@2:17 Film grain and the grainy texture of a low quality raytraced render are unrelated. Why would you think that they are the same thing? One is analog noise from particles of silver oxide suspended in geletin film emulsion that has been under exposed and over developed, the other is the calculation of a number of discrete rays. They have no common cause.

Interesting subject. I can’t watch videos with embedded music as it makes paying attention to the actual content exhausting. Had to close after 1minute. Hope your other audience isn’t as distracted as I am.

I feel like the DLA or one of he alternatives you made would be better used to generate water erosion on a mountain range. Say you used the first technique and then used DLA where each space has a height value associated with the first map. Starter block would either be on the peak. Each subsequent block is programmed to climb, but it chooses the lowest value of the three blocks in the direction it wants to go.

Worth clarifying, the integral is NOT the average, it is the addition of all the components over the Omega area. Basically, it adds the contributions of all the rays.

Did you consider Worley noise for this as well? I know that's a less complicated technique but it's one I've personally gotten great use out of for generating mountain ridges. I wonder how nicely that would combine with the first technique... That is to say - I usually run Worley noise as an FBM, and then mask it with a low detail Perlin noise to get interesting mountain features, then blend that with a standard Perlin FBM.

The reason the mirror BRDF is energy preserving is the same reason why "distribution" is in the acronym. In order to be energy preserving, the integral over the function must be <= 1. The mirror BRDF actually reaches infinity, but the integral is equal to 1 because it is a dirac delta distribution function, which isn't even technically a function.
