    I have a D850 and am looking to upgrade. Would you pick the Z8 or the Sony A7RV? I'm mainly a stills photographer for prints. Thx!

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard11 сағат бұрын

    I like both cameras and I am sure you would soon, and they are both more similar to each other, than either is similar to the D850. As an underwater camera I'd go for the A7RV - mainly because it is smaller and has slightly better specs. But there is no doubt that the Z8 is an easier and more convenient upgrade from the D850 - just allowing you to move lenses and ports straight across. So from a cost and convenience perspective the Z8 would be my choice. In short - both are a good choice.

    Hi great photos as usual. Congrats. For me, seahorse picture is a real challenge technically (at the opposite of your comments). Deal is not about seahorse in itself but about color balancing between strobes & natural light. It's all about the sand that is showing the same color on the foreground than in the background. Everytime i i shoot like this, i have a sand color completly different than the background sand due to the different color illumation (front with strobes, background with sun). How do you do this ? Is-it only a question of manual white balancing / strobe color temperature or it-it more a question of post treatment (i imagine with a graduated filter on color temperature) ? Again, thanks for these images that is really learning me a lot.

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard10 күн бұрын

    The key to creating this look is not processing or even a fancy technique. Simply it is crucial to have the camera as low as possible (right on the sand) and the strobes lifted up in 10-2 o'clock positions. The camera angle and strobe positions mean far more light is reflected from the subject than the seabed. Also this technique works best on bright subjects on dark sand, rather than on a black seahorse on white sand.

    All I have in common with Martin is that I dive, I have a camera and a North Staffordshire accent. I was fortunate enough to attend a number of his lectures and even had the chance to ask a question. He was so kind and so eloquent, able to put me at ease and answer my questions at my level. I'm so glad I had chance to meet him and I join with everyone else in saying what a lovely human being was. I'll never be as talented a photographer as Martin but I carry his enthusiasm with me to keep trying and to look at things in a new way.

    Alex - like yourself I'm also shooting the Sony camera (A7RIV) - when you're shooting the 90mm macro, do you shoot with just the lens or do you sometimes use the SMC-1? and if you do, how do you switch between the SMC-1 & Vortex lens - do you use a double flip holder or just screw them on & off?

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard2 ай бұрын

    All of the above! I shoot with the 90mm on its own a lot. I use the SMC-1 a lot too. I usually prefer screwing it off and on. Because I don't like having the weight of the SMC and flip on the front of my port. But if the water (my hands) is cold I definitely use a flipper!

    Wonderful pics Alex,like always :) and i noticed 1,4,8,10 you use relatively small aperture,slow shutter speed and high iso. is that for more isolating object from background? Thanks

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard2 ай бұрын

    I shoot most of my wide angle at around f/13. On a full frame UW camera this aperture gives both exemplary corner sharpness and also a hyperfocal look to the depth of field, meaning both foreground and any background elements are sharply in focus. I choose a mid level ISO 320-500 to keep shutter speed reasonable and to ensure I have ample flash power. This is low enough to still deliver excellent image quality. And the shutter speed is adjusted to get the blue. When using flash you will be surprised how slow you can go with shutter speed underwater.

  • @kevinhe8188
    @kevinhe81882 ай бұрын

    @@Alex_Mustard Thanks Alex.I think you increase I so to balance small aperture. I remember you mentioned in your book,shutter speed mainly affect the background. Maybe my rx100 and z240 not powerful enough so I always open aperture and put ISO at 200.otherwise I can't get enough light. And I also found full frame can stay bit far from subject than me to get right exposure,maybe it's bigger lens works.Thanks Alex,you are nice as always.I started uw photography from your book <underwater photography master class>, it's a very guide to me. And I will still read time by time :)

    Nice pictures. One thing caught my eye was Sony FE 50mm F1.8 in your fisheye images EXIF 🙂 - is it another prototype or metabones kind of adapter reading? 🙂

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard2 ай бұрын

    Sorry, I should have explained that. The Nikonos RS-13mm UW Fisheye lens, when adapted to work on a Sony camera, reports itself as the 50mm F1.8, because that is the donor lens used to make the electronics work

    This is a wonderful video. thank you. Recognizing that you do not shoot much video, but know so much more about this than I, do you have any insights into the use of the Canon 8-15 mm fisheye/Sigma converter with the Sony A1 as it pertains to lack of autofocus functionality while shooting video (only option is Manual focus with peaking)? The alternative for fisheye photography that I have come up with so far is to use the Sony 28-60mm kit lens and Nauticam WWL-1 wet lens converter. But this is a less favorable lens in my opinion - certainly prefer the Canon 8-15 mm lens overall. Thank you.

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard3 ай бұрын

    I know many vidiots don't like the fisheye because the fisheye distortion is very unattractive when panning the camera (objects change in distortion as they cross the frame). I have no problem using AF with the Canon 8-15mm when shooting stills, so I am not sure what the issue is with focus on video. Overall the Canon 8-15mm is an excellent lens, especially for stills. The WWL and 28-60mm is probably better suited to video. First, it is a native Sony lens, so it definitely won't have any weird issues with the camera in some modes. Second, it has a narrower, less distorted view, so looks much better when panning. I know many video shooters who love the WWL and it is their main lens. Third, the large zoom range achieveable with this lens is idea for shoot video sequences, at different fields of view to create a compelling sequence from an encounter.

    Thanks for the video Alex, is a relief to see that sometimes Pros also need to remove some backscatter... Now seriously I've liked to see in action ligtroom's masking capabilitys for underwater subjects, I use 2020 Capture One (suposedly better managing Fuji RAW files) and lacks IA assisted masking, need to upgrade...

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard6 ай бұрын

    The effectiveness of the masks varies depending on the subject. Single animals against the blue work amazingly. Others less well. Knowing how to combine and modify the masks makes a big difference in quickly being able to mask what you want to make adjustments.

  • @Alex_Mustard
    @Alex_Mustard7 ай бұрын

    In blackwater photos - not really. Most blackwater photos you see are cleaned up - so don't judge your own too harshly. You get less backscatter with blackwater with larger and more reflective subjects, than with smaller and translucent subjects. Also getting closer and having better visibility help. Beam restrictors stop the light spraying around and reduce it further.

    Hi Alex, wonderful images! Do you sharpen them in post-process? Some still look blurry to me when zoomed to 100% (like the argonaut image) and I would personally sharpen more. Maybe it's just my lack of experience and it is fine for printing and publishing...

    Good question. Some of the black water shots aren’t always super focused by me! But my photo agent specifically tells us not to sharpen photos. Photos should be sharpened for the final print size - so full resolution ones going to stock shouldn’t be sharpened up, because it can’t be undone if they are resized for printing
