Historic Wings

Historic Wings

Historic Wings is an online aviation adventure and pilot magazine featuring stories about airplanes, helicopters, jets, and everything that flies -- bringing history to life, with stories from both the past and present.

== To understand the present and to predict the future, we must first remember the past.

Above all, what matters are the people, not just the aircraft and technologies that make flight possible. They took risks and achieved extraordinary things, taking us from the ground to the stars. The pilots, inventors, pioneers, and others who have taken to flight changed the world -- and for the better.

Thank you for your patronage! We hope you enjoy your time at Historic Wings! Please visit us online at HistoricWings.com. Historic Wings is one of the most venerable and first aviation websites online. While our KZread channel was started in 2021, we have been publishing online since October 1997.

Welcome!

    The history taught in Sweden to this day is that PM Erlander couldn't even consider nuclear bombing the ports in Soviet Baltic ports. That's why he cancelled the program. I very much doubt it. More probably it was a very expensive program to go nuclear. When the other branches of the military realized this they all voted for the US shield option...And now we have the Trump - Putin mess...

    Hey brother, i appreciate you shining a light on this issue, since many people still today claim that they violated Cuban airspace in January which "justified " the shootdown in February...however they didn't need to enter the airspace to beyond 12 miles to drop.the leaflets.There are however some inaccuracies in your chronolgy not even related to the planes but on basic historical dates that you got wrong: 1.Fidel passed away in 2016 not 2011 2.But even before 2011,actually in around 2006 Fidel retired and his brother Raul took over. To qualify as "the 4th largest nuclear power" Sweden would have had to have hundreds of nukes, those 6 nukes mentioned would literally put it at the bottom of the list and on par with South Africa, who also had about 5-10 nukes but kept them disassembled and later completely did away with them.

    Exactly correct. The last round of IAEA reports corrected the previously undisclosed fact that secretly Sweden had kept enough plutonium to build at least one or two tactical nuclear warheads. That material has now been shipped to the UK. Does Sweden have yet more hidden? It is hard to say. After Russia's Ukraine invasion, Sweden announced a surprising reversal of its nuclear power generation policy, though it was cloaked in environmentalism and climate change language. That reversal enables Sweden to create more plutonium -- however, is that happening? Again, it is hard to say I expect that Sweden's national security team realized that it was a choice of building a new nuclear weapons arsenal or joining NATO. Since the nation elected to join NATO, I would imagine that the pressure to develop nuclear weapons has been reduced considerably. Again, who knows? The country the means, budget, knowledge, sophistication, organization, and driving security requirements to do so. It would not be surprising if the program was relaunched. If it was, it will take some years to scale it up.

    Why not roll for accidents to the cap aircraft when sending up the cap?

  • @HistoricWings
    @HistoricWings5 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the question! For simplicity and streamlined gameplay, the take-off accidents for both CAP and Assigned were put into the same Phase. 1. If you wish for more realism, you could make a "house rule" to launch the CAP, roll the take-offs, and then figure out what and who you want to assign. 2. You could also add a "house rule" that allowed you to have up to two additional aircraft of each type on standby to fill in for take-off accidents. That wasn't generally done, but on important missions, they did that.

    Sweden and Finland recognize the threat from Russia and have elected to join NATO to help improve their security. For Sweden, the other option, if not NATO, was likely to restart the nation's nuclear weapons programs -- this is a guess, but one can be sure that the defense establishment would have considered this. Membership in NATO was likely viewed as the better option.

    A few months before Colonal Carr passed away, we held a dinner in his honor at Kermitt Weeks Fantasy of Flight. This was back when it was open to the public and available for events. Lee Lauderback of Stallion 51 flew him to the event in a TF-51 - a two-seat Mustang. Carr's final flight in the type he flew in WWII. He spoke at this dinner. He didn't dwell on his awkward but legendary escape. Rather, he focused on the friends he lost that day and the unsuitability of the P-51 in a ground attack role. I've had harsh words for this video. I doubt its accuracy and wonder why it was ever made. There is an enduring truth to the ending of John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance. Even if, and that's a big IF, the legend conflicts with facts, you print the legend. And let it be.

    @@HistoricWings It's more than sentiment and it's not "undoubtedly false." My point is that claiming it's false serves no useful purpose. And there remains the little matter of proof. As I've said, too, too many times, the video itself provides none. It simply asserts that it never happened.

    @@BlueBaron3339 Carr's Fw-190 story was captured on film, and it was after V.E. Day. The pilots of the 354th FG were bored and decided to hitchhike from Ansbach to an abandoned Luftwaffe airfield near Linz, Austria where there were some abandoned Fw-190s. Carr had seen another AAF officer with a "trophy" Fw-190 and wanted one. I think he had arranged to have a P-51 escort on the way back. Several Fw-190s were flown back and Carr could not get his landing gear down and made a belly landing. His landing was captured in photos and there is film of him afterward. Here is the film of Carr's Fw-190 and other 354th pilots landing Fw-190s. kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6qMlMOMo7OZiMo.html Carr is seen trying to explain his way out of trouble while being dressed down by 354th FG CO Col. Conclusive evidence that the story that this video corrects was false is found in Steve Blake's extensively researched, day-by-day account of the 354th FG's history, "The Pioneer Mustang Group / The 354th Fighter Group in World War II", which is considered the ultimate reference source about the unit. See page 345, where Blake confirms the version I relate in my video -- that the events happened after the war at Ansbach. Blake writes: "Another Lt. Salter's squadron mates, Bruce Carr, who, besides being a triple ace, was one of the group's genuine 'characters,' also had an unfortunate experience while flying an Fw 190. For many years an apocryphal tale, its source unclear but usually presented as the gospel truth, has circulated about Carr. According to the account, which has been published more than once, he was shot down over Austria in late April 1945, evaded capture for several days, and then stumbled upon a Luftwaffe airfield from which he was able to steal an Fw 190 that he flew back to Ansbach, where he crash-landed it. A great story, but most of it is untrue. / In fact Captain Carr, who had helped liberate some of the aforementioned cars and motorcycles, was one of the wannabe collectors of German fighters. He heard that there was a trove of them at Linz (indeed in Austria) and proposed that and his squadron mates collect some. Shortly after VE Day he proceeded to hitchhike there, having planned a rendezvous over the airfield with some of the other pilots. Carr chose an Fw 190 that seemed to be in good condition, made sure it had sufficient fuel, took off, joined up with his friends flying the P-51s, and flew to Ansbach. He did, in fact, crash-land it there, for the reason given in the mostly fictitious story: although he had managed to retract the landing gear, he was unable to figure out how to get it down again."

    Really fascinating. I've already done research on Sweden's past bomb program, but I've never been able to locate any additional details about the tests that were carried out around 1972. In my opinion, the experiments were probably comparable, if not the same, as the "hydronuclear" experiments that the United States and Russia still carry out at their respective nuclear sites. *Hydronuclear test definition from osti.gov* “Such experiments are described by the term "hydronuclear." They involve a combination of high explosive, usually in a nuclear weapon configuration, and fissile material (enriched uranium and/or plutonium) whose quantity is reduced far below the amount required for a nuclear explosion as the term usually is understood.”
