Catherine Sunnyside Journals
Greetings from my Sunnyside Studio 90 mins east of Toronto 🇨🇦 -- I'm Catherine. I take old books and transform them into cool journals. I rescue them from thrift stores, rummage sales, the recycle box or the burn pile. I rebuild and re-purpose them for another 100 years of life and love. I do my best to use all second hand materials to create every part of my unique journals.
Fair warning: I record using my phone. I hit start and I hit stop, and whatever is there, that's my episode for the day. It's not professional and it's about as good as it's going to get.

I am joyfully upfront that I do my very best to be an inclusive, supportive channel. I hope ALL folks-- LGBTQ+, BIPOC, all nationalities, religions and non-religions, and cultures feel welcome here. I believe Jewell's wise words when she said "In the end, only kindness matters." 🤓🎨📚✂❤️🐾🏳⚧🏳🌈🌈 she/her

I also like the core showing in torn paper edges. I always tell people that the different-colored line (probably inked) allows my brain to cleanse it's visual palette. Or my brain goes ahhhh, busy busy. ;P
You really do such a wonderful job. You said in one of your videos that you wonder what people think when you buy a book in this condition. If they could only see it now!
So lovely to see you Catherine and as usual love what you’re doing with Peg 🥰👏🏻 Thanks for sharing!
📚❤️📚
From one Peg to another, you’re looking beautiful!! The song peg of my heart is very dear to me… my dad sang it to me all growing up! 💕💕I’m enjoying watching you work on your book!
Good afternoon 🧋I am loving Peg. The tag 😊 all the bits and bobs come together perfectly. Don't you love it when the page behind couldn't have been more perfect? The old negative was great. Of course I threw some out a few years ago. Makes me wonder how many ways old negatives could be used. Hmmmm❤Thank you
I love Steely Dan and I remember a Peg song they did but I don't know the name of it. This journal is looking so beautiful! I love the tag and your stamping is very good on it. Peg had a hard life but she's in a lovely book now! I wish I had all day to tell you the stories of my Irish immigrant family...they're fascinating! I look forward to more of your wonderful work on Peg. Have a wonderful day and week!💚☘
I bet you have some doozey stories about your ancestors! They were/are a strong, tenacious people.
Good morning Catherine. I know exactly the “Peg” song you were thinking of, it’s by Steely Dan! I was just a young kid in the 70’s,😉but I remember that song! Have a great day!❤
That's it! Whew... thank you.
Good morning….. 👋🏼 🫖☕️ I hope you have a fantastic day! Peg is looking good❤
Thank you! You too!
Oh Peg! I need a new junk journal like I need a hole in the head but that green cover with the peachy beige (band-aid-coloured?) lace is my favourite combo of all time! I love that you really work hard to ensure your antique book journals are as durable as possible for their new owners. That’s MY bugaboo - when makers say they did repair work on the spine and they clearly didn’t because the spine comes apart at the shoulders almost immediately. And the pockets aren’t gusseted. And nothing is sewn. And the charms fall out. Not that I’m bitter 😂 (Also, now thanks to you I won’t be able to cover up any titles, even “From Log Cabin to White House” - nothing wrong with that but I’m Canadian, eh?)
I think I read that book on Abe Lincoln. And the log cabin really wasn't a cabin. Wasn't it 3 sided, with a canvas draped over the one side? Brrrrrrr in the winter!
What a lovely video. Thanks for being a loud and proud ally. Made my day. 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️ Love Miss Peg! So gorgeous. And Harold be thy name made laugh out loud. 💙
Thank you SO much Christine!
🌼💝🌼
Hi Catherine 😊 Great Haul!! Love how the Journals coming along. I like either idea on the Gardening Journal. ❤
I'm thinking another subbie has come up with a good idea I am considering: a raffle!
Taphophile is a person who likes cemetaries Catherine. Yes you should read Bleak House, wonderful, like all Dickens. Cheers from oz
Catherine, what an amazing haul! I love the Niagara postcard! I admire it because I’ve been collecting old Niagara stuff for my travel journal of our trip there this summer. Also, I’m right there with you about covering the book title in anyway! I always cringe a bit when I see that done! lol! Have a great day!❤️
Glad I'm not alone Mary! Have you gone on your trip yet? If you visit the Canadian side, go to Evergreen Thrift store. I bet you will find vintage Niagara Falls souvenir stuff there!
