I played upright bass in a local 3 piece for a while. 3 old guys in our 50s and 60s. Im an old Bluegrass/roots music nerd and the other 2 guys were your Classic Rock bar band veterans. We had a rockabilly vibe with doghouse, drums, and guitar. We played 50s rockabilly classics, 60s garage band stuff like Pipeline & 96 Tears, some 60s pop like The Monkees and Johnny Rivers, some Southern Culture on the Skids, Cramps, & Stray Cats, along with some Chicago Blues, a Springsteen tune or two, and bit of old outlaw county like Cash and Waylon. We kinda had the vibe but no pompadours or hair grease. The lead singer did have a propensity for bowling shirts, lol. Also Im bald so I did rock the flat cap, usually with the standard bar band uniform of black jeans and black T. But sometimes Id mix it up with a Hawaiian shirt, or get really fancy with a pinstripe suit from the thrift store. Our fan base was an eclectic mix of millennial hipsters, bikers, and your typical aging bar hounds & lounge lizards. We were pretty successful and only quit because the lead singers wife didnt want him in bars every weekend and put the hammer down. That sucked because we were pulling in anywhere from $500-$1000 a night which is the big time in our small southern city music scene. I think our appeal was mainly because we were high energy and got people dancing moreso than the musical style or aesthetic. It was a fun little trio while it lasted. Now Im playing laid back Dead covers in a little acoustic duo of upright bass and guitar, which is closer to my actual personality anyway. But we havnt had near the success of that trio. Deadheads are scarce as hens teeth around here so we dont get many gigs other than for the occasional Sat afternoon patio gig or happy hr background music. But we're having fun doing something thats pretty musically challenging that we enjoy so who cares. Im a tail-end Boomer that grew up on the coattails of the hippies but in the rural south. I remember "Disco Sucks" so that tells you the generation I'm from. Also Elvis had some good early stuff but Elvis movies and Vegas Elvis have always been cringe. Those type Elvis enjoyers were at least 10 yrs older than me and most of em are 6' under by now. Sha Na Na and the Grease movie sucked even back when they came out and the 50s/rockabilly aesthetic only became sorta cool when the aging punks and the college art school kids kinda fell into it in the 80s and 90s with psychobilly and the swing revival. The hard core "rockabilly cats" these days are just cosplayers, and since Covid and Trump they have revealed themselves to be mostly closet Nazis/Christian Nationalists that play their Gretsch hollowbodies in church praise bands on Sunday and cosplay as 50s greasers the rest of the week.

How can nobody have mentioned Andrew Dice Clay? the whole package may not be textbook rockabilly but the initial caricature of cool cigarette and comb is probably one of the most succinct culturally memorable greaser riffs since Fonzie who im also surprised never came up.
