    @@_RandomPea yeah I'm looking forward to it. It's now looking a while off as it won't fit in the loft and will therefore have to wait until I move the layout into some sort of shed. I've just ordered the baseboards for the station module though.

  • @HorsehayRailwayModeller
    @HorsehayRailwayModeller26 күн бұрын

    @@_RandomPea it's woodland scenics fine ballast. What is traditionally sold as 00 scale ballast is usually over scale when compared to the real railway. I quote like woodland scenics fine with a mix of grey blend and sometimes buff. I might well look at chinchilla sand in the future as it does seem like a good cheap alternative.

    @@HorsehayRailwayModeller ah that's good and bad news, I've just finished painting up one station platform, so interested to see your methods. I used 3 5mm foam boards glued together and then topped with a watered down lightweight plaster. It seems to work quite well. I reckon I could have got it smoother but it's ok.

    @@_RandomPea I'd say in your case mount some led strips direct to the silver foil in the roof. Possibly using hot glue to reinforce the sticky tape every few feet. I'd use one warm white and one cool white. Maybe have a look at Ron's trains n things lighting guide. He mounts led tubes direct to the ceiling.

  • @_RandomPea
    @_RandomPea28 күн бұрын

    @@HorsehayRailwayModeller thanks David. The plan will be to eventually get that silver covered with board so that should make it easier to do. The other idea I was thinking of was having normal bulbs mounted in those angled bayonets along the roof supports, I could take power from the existing light fitting then which would be handy.

  • @HorsehayRailwayModeller
    @HorsehayRailwayModeller28 күн бұрын

    @@_RandomPea if you've got 230v handy I'd deffo recommend some led tubes. Similar to the old halogen tubes but much cheaper to run and in alot of cases smaller and brighter. I've tried with bulbs before and it's hard to get an even light without using loads of bulbs.

    Look great as paintings. The problem with most backdrops is absurd perspective that only makes sense from ground level. Otherwise, the layout is looked at from bird view while the backdrop makes no sense at all (like your smoke stacks) thus breaking the illusion.

  • @HorsehayRailwayModeller
    @HorsehayRailwayModellerАй бұрын

    I do tend to agree with you. This is somewhat alleviated by using a lighting pelmet that forces the viewer down towards track level. I. E. If you're stood at full height the lighting rig gets in the way forcing you to duck down or sit on a chair to get the best view.
