Thanks for sharing. This is very valuable information. My gas hybrid car gets roughly 38 mpg with a practical range of about 450 miles (60% city / 40% hwy). For a full fill up it'd be about $60. Those numbers vary but I'd guess it's very roughly 1/3 the current cost of hydrogen. A quick Google search indicates gas cars will be phased out here in California 2035 (no new purchases; used purchases ok; driving ok) and all gas cars may be gone by 2050. No matter how you look at it, these numbers are well within most of our lifetimes. It's going to be interesting to see what technology comes out on top (Hydrogen EV, Hydrogen Combustion, EV with super batteries/capacitors, hybrid?).

DVD players cost upwards of 1000 bucks when they first came out. DVD-HD was even more. Not long after, you could get them for 30-40 bucks. Give hydrogen some time to fight back the big oil and EV wolves. Once the technology gets a little polished, EV will have trouble competing. Synthetic fuels are very interesting though, so the ICE will be alive for a while longer. Coughfuckevscough.

For future growth, FirstElement Fuel (aka True Zero) has said that they are holding off building new stations until the LCSF prices rise. Current date for LCSF meeting to authorize changes is this November with anticipated implementation in 2025. The problem with the reliability with stations is twofold. (1) The older stations, such as the single dispenser True Zero stations, all the Air Products stations, and the Torrance station, are older design from over 10 years ago. At that time, it was the first generation to fill the few fcevs that existed. It was the cheapest way for the developers to build at that time (2014-2019). These stations now have a difficult time to fill at the high rate with the high number of cars now on the road. (2) Second generation equipment, such as True Zero's Linde LH2, multi-dispenser stations and Nel Hydrogen equipped stations (new Iwatani stations, like Seal Beach, and the seven Shell stations that have since closed) have not operated at the capabilities that they were suppose to. Those of us who were around when the Linde equipped stations were deployed from 2019 to 2021 saw continual failures (Air Products failure to adequately supply hydrogen did not help). An upgraded version started to be used with Costa Mesa - Bristol station which was more reliable, but they also failed too often. Some may not believe it, but the True Zero stations are now very reliable, compared to what we were initially seeing. Plus, when True Zero switch hydrogen suppliers from Air Products to Air Liquide in May, 2022, shortages at the LH2 stations are now infrequent. Due to the problems that FirstElement Fuel (FEF) had with equipment, they have pivoted to not rely on single vendor solutions and have been working to develop their own solutions. They have worked with both Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Bosch Rexroth to come up with reliable cryopumps to be used at their future stations. FEF has their own factory in Santa Ana. All this development and all the technicians they have had to hire to keep the existing stations up and running, as well as the low LCSF prices, have been the cause for the $36/kg that is charged at the dispensers. With regards to Nel Hydrogen, when the seven Shell stations were open, they had a hard time keeping the equipment operational. Iwatani is having problems and even though six new stations have been completed, only one station, Corona, is currently open for only 7 hours during weekdays as they try to find fixes/upgrades. Iwatani has filed suit against Nel Hydrogen claiming that many parts used in their station equipment is sub-par and is keeping Iwatani from operating their stations. My guess (and hope) is that in 2025 LCSF prices will rise and FEF will start deploying new stations with newer more reliable equipment. Also, I am hoping, that Iwatani will have a solution for their Nel Hydrogen stations and will open the six completed stations and they will continue to deploy their new stations.