Great Haul! I’m always finding nice journals with good quality papers at my local Op Shop. Then I sit and dismantle them at the beach while the grandkids are swimming. I get come funny looks from people. I’m sure I’m getting a reputation as a book hater. 😂😂😂😂😂❤️🇨🇦
You're not alone Laura. Hope you are having a relaxing summer.
Good to see ya! The Mother book is so sweet! Yes, all of your explanations make sense.❤
I'm so glad! I checked with my adult daughters whether that term was still okay to use when specifically speaking about milk and they all (active in the LGBTQ community, even rallied our town to get our first rainbow crosswalk!) and they all said "Nope. Don't use it, it has now become a cruel term."
Yes google translate is so cool with the camera option you hold it up to the page and it magically translates the words for you!! 👌🏻👏🏻 So many wonderful finds Catherine!!! 🥰👍🏻 Love it all!! Maybe you could sell “raffle tickets” for that green book to raise funds and then do a draw later…🤷🏻♀️ you have other good ideas as well. Selling packets is a good one too.
I LOVE the idea of the raffle tickets! I could do the "raffle" part on the coffee app, maybe? And then put those folks name on tickets to pull.
Peg is looking beautiful! I can't believe you're lucky enough to have two Irish post cards in the group you bought...they are so pretty! Have you ever read Real Lace by Stephen Birmingham? You would like it. You got some wonderful books too. I do believe the one book is German. I took German for a couple of years. The milk caps are wonderful and you'll get a lot of use from them. When I was a kid in the 50's we had a milk man and glass bottles with those caps. I've collected vintage milk caps from several people including Nancy! I love this haul! I loved seeing everything and the wonderful new books you got, and also Peg...love her lace corners!☘
My mom used to lose it if one of us popped the cap INTO the bottle by accident! LOL!
Catherine, this haul has given me the warm and fuzzies on so many levels. First of all, I was so glad to hear that you cannot bring yourself to hide a book title. Eg of my Heart? What? No siree Bob. LOL As for your haul, well it yet warmed the cockles of my heart. “Hi back”. While I agree the large antique store we visited is pricier, we can’t forget our ledgers and the adventure we had with them. That said, the smaller antique store always has great music playing and we get a chance to sing in stereo. LOL. It is quainter and we have had our share of luck finding some goodies. I was thrilled to see your metal finds. They were gorgeous and so…right up your alley. I hope we’ve a chance to visit later in the year. ❤❤❤
I LOVE our 3 Musketeer days!
I popped in the door and asked if they had any ledgers. He only had one, but it wasn't really any good, or old. He said "Are you one of those bunch that came in last year and got those good ones?" He remembered us!!! LOL! We ARE quite memorable.
If you use your phone camera you can get Google to translate you German book. Those illustrations are amazing!
I'm going to give that a try! Thank you!
It’s fun going through the bags of goodies!❤️🇨🇦
I agree!
Super fun haul! Hooray for ribbons 🎀 Youve encouraged me not to keep everything i thrift! I realize i just keep things because maybe I'll find a use for them. Rather you really know your style and just keep what you will use. Always an inspiration my friend. Hope you have a great weekend!
Because I buy from charity shops, it makes me feel good for both things: making a purchase AND donating back to them!
I always enjoy your videos!
I'm so glad Kristi! Thank you.
Definitely a fun haul. I love that old fabric ribbon. And looking forward to seeing your big book journals come to life 👏🏻🥰
~~sigh~~ ...someday.
✨💖✨
Good afternoon 🧋Hot, hot, hot, here. Fires all around my state and the states around me. Send some of your rain, please. Love the ideas with your big books. I will be watching for those. Thrift hauls.... big or small are so very fun. Going through bags of stuff is satisfying and very entertaining. Thank you ❤
We have horrible fires going on up here. Fortunately for my province of Ontario, so far so good this summer. Sadly out west is burning out of control. Very scary. I hope you are somewhere safe.
