  I use to live on Throwley Way opposite the Arcade and took great joy crossing the road and running through the arcade to get my Dad a newspaper from the newspaper stand at the other end! Thanks for the post ‘Fings aint wot they use to be’!

  Brought up in Reigate Avenue, local shops in Sutton high street, it was nice. Tube to London was easy, those were the days, 1979 still bit like this, ..active life ..in summer bus to Wimbledon to see the Tennis, and look for Wombles! Great days,

  @@maxineday3066 Hello Maxine. Sorry not to have got back to you before now - time goes so very quickly these days. I am happy to look further into this but are you able to be more specific, for example if you were dressed in any particular way or whether you were doing anything special - there were for example roller skaters, cyclists and dancers etc.

  Unfortunately trolleybuses won’t reappear. Fully electric buses now with state of the art battery technology and wireless charging at terminal points. So no more diesel fumes.

  I can remember being allowed on Xmas Eve after our yearly trip to Petticote Lane to buy our turkey to get on our bus to Banstead in the large bus depot in the enormous bus shed. Wouldn’t be allowed now but boy it beat waiting at the freezing bus stop opposite.Then once in Banstead a long walk down Woodmansterne lane to a very cold bungalow where we had to wait hours for the coal fire to heat the room.

  This is the sutton high street i loved had so much character then now its changed completly for the worst now its just a one way system and no traffic alowed through the high street shops are all gone or closing down .

  13 years later, the Renault ER 100 ("old" ones) were reformed in 2013 and the Cristalis ("new" ones) are currently being renovated with a new livery, new seats, etc

  Sutton has lost so much over the years, this was once a great place to shop. But the council has not invested in the high street, I remember when st Nicholas centre was buzzing.Along with Times square. Obviously COVID has played its part. But it was beginning to loose it’s appeal long before the pandemic. So much potential to make it a vibrant place again. The best part of Sutton now is the cinema.

  The platforms north of High Street Kensington were too short for D Stock trains and so the C Stock was used to provide District line services between Wimbledon and Edgware Road. It could also run on other parts of the District line when needed but that was on rare occasions.

  I lived in Sutton since birth, the landmarks are very familiar to me, although the days of before the one way system was a little bit before my time, right at the end of the 1980's, but it is fascinating nonetheless

  I am a current route 38 driver and drive the NBFL(BORIS BUS) at present. I started driving the Routemaster buses, next Bendy Buses,then DW buses to where I am now.Best route in London.

  Ipswich was one of the last places to have a trolleybus system and I remember older residents calling all busses trolleybusses many years after they were replaced.

  Fast and semi fast Metropolitan line services ran all day every day when these A60 Stock legends were operating compared to now. These were very comfortable to sleep on. There were times I missed stops as a result of over sleeping on these guys.
