went down. In the end, more actual stuff ("real wealth" we call it) ended up in the hands of the wealthy. So when prices went back up (as they always do) they end up even better off. Economics is so much easier when you can ignore money and just look at what's happening to real things of value (like houses, millions of which went from middle-class hands to Hedge funds owned by the wealthy) The economy is like a bus, driven by the wealthy, who have the most secure seats. They like to run the bus off-road and go fast over speedbumps, so that those with tenuous grips fall off, then the wealthy can take their seat and be even more comfortable.

Glad I'm not the only asshole the likes collector car feed. 🎉 What is the best little tree air freshener? Also that song is barra barra and it is sick!
Haha yeah, we were lead astray by the racist subtitles to the film calling it "Somali rock" on the recording. When doing our Fact Checking (TM) during the editing, we discovered it was not, in fact, Somali. Could have been yet something else to add to the cavalcade of racism in this film. "Even the subtitles can't tell different languages spoken in Africa apart"
Good breakdown of this Hollywood propaganda
Thanks! We watched the movie and were like "yeah, there might be an episode here, if only a short one," then we started reading the book and doing some more research into the actual events and realized just how disingenuous and insane this film is and it ended up being one of our longer episodes haha.
A phenomenon I noticed among Millennials today and in adolescence is they often play MMORPGs. I remember when they first came out in the mid/late 2000s, with Everquest, WoW, Runescape.
Runescape Rune Scape Run, escape!
Haha oh, there's definitely some kind of MMORPG/Blizzard/WoW episode in the works, even if only on the medium-term, medium burner.
Great content

I see the thumbnail and I just know we're in for some wacky shenanigans!
Stellar episode. I took a class on genocide once. The professor told us a story about how after this UN Ambassador Richard Holbrooke said America was suffering from "Vietmalia syndrome" and everyone thought he sounded ridiculous.
US policy seemed to be enacting systemic humiliation campaigns and indiscriminate violence and then pretending to get mad when the people you humiliated hate you.
Oh yes, buzzing for this!
Hope it lived up to the hype!
I love this podcast but I don’t think I can listen to them shit on one of my favorite cool guy war movie
time to take your medicine
@shabazzed chill dude. It's obvious that's propaganda , but if you know that you can enjoy the visuals . And the final scene with the marines running with their asses kicked
@@shabazzed literally a normal, jovial comment
Haha @thrillhouse-five and @damianlejandro6959, love the peacekeeping in the comments; way better than the peacekeeping done in Somalia in 1993.
I think this movie has a lot in common with zombie flicks
Oh yeah, that's something we mention when discussing the film's lack of nuance and abundance of racism. We'll do a Zombie Flick Episode at some point, since the 2000s was probably the peak of the genre's cultural relevance between the Dawn of the Dead remake, Shaun of the Dead, and books like the Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, and the Walking Dead comic). We're both SO over the genre though, so it'll be awhile away haha.

Another movie showing how imperialism perishes in the Horn of Africa
Many such cases
Haha yupp. We almost made this a Somalia double feature with Captain Philips, because the events that inspired the film happened in the 2000s, as did the memoir that inspired the 2013 film. There was just too much to talk about in Black Hawk Down though. Have any other "empires eating shit in the horn of Africa" movies to recommend?

Zulu (1964)
This has been on my to-watch list for years but I've still never watched it! Some wild stories from the "making of" on that one. There's apparently an urban legend that due to apartheid, none of the Black people got paid. It might not be literally true, but I feel like there's probably some kernel of truth to it, given that they were making a movie about the Zulu War in Apartheid South Africa.
0:10 😂
Gotta shout out JD for pointing us in the direction of this audio drop.
PhokeYa!! LFG
I feel compelled after listening to shout out the channel Operations Room. Can't speak to their politics but they do a great job of essentially animating after action reports of historic/named battles. Very interesting lens to view the Iraq & Afghanistan wars through.
Will definitely check it out! We're starting to do some research for a deep dive Iraq War episode (we aspirationally titled our episode on the op-ed writers "pt 1" without ever doing a pt 2/3/4), so more sources are always welcome.
More like Black Hawk Tuah
Bwahahahahahahahahaha
👏
Don't understand the meme.
They already did the "Hawk Tuah" meme with the Tony Hawk ep (Tony Gawk?)
Yeah, we really lucked out with the timing of episodes with "hawk" in the title. When THPS came out was maybe the peak of that meme. Now the meme has become hating on Hawk Tuah girl and 15-minutes-of-fame meme culture. The meme is dead, long live the hating on the meme-meme.