Happy Wife =Happy Life !! ❤ I love love love the rain! Down pours are even better!! LOL I put on my summer bucket list to paint my nails fun summer colors . I have fun picking the colors by name 😊 OPI . For example - I am not the waitress Red - favorite for Christmas/ winter . I am wearing Limelight, Funshine,, Priceless, Midnight Snacc and I am so Swamped. I am really into the fairy green forest mossy kind of colors Lol Next will be the purples !! Good to see you and looking forward to your Wednesday Thursday video LOL
I need to get Dan a Tshirt that says that! Sorry that the Wed/Thurs video never happened. July has been a challenging month for me. Will explain eventually in a video... probably Monday or so.
I love the music book! I'll bet your home was very happy with all of that music going on. I loved your story about your children being able to fill in on the piano and organ at church. I took piano lessons from age eight to age 17 and loved every minute of it. I'm so grateful to my mother for buying the piano and taking me to my lessons all of those years. It does wonders for your brain! The trims are nice and I do remember that cotton ribbon. I donated all that I had. I agree about the blue and white with silver piece looks pretty in a winter or Christmas journal!❄
I always wanted to play the piano, so when I started my family I got a piano and signed my kids up. Some loved it, some not so much, but now that they are adults they are all grateful for it.
Hi Catherine! This weather is crazy isn't it? Stay cool.🥶
It was like a SAUNA here today! Hope you are keeping cool too.
Hello Catherine, that stiff fabric ribbon is floral ribbon. It was very popular in the 80's and 90's. I got a crap load of that at my house. 😂 It does do a flat ruffle.
Thanks Pam I never knew that . I have lots of it as well and I love it. ❤️🇨🇦
I'm looking forward to playing with it. Thanks for letting me know!
I am starting a greeting card journal for my aunts 100th birthday. I see you have six signatures sewn in but many more than 6 cards inside. How is each card sewn in please?
Each card is not sewn in. I put thin elastic loops through each eyelet hole. I believe 5 or 6 per hole. That way each card can be opened and looked at as you go through it just like turning the pages of a book. I'll rewatch the video and see if I can find the spot where I explain this so hopefully my description makes better sense. ~~Catherine
I love that first page! I usually don't use stickers either, but this certainly made ideas popping up in my head. Anyways, thanks for keeping me company while I fussy-cut things and sip on my coffee. .
You are so welcome Anna!
🌼💝🌼
So lovely Catherine great job making those stickers look wonderful! 👏🏻 Thankful to have some rain here and have a little bit cooler temperatures to give some relief from the heat wave….Much needed with all the horrible fires 😭💔 I am so sad about beautiful Jasper! 🙏🏼🫶🏻
The fires in Jasper are terrible and heartbreaking. What a strange time we are living in.💔😓
@@CatherineSunnysideJournals I know right? Floods in some areas, fires in others. One extreme to the next!
Very nice, Catherine! ❤❤❤
Thank you Carol!
I’m thrilled that you are working on this book. My dad used to sing the song Peg o my heart to me … I’m really named an Irish name, Pegeen, that no one seems to know how to pronounce so I go by Peg a lot! I’m going to keep watching!!
You DO have an unusual name! I love it!
This rose bordered page is so gorgeous! The stickers you used are so beautiful and very elevated by using them in this way. I love the picture of Peg holding her little pup. Enjoy the rain with Kirby! I wish we would get some here. It's extremely hot and we need the relief! I hope you have a wonderful week end!♥☘
We had the strangest July in Ontario. We broke all our records for rainfall for our province. I wish we could have shared 💔😓 so many places need it so badly.
Good morning ☕️So glad you turned on the camera. I am in love with your fussy cutting and using pieces in an out of the box sort of way. Its my favorite of your art. Appreciate your sharing. Thank you ❤
Thank you Candy :-)
Love love love the rose-bordered photo page! You really elevated the $ store stickers!
Thank you Leah🥰
Love to see your creative vision for this book. I have a Peg O' My Heart journal in my Etsy shop! Thanks for sharing.

Good morning!☕️👋🏼
Morning! 🥰
Oh I think she will be Peg of OUR hearts. ❤❤
This is going to be a fabulous and very beautiful journal said the Irish girl! Peg is after my heart! I love my Irish ancestry! I love that the book has shamrocks on it. I know you're going to bring it back to life Catherine and have a wonderful week!☘
Thank you so much! ...from a fellow Irish girl ☘️
Hi Catherine 😊 I like it when you get off topic. I love to listen to your stories. This is going to be a nice shabby chic journal. Can’t wait to watch you bring her to life❤
Thanks for listening Paula 🥰
